Today it’s been reported that their organisation The Clooney Foundation for Justice, is partnering with Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in the US to fight against rightwing extremism, a cause to which the couple has donated $1 million.

The donation comes in the wake of the events in Charlottesville in the US earlier this month.

George explains that he and Amal wanted to add their voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality.

“There are no two sides to hate,” said the actor.

“I think it’s wonderful that celebrities would choose to spend their time or energy or, you know, the spotlight that they have to raise awareness about these causes,” Amal said.

“If there’s more attention paid – for whatever reason – to that, then I think that’s good,” said the Oxford University alum.

“I think there is a certain responsibility that comes with that. And you know, I think I’m exercising it in an appropriate manner by continuing to do this kind of work.”

Amal has worked as a human rights lawyer for 15 years and shares her passion with husband, actor George Clooney, who was honoured by Pope Francis for his charity work.

George was working together with the religious leader with his arts foundation, Scholas Occurrentes, an International Organization of Pontifical Right that connects technology with arts and sports, according to its website.

“The one thing that we know is that hatred and bigotry has to be taught,” the Money Monster actor proclaimed in his address to the Pope.

“We aren’t born this way… and the fact that Pope Francis and all of you are involving people at such a young age in the schools, the idea that inclusion is the only way we’re gonna make it, that to me is what is so spectacular about what you all are doing.”
