And after a win for the TV WEEK Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television in 2010, the TV vet is glad he “won it when he did”.

Speaking to TV WEEK on the red carpet at the TV WEEK Logie Awards, Ray revealed the reason why – and it’s all to do with Tom Gleeson.

“I’m not glad about what’s going on at the moment,” Ray admitted, referring to the “hard campaigning” that has taken place this year.

“It’s not my bag,” he said.

“I’m a bit old-fashioned,” he added. “I think you go to work and you do the best job you can and if people vote for you of their own volition that’s great and if they don’t that’s okay too.”

This year, nominee Tom Gleeson has been pushing for the public vote, while having a little dig at his fellow candidates.

While it’s all in jest, some have not seen it that way. For Tom himself, he’s pretty sure that he has it in the bag.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m probably going to win according to the polls,” Tom joked when speaking to TV WEEK on the red carpet, while adding, “I think the campaigning is going to be the new normal”.

While he’s quietly confident, he does have another winner in mind.

“I think it would be great if Amanda Keller won, because I’ve enjoyed her work over many, many years but I think that’s a problem that I’m not going to have, because I suspect I’m going to win,” he said.
