Rebecca Gibney: How I outlasted my use-by date

Rebecca Gibney assumed her career would be over by the time she turned 40. Instead, she is 51 and more in demand than ever.
A woman in a white outfit, smiling, stands against a light blue background.

Her schedule is jam-packed, she is starring in a new TV series she conceived, developed and co-produced and sheโ€™s fielding new offers every day.

Itโ€™s success Rebecca never saw coming

โ€œI used to joke in my 20s and 30s that Iโ€™d have a use-by date and that was probably going to be around 40,โ€ she told news.com.au. โ€œAnd I used to think that was being self-deprecating but it actually wasnโ€™t.

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t self-deprecating, it was a form of self-sabotage โ€” and also because I thought โ€˜I donโ€™t want to disappoint myself if the jobs stop comingโ€™.

โ€œAnd you know what? Iโ€™m still really vital and Iโ€™m still interesting and Iโ€™ve got better stories to tell now than I did in my 20s.

โ€œI just want to keep working and keep producing and keep creating roles for older people and let Australia know that we donโ€™t dry up at 50, we are still incredibly vital because I know a lot of people my age and older who feel invisible, and weโ€™re not.

โ€œIf I can stay visible for the next 10, 20, 30 years then the people around me who are my age can also stay visible. And thatโ€™s what itโ€™s all about.โ€
