Adele has been awarded a five-figured sum after suing over paparazzi images of her toddler son.
The Skyfall singer launched legal proceedings with her partner Simon Konecki against Corbis Images UK Limited after the couple felt the paparazzi had over-stepped the mark with regard to their son Angelo’s “milestone moments”.
“It is a matter of profound sadness that many of his milestone moments, such as his first family outing and his first trip to playgroup, were photographed and published worldwide expressly against his family’s wishes. Adele and Simon never encourage such photos. Quite the opposite”, solicitor Jenny Afia told Justice Bean in London on Wednesday.
After the undisclosed sum was awarded the celebrity couple said they were “pleased” with the result.
“Adele and Simon are pleased this matter has been resolved. They continue to do all they can to protect Angelo’s rights in relation to the paparazzi, including taking legal action where necessary.
“The children of famous parents are not celebrities. The law can, will and should protect them.”
Adele isn’t the only star to take on the paps. Halle Berry, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have all crusaded against intrusive photographers who have threatened the privacy of their children.
“The children of famous parents are not celebrities. The law can, will and should protect them,” said Adele’s lawyer, after she successfully sued for paparazzi taking and publishing photos of her son.
Halle Berry testified for a California Paparazzi bill that would limit the ability of paparazzi to photograph the children of celebrities and public figures. “My daughter doesn’t want to go to school because she knows ‘the men’ are watching for her,” the actor told the Assembly Committee on Public Safety.
Jennifer Garner also defended the bill, crying as she described what her family had gone through. “I chose a public life … [but] my three children are private citizens,” she said. “I love my kids. They’re beautiful and sweet and innocent, and I don’t want a gang of shouting, arguing, lawbreaking photographers who camp out everywhere we are all day every day to continue traumatising my kids.”
Gardner’s husband, Ben Affleck, says “My kids aren’t celebrities. They never made that bargain.”
Dax Shepard and his wife took to Twitter urging people to boycott publications that buy photos of celebrities’ children without the consent of their parents. That is, photos taken by paparazzi.
Kristen Bell campaigned for a ‘No Kids Policy’ for paparazzi aimed at reducing media demand for paparazzi images of celebrity kids.
Kristen Bell used the example of Suri Cruise in her advocacy, saying “Suri Cruise is not fictional. She’s a real little girl … and it’s just not fair.”
