The Today Show is undergoing a major shakeup with promotions, demotions, and trials currently underway in a frantic attempt to breathe some new life into the national breakfast show.
Of particular note, entertainment presenter Brooke Boney has been promoted to the role of newsreader, taking over from Alex Cullen who has now taken a backseat and will just focus on his main role as a sports presenter.
Going forward Alex will continue to host his usual 5am 9News shift before moving across the Today show when it goes live on air from 6am to cover sports news.
But despite the transition already having occurred, Nine is yet to make a formal announcement regarding the shift, and why exactly it is taking place.
Alex has been working with Today since January 2020, amidst a huge line up shake up that saw Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon confirmed as the full-time hosts of the program.
He started working purely as a sports presenter before replacing newsreader Tracy Vo two months later when she moved to Perth.
We can assume that his move back to pure sports presenting is a means of shifting back to the whilst short lived, original role he held on Today.
Whilst no formal announcements have been made, his biography has changed to Today Sport Presenter on the 9News website.
Sarah Abo has since replaced Allison Langdon on Today following Alison’s move across to A Current Affair following long time host Tracy Grimshaw’s retirement.
Brooke has been working in the role of Entertainment Reporter since 2019, however in the last few weeks she has been sitting in the news chair whilst juggling her standard job responsibilities of entertainment and celebrity gossip.
Again, whilst 9News has made no official comment, her biography on the 9Now website lists her job as ‘Today News and Entertainment Reporter’.
When her new position with Today was finally made public three years ago, Brooke said she was thrilled to be taking up the mantle of veteran entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins.
”I’m really thrilled to be joining the team and so excited to be working alongside Richard Wilkins. He’s such a legend in the business,” Brooke said in an official statement at the time.
”As a young girl growing up in the country I watched Today, so it’s really awesome to know it’ll be my new home.”
