Karl Stefanovic and Jasmine Yarbrough are preparing to fly off to Mexico in the coming days for their three-day wedding extravaganza – but sources say it’s all for show, as they’re actually already man and wife!

Woman’s Day understands that the couple, who began dating shortly after Karl separated from his wife of 21 years Cassandra Thorburn in 2016, secretly made their union official months ago, and have been keeping it firmly under wraps ever since.

Registry office

While Karl, 44, and Jasmine’s upcoming Mexico celebrations have been touted by many as the “showbiz wedding of the year”, their actual ceremony was reportedly a far more subdued affair.

A friend of Jasmine’s told our source the couple legally wed with little fanfare sometime mid-year at a suburban marriage registry office.

“The whole thing is just bizarre,” a source tells Woman’s Day.

“First, it was the commitment ceremony in March, which we all thought was for her family members who wouldn’t be able to make it to Mexico, and then the actual wedding, which means this whole time they’ve actually been married. We are all perplexed as to why. What’s the point?”

Indeed, the riddle as to whether or not Karl and Jasmine, 34, are married first began in March. The couple confirmed they’d exchanged vows during a romantic ceremony in Sydney’s Palm Beach, just two months after announcing their engagement.

The party was attended by just 30 of the couple’s nearest and dearest, including Karl’s youngest children Ava and River. His sister-in-law Sylvia Jeffreys cryptically called the day “a very special occasion” before wishing Karl and Jasmine “big love.”

Still, the Today host downplayed the marriage buzz, saying, “It’s a commitment ceremony. It was lovely.”

However, in August, tongues began wagging again after Jasmine referred to Karl’s other sister-in-law Jenna Dinicola as her “sister” on Instagram. Jenna, who is married to Karl’s brother Tom, replied, commenting, “Live it sister!”

According to our source, Karl and Jasmine were definitely married at this time.

Getting hitched in Mexico is no easy process, which our source says could be the reason Karl and Jasmine legalised their union earlier. It requires pages of documentation in both English and Spanish, and a series of medical tests, with strict guidelines if one or more of the party are divorced.

“It would’ve been all too hard. I wonder how they’re going to stage this? Maybe it will end up being a renewal of vows ceremony. Only time will tell,” adds the source.

At any cost

Jasmine and Karl’s Mexican nuptials are set to take place at the One&Only Palmilla Resort in San Jose del Cabo. Sources say the couple have booked out the chapel and reception area in order to make guests believe this is their “one and only” day.

“Karl just wants to gift Jasmine with an over-the-top lavish affair – at whatever cost,” says the source.

“But the question remains, what is the purpose of it all if it’s not even the wedding? A big party and celebration just so Jasmine gets the chance to show off her style on the world stage?”
