A source told The Hollywood Reporter that Harrison Ford, 71, was injured by the Millennium Falcon door – the spaceship piloted by his reprised character from the original trilogy Han Solo – and due to reappear in the forthcoming installment.
“He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care. Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates,” a statement from Disney said.
It was not the first on-set mishap for Ford, with the then 40-year-old undergoing an operation for a herniated back disc while making Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
The J.J Abrahams-directed new Star Wars production will be set 30 years after the events in 1983’s Return of the Jedi, although details of the plot remain well hidden.
