Portraying an adoptive mother in the film, the 49-year-old was able to dig into her own personal experiences.

Bella, 23, and 21-year-old Connor became a part of Nicole’s family during her 11-year marriage to Tom Cruise.

Chatting to inTouch, the Aussie starlet addressed the idea of adoptive kids seeking out their biological parents.

“Every family’s experience with this is distinct and private,” she admitted.

Lion, based on a true story, is about an Australian couple whose adopted son from India sets out to find the family he was separated from as a child.

The film is already garnering Oscar buzz, with Nicole admitting it resonated with her on a personal level.

“It’s about the power of mothers – whether they are biological of adoptive. It’s very personal for me,” she mused to The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s been reported that Nicole, who is also the biological mother to daughters Sunday Rose, eight, and Faith Margaret, five, with husband Keith Urban, has a fractured relationship with her two eldest kids from her first marriage.

While Nic rarely speaks of her family, she did admit she’s thankful for her first marriage.

“I got married really fast and really young,” she revealed in 2012, “But I don’t regret that because it got me Bella and Connor and I did have a fantastic marriage for a long period.”

Explaining that she has “unconditional love” for her four kids, Nicole explained to DuJour magazine that she relies on technology to stay in touch with them.
