Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding will undoubtedly play out as a modern day fairytale — the dress! the castle! the carriage! the guestlist! But taking place outside of London (and for a royal who is unlikely to be a future king), it’s certain to have a different, more ‘relaxed’ energy to that of royal weddings past.
And the couple’s choice of song for their very first dance as man and wife is proof enough of that alone.
The Sun says, according to insiders, the soon-to-be-married pair have picked Whitney Houston’s 1987 hit “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”
The unusual song choice (which mind you, represents yet another break from tradition as couples typically opt for a slow ballad for the special first moment) is reportedly just one part of a “fun and bouncy” playlist put together by close friends in an effort to have all 1,200 royal wedding guests up and on their feet on the evening.
Harry and Meghan’s (delectable!) choice of cake, too, throws royal protocol out the window.
Kensington Palace recently confirmed that the duo had chosen Claire Ptak, owner of London-based Violet Bakery, to create a lemon elderflower wedding cake topped with fresh flowers.
“I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be chosen to make Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding cake,” Ptak said in a statement. “Knowing that they really share the same values as I do about food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and most importantly flavor, makes this the most exciting event to be a part of.”
Of course, members of the royal family traditionally serve fruit cake at their weddings because it lasts long enough to be served at the christening of the couple’s first child.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — Harry’s brother and sister-in-law — followed tradition for their royal wedding cake, asking local baker Fiona Cairns to create an eight-tiered fruit cake masterpiece.
Kate asked that Cairns use flowers symbolising the four nations of the United Kingdom — roses for England, thistle for Scotland, daffodils for Wales, and shamrocks for Ireland. And, in honour of her now-husband, the cake incorporated the flower Sweet William.
The beloved couple did, however, chose to bend the rules ever so slightly with a chocolate biscuit cake for the prince’s groom’s cake.
