The 39-year-old personal trainer and former Bachelor has been running free online workouts via his 28 by Sam Wood Facebook page. but the new restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a bit of chaos at home with wife Snezana and their three daughters Eve, who’s nearly 15, Willow, two, and nine-month-old Charlie.

In fact, they’ve even forced him to postpone his 40th birthday celebrations in May.

“We had plans on having a nice sit-down lunch with family and our closest friends but I don’t know if we’ll be allowed or if it’ll be the right thing to do in just seven weeks,” Sam explained.

“But if it’s not, you can always do these things retrospectively when the time is right. Snez is 40 in October as well so it might even be a case of rolling things together, we’re both born in 1980 so maybe we could have an eighties party or something but we’ll definitely do something when the time is right together.”

He added: “You’ve got to string these things- the big 4-0 you’ve got to milk it for all you can. Some people like to sweep it under the rug and pretend it didn’t happen but I think because we both turn 40 in the same year and with kids and everything being so crazy we don’t let our hair down too often so we should definitely celebrate.”

Like many Australians, Sam is working from home and is running family-friendly free online workouts every weekday at 9am from his very own living room.

Over the first two weeks, a million households tuned in to join Sam, along with Snez and the girls, but like many of us, it’s been an adjustment to everyday life.

“It is a bit of a circus at home at the moment but it’s all for a good cause. It literally takes until 11 o’clock to get the whole house back in order,” Sam jokes, though he’s happy to provide a service.

“I think it’s just what people need right now – something free, something that keeps them mentally and physically getting up and getting going in the morning especially when we’ve lost all of our routine so that’s been really nice. I think getting the kids involved has been really popular – I saw Hamish Blake was doing them with his kids so it’s good to see.”

Aside from working out, the Woods have been keeping themselves busy especially with cooking.

“Evie loves it, she’s been such a good big sister getting Willow involved,” Sam says, adding that cookies, cakes and muffins are often on the menu.

“I’m still going into the 28 office by myself some days and I get home in the afternoon and the house is like a Macedonian bakery at the moment- timing is everything!”

Though self-isolation has been a challenge, Sam adds that he and Snez, who tied the knot in 2018, try to find some alone time in spite of things.

“We’re just trying to do things together as a family and then if we can get the kids to bed nice and early that gives us a bit of downtime at night just to unwind and catch up properly,” he says.

“It’s obviously going to put lot of strain on relationships but it’s early days and I think we’re handling it ok at the moment. Snez is pretty unflappable so we’re ok.”

As one of the franchise’s most successful candidates, Sam knows first-hand what it’s like to be the Bachelor, but he hasn’t got much on this year’s star Locky Gilbert who found fame on Survivor.

“I didn’t watch Survivor, I must be the only one but apparently he seems like a pretty good bloke,” Sam confesses.

He also reveals Locky’s ex and former Survivor co-star Brooke Jowett previously worked with him at 28 by Sam Wood and is “an absolute champ” in his eyes.

“I’ve never met [Locky] but I know Brooke because she used to work with me so I saw she was a bit shocked by the whole thing but I’m sure everyone will move on and he’ll do a good job,” he says.

“I have no idea really but I’m sure I’ll form an opinion once it starts. I’m a bit out of the loop on that one.”
