As a veteran host of the Golden Globes, everybody knew not a single celebrity would be safe from British comedic legend Ricky Gervais’ witty jibes.
But actor Matt Damon clearly wasn’t expecting Ricky’s jarring comments about his best mate Ben Affleck.
Ricky Gervais was unapologetic about his crack at Ben Affleck.
Referring to the marriage scandal that rocked 2015, when Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner sensationally split after 10 years of marriage following allegations he’d cheated with the family nanny, Ricky introduced Matt by welcoming “the only person Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to.”
Matt, on stage to talk about his movie The Martian, was forced to pause and collect himself for several moments, while the crowd sat in awkward silence.
Neither Ben nor Jennifer are at the Globes this year.
In a testament to Matt’s professionalism, after he’d gotten over the initial shock at the jibe about his longtime friend, he smirked, gathered himself, and got on with the show.
Matt, pictured at the event with wife Luciana Barroso, took a moment to gather his thoughts after Ricky’s comments before getting on with the show.
Once a red-carpet fixture, Ben and Jen are no more.
Despite the awkward moment, Matt later went on to win the Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in The Martian.
