They’re two of Australia’s biggest names in music, but now it seems Delta Goodrem and Guy Sebastian are about to become a certified TV power couple.
Speaking exclusively to Woman’s Day, a Seven insider reveals both Guy, 39, and Delta, 36, are being eyed off for a spot on the network’s most exciting new production – the relaunch of Australian Idol.
While fans may assume the pair would return to The Voice, which will be rehomed on the network next year, the insider insists they are to be rested from the show and will come back with a bang as judges on the beloved singing competition Australian Idol, which first hit our screens in 2003.
“Guy and Delta are something of two-for-one package,” laughs the insider.
“Wherever Delta lands, Guy seems to follow. They look out for each other and they’re both positioned to be taking over on the revamped Idol in 2022.
“The original plan would have been to have them on Idol early next year, but the show is made with live audiences, live voting and of course an electrifying live finale… and that can’t happen with the strict COVID regulations,” our source adds.
“So we’ll have to wait.”
When Nine announced it would be dropping The Voice, it left a dark cloud looming over the futures of the hitmakers, but it seems the pair have been in hot demand ever since.
“They’ve both enjoyed being off-contract and have a stream of offers coming their way, but if all goes to plan we’ll see them reunited on screen very soon on a show close to their hearts,” says the insider, who notes that Guy has always dreamed of returning to the show that made him a star, while Delta adores the format where she cut her teeth as a guest TV judge.
Certainly, the pair are a popular duo, and have grown an army of loyal fans, thanks to their close bond and onscreen chemistry. It was revealed a few years back their chemistry extended offscreen, too.
In 2015, Guy, who shares sons and Hudson, eight, and Archer, six, with wife of 12 years, Jules Sebastian, admitted to dating Delta in secret.
“A long time ago, I’d just won Idol [in 2003]… and I dated my [hall] pass, believe it or not,” he dished. “[Jules’] was Heath Ledger. Mine was Delta. And I dated Delta, for a few months. No one knew about it,” he said of their shock romance.
Delta, who is now in a long-term relationship with her guitarist Matthew Copley, later confirmed the hot fling, insisting it was a “long time ago” and “brief”.
The reunion will come as welcome news to Guy, who has faced a difficult 2020, with the challenges brought by this year reportedly causing strain for the singer and his wife Jules, 40.
In July, Guy’s former manager Titus Day was arrested, accused of defrauding the singer of $1.15 million in royalties, claims he denies. The case is ongoing.
Guy confessed the fallout has put a strain on his professional and personal life. “I was going to a writing session and I had all the negative thoughts. ‘What are you going to do in a session, you haven’t written a song for ages…'”
