Androgynous Australian supermodel Andrej Pejic has been cast in the new The Little Mermaid film, directed by Sophia Coppola.
The art-house director is giving the Disney classic a live-action makeover and the Aussie model is the first name attached to the project reportedly cast as “sister #4”.
Playing a female role shouldn’t be too much of a stretch for male-born Pejic, 22, who told Lamonda Magazine she prefers to be described with female pronouns.
“A lot of my close friends say ‘she’. But a lot of people say ‘he’ too and I am not offended by that; when you are in this position, living this life inbetween genders, you can’t be too offended by anything. Either way is fine, but I prefer ‘she’,” said Pejic.
The film is set to take on a darker tone than the original fairytale and Emma Watson is tipped to play the lead as Ariel.
With her fine features and wiry frame, Pejic has been an enigmatic figure in the fashion world and that fascinating allure has led to magazine covers, runway appearances and billboards campaigns.
Before she makes her leap to the silver screen here is a look at some of Pejic’s career highlights.
