Tanya Plibersek is among Australia’s most powerful women

She is widely considered to be a future leader of the Labor Party, as her role as Deputy Leader of the Opposition sees her at the pointy-end of political sparring.

She is not only a thoughtful communicator and softly spoken, but is whip smart and tackles her political opponents head on.

Tanya, a mother of three, has an insightful take on power. “Men have been brought up since they were little boys to be told that being powerful is great. And women are brought up to be taught that being powerful is a responsibility and you have to be careful with it – and I often see that in the way adults behave.”

With the Syrian refugee crisis dominating debate, she is in the spotlight as Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The Weekly’s annual Power List in partnership with CPA Australia celebrates the 50 most powerful women in Australia.

Peta Credlin, the chief of staff to former Prime Minister, Tony Abbott topped the list.

Closely followed by Julie Bishop.

Rosie Batty, Jane Halton and Catherine Livingstone also made the list.
