Hindsight is a funny thing.

Since Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth announced their split on the weekend, we’ve been going over all their old interviews and Instagram posts with a fine-tooth comb to see if there were any warning signs of trouble in paradise.

And it’s this Elle magazine interview with Miley released in early July, that really hints that the couple’s marriage was on shaky ground.

Opening up about her complex, modern relationship, Miley said she was uncomfortable with the term “wife”.

“I think it’s very confusing to people that I’m married,” she told Elle.

“I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word.

“But my relationship is unique. And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it.

“I mean, do people really think that I’m at home in a f***ing apron cooking dinner?”

Miley also explained her sexuality and revealed she is pansexual, meaning she is attracted to people based on personality, not gender.

“I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women. People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still fucking good, and I know that,” she said.

But the 26-year-old did say that she has chosen Liam as her partner, above all others.

“I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most.

Miley also revealed having children was not on the cards for her.

“We’ve been doing the same thing to the earth that we do to women,” she said.

“We just take and take and expect it to keep producing. And it’s exhausted. It can’t produce. We’re getting handed a piece-of-sh*t planet, and I refuse to hand that down to my child.

“Until I feel like my kid would live on an earth with fish in the water, I’m not bringing in another person to deal with that.

“If you don’t want children, people feel sorry for you, like you’re a cold, heartless b*h who’s not capable of love. Why are we trained that love means putting yourself second and those you love first? If you love yourself, then what? You come first.”

There’s also an interview Miley gave to The Sun newspaper two years ago that in hindsight, is actually quite pointed.

“I’m 24. I hope I get to live a little bit more. I have too much living to do [before I get married],” she at the time.

“Three years ago, if you’d asked me if I’d be here, this happy with this man, I’d have been stunned. I’m just riding this out. In some relationships, you lose yourself by being with someone else. Actually, it made me find myself more. I have no idea what the next three years will bring, but if it’s possible to get even happier, I’ll take it.”

Miley and Liam met in 2008 on the set of The Last Song, a romantic movie based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks.

They went public with their relationship in 2010 and became engaged in 2012, but broke it off a year later and then reunited in 2015 before their low-key wedding in December 2018.
