“It’s a dream come true for them and in particular Jasmine, who had her heart set on having a little girl, especially given Karl already has two boys, Jackson and River, from his relationship with his ex-wife Cass,” a source reveals to Woman’s Day.

The source added that Karl too was hoping for another girl as he finds himself more suited to the father-daughter bond that he shares with Ava, and he’s always shared a close relationship with his mother.

“He never had that strong male bond with his own father,” the source says.

“And while on the surface it looks like he’s strong with his brothers [Pete, 37, Tom, 34], they aren’t that close.”

While the pair seem to be on cloud nine after delivering the news to Jasmine and Karl’s family last week during a whirlwind trip to Queensland to celebrate Karl’s mum Jenny’s 70th, Woman’s Day learns they broke the news to Karl’s children two months ago when Jasmine was just eight weeks pregnant!

“The kids were naturally a little bit shocked and haven’t talked about it too much,” says the insider.

While Jackson, 20, and River, 13, were fine with the news, Ava, 14 – who recently changed her name to Willow and has always been Karl’s little girl – has taken a while to adjust.

“There’s been lots of tears but Karl has assured her that she will always be daddy’s little girl and that no new baby will ever replace their tight bond,” says the insider.

Insiders say the couple’s baby is due in May. Baby Stefanovic on board!

When Karl returns to Today next month, it won’t just be a new-look line-up, it will also be a much cheaper show.

“With the new team, Nine has shaved $2 million off its talent bill with the new stars earning half of what their failed predecessors banked,” claims one TV expert.

Co-host Deborah Knight, newsreader Tom Steinfort and weatherman Steve Jacobs lost their jobs in yet another Today bloodbath last week – which will save almost $2 million in big-ticket salaries.

The trio were replaced by Allison Langdon, Perth newsreader Tracy Vo and Weekend Today weather presenter Tim Davies – at half the price.

Meanwhile, former Sunday Night reporter Alex Cullen will take over from Tony Jones on the sports desk and Sylvia Jeffreys will keep her $750,000 salary in her new role as co-host of Today Extra.

Nine also confirmed entertainment reporter Brooke Boney will remain at Today – and also retain her $250,000 salary.
