Cassandra Thorburn hated being married to a celebrity and nearly always refused to play the fame game, rejecting the red carpet and almost all the many requests to capitalise on their children and family life to boost her husband’s profile.
She and Karl Stefanovic, who split last month, had increasingly led separate lives for the past few years, as Karl embraced a jet- setting “playboy” lifestyle and spent time away from Cass and their three children on the road for 60 Minutes and Today.
“This has been coming a long time,” reveals one close friend, who says Karl’s love of the fast life drove a wedge between them.
Where did it all go wrong?
Meanwhile, Karl is rumoured to have already moved on and started dating other women, including a 25-year-old blonde record company marketing executive he met at Nine’s Willoughby headquarters, while Cass, 44, is devoting herself to their children.
“We all think it will turn extremely ugly and Cass will take him to the cleaners,” reveals the friend.
Karl, 42, and Cass last week met with real estate agents to organise to sell their $3 million home in Lindfield, after purchasing a $7 million harbourfront home, which Cass is expected to keep in the property settlement.

Cass appears to have a new outlook on life.
Last week, Cass took to Facebook to defend her role as a stay-at-home mum and reveal she had a part to play for Karl’s success at Today and its recent ratings win over Sunrise.
“Apparently Today Show finally won a year,” she said.
“This took a huge toll on my family and I, and I’m congratulating myself today for all the effort that went into making that happen.”
Meanwhile Cass has wasted no time planning her next move and has already met with celebrity agent Max Markson to talk about reviving her career in the media.
