As Daniel Craig’s run at the legendary role of James Bond draws to a close, most of the film’s fans had picked Idris Elba to take over as the next 007, but the latest betting odds have revealed that British actor, Damien Lewis, might be about to take the lead.
After five James Bond films, including his upcoming final films Spectre (2015) and Bond 25 (tipped for 2017), Daniel Craig’s time as the sexy and dangerous James Bond has finally come to an end. And after all the cake and tiny blue swimming trucks, he is set to pass the torch to another actor.
A hotly pursued social media campaign led by fans and a few backings from Hollywood, had boosted British Mandela actor, Idris Elba, to the lead for the next Bond. The handsome actor, who has previously appeared in Luther and Thor, has responded to the prompts by saying that he would audition if he was asked.
But according to betting site, William Hill, British actor, Damien Lewis, has sped up to second as fan favourite.
The Wolf Hall actor has garnered bets of up to £200 on the odds of him becoming the next Bond, with odds going from 25/1 to 3/1.
But Lewis and Elba fans should come to clashes just yet; the actors haven’t even auditioned for the role (as far as we know), and Elba is still in the lead at the betting office, with Lewis coming close second. Actors Michael Fassbender (X-Men), Richard Armitage (The Hobbit), Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Carribbean) and Henry Cavill (Superman) follow close behind.
But although Elba is still in the lead, there are a few who oppose Elba’s (would-be) casting, saying that the actor couldn’t play Bond because he is black.
“He was white and Scottish, period. That is who James Bond is. I know it’s racist to probably even point this out,” said the infamously controversial radio host, “But the franchise needs to get with it, right? The franchise needs to get hip. The franchise needs to get with the 21st Century. That’s right. We had 50 years of white Bonds because Bond is white. Bond was never black.”
We guess we’ll have to wait and see what the auditions hold.
