A television insider suggested Lisa Wilkinson was the next host to leave The Project back in October and now it has been confirmed! The host announced her departure on air and revealed the ‘toxicity’ from the media was becoming too much.
The source revealed their suspicions just days after Carrie Bickmore announced she would be leaving her desk – which she sat at for 13 years – to “move on to something different”.
“The last six months have not been easy and the relentless, targeted toxicity by some sections of the media has taken a toll not just on me but on people I love,” Lisa said in her goodbye speech.
“Don’t get me wrong. I’m not above criticism. Far from it. I’m human, and I don’t always get it right. None of us do. But by god I’ve tried. I’ve given this job everything I have.”
There’s no doubt Carrie’s departure on November 30 will be a massive shift for the program, and entertainment journalist Peter Ford took to Twitter to claim that Lisa would be the next person to leave.
“It’s an odd show. I’m tipping Lisa won’t be there next year so it’s quite a seismic shift,” he wrote back in October.
With regards to Carrie’s popular role on the show, he commented: “They’ve lost their biggest asset. Nobody is indispensable but there are some people easier to lose than others.”
Following Tracy Grimshaw’s announcement in mid-September that she was leaving A Current Affair, there have bene prominent on-air talents gunning for the role. It was alleged that Carrie was a front-runner for the position.
However, when asked by fellow presenter Kate Langbroek, “are you hosting A Current Affair?”, Carrie only confessed she didn’t know what her next TV role would be.
“I look forward to being able to help Chris out with the kids a bit more and yeah, I’m not leaving TV,” she added.
“I want to spend more time at home. I want to have more family dinners.”
“There’s so much I’m gonna miss, I’m gonna miss my best mates on the desk, the job itself, which is so incredibly fulfilling. The wonderful viewers over the last 13 years.
“It’s no secret that this show has become a second home to me, and I couldn’t be more thankful to everyone that has been involved on and off screen.”
Carrie mentioned her son Ollie, 15, who was in the crowd after telling his mother he wanted to see her “retirement”.
“My son sent me a message saying he wanted to come and see my retirement – honey, I’m not retiring. I just gonna move on to something different which I do not know what that is yet.”
