Family, friends and fellow Australian icons came together to honour Shane Warne’s legacy on March 30 at a state funeral that no one expected would come so soon.
Just weeks after his sudden death from a heart attack while holidaying in Thailand, the 52-year-old cricket icon was farewelled with a service at the MCG after he was laid to rest in a private family funeral on March 20.
News of his death at such a young age sent shockwaves around the nation, rattling the very foundations of the sport he loved most and leaving his family devastated, none moreso than this three children: Brooke, Jackson and Summer Warne.
“I will forever cherish our final memories together laughing and joking around with each other. We were happy,” Brooke, 24, said in an official statement following her father’s death.
“You were truly the best father and mate anyone could’ve asked for. I love you so much Dad, see you soon,” read 22-year-old Jackson’s statement, in part.
And Summer, his youngest at 20, said: “I wish I could’ve hugged you tighter in what I didn’t know were my final moments with you.”
Shane’s children were among the mourners at the MCG, as were many famous faces from every sphere of Australian society.
