There’s nothing we love more than a celebrity wedding, and while it may be a while away, the Irwin family see one on the horizon. At least, Terri Irwin thinks so.
The wildlife conservationist and wife of the late, great Steve Irwin has confessed she’s be surprised if daughter Bindi Irwin doesn’t tie the knot with her boyfriend, Chandler Powell.
In an exclusive chat with US Weekly to promote the family’s new show Crikey! It’s the Irwins, Terri said, “I really think that this is a long-term situation. I mean, Chandler is perfect as well. I’ve never heard him swear. He doesn’t drink. He’s just awesome. He’s the kind of man you hope for your daughter, so I think I’m lucky.”
Bindi and Chandler, a former American pro wakeboarder, first met in 2013 when she took his family on a tour of her native Australia Zoo in Queensland.
And it seems like he’s always been in mum Terri’s good books- Chandler asked for her blessing to keep in touch with Bindi when he headed back to the US to complete his university studies.
In fact, Chandler’s grandfather John DiCenzo told Woman’s Day that he was obsessed with the Irwins and the late Steve in particular, well before he was ever introduced to the family.
“They both really bonded because they both travel so much, and they talked about how to combine the travelling with school, something they’re both very used to.
“Bindi likes writing letters just like Chandler – I guess that’s old-fashioned with email and things these days. I think they talk every day they can. They use Skype, too.”
The young lovers reconnected in 2015 and haven’t looked back since, and Chandler’s now an official part of the Australia Zoo family.
In an interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly in 2017, the wildlife conservationist opened up about her relationship and what her dad, Steve Irwin, would’ve thought.
“I’m lucky I have found the one, the person I want to spend all my time with … We all think Dad would have loved Chandler.”
While Chandler has the seal of approval from Terri, Bindi has insisted for a long time that she’s taking her time with her relationship and she won’t be rushing into marriage.
“As human beings we’re always so rushed with things, so you know, ‘When are you going to get married?’, ‘When are you going to have kids?’ Every single step. And so I think we all need to just revel in the now,” the 20 year-old said.
