When you have as many talents as Delta Goodrem, you’re bound to be busy!
From touring her music internationally, to her work on television, to becoming engaged to her long-time partner Matthew Copley, Delta has been a busy bee in 2023 – and she’s even found time to fit in another major project: a movie.
Love Is In The Air premiered on Netflix last week, and has already skyrocketed to number one around the world.
The new rom-com proved popular in Canada, The US, The UK, and, of course, Australia. It was the number one movie globally over the weekend as it took the Number One spot in 30+ countries, with Delta expressing her joy on Instagram following the news.
“Fly movie fly!!! Soooo happy,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside party emojis.
In case you haven’t seen it yet, the Netflix romantic comedy tells the story of “a seaplane pilot falling for the man sent to sink her business.”
“She’s ultra-committed to her job, strong, independent, a go-getter. At the heart of it, Dana wants to keep the memory of her mum alive through their shared passion for flying and helping the community,” Delta told TV WEEK.
Delta stars alongside Joshua Sasse (Galavant), Roy Billing (Jack Irish, Underbelly) and the hilarious comedian Steph Tisdell (who recently starred in Class Of ’07).
When talking about Joshua’s character, Delta revealed: “She’s quickly suspicious of why he’s flown all the way from the UK to see how their business runs. But as the story unfolds, her perspective on him gradually changes.”
“[Joshua’s] a phenomenal actor. He finds amazing details and nuances in every scene, because he’s that talented.”
The premiere was so popular, some fans are even calling for a sequel – or for Delta to star in a Christmas movie.
“Just finished and my consensus is that you need to a Christmas rom-com,” one fan wrote.
“I’ve watched it three times,” added another.
Of course, this isn’t Delta’s first movie role, with the songstress taking on the role of Olivia Newton-John in the biopic of her life – Olivia Newton-John: Hopelessly Devoted To You in 2018.
Speaking about the role at the time, Delta said that it was one that she “couldn’t imagine not doing.”
“Olivia is someone I’ve looked up to as a role model,” she explained to TV WEEK. “I wanted to take care of this role, and nurture it the way Olivia has cared for me over the years.”
When TV WEEK asked about her big return to acting, Delta revealed she couldn’t wait to return to her roots.
“No nerves. I was more excited to go back to the passion for acting that started my career, initially, as a child,” she said.
“I grew up in front of the camera [in Neighbours, where she played Nina Tucker from 2002] and it was so great to bring the story to life with such a fantastic cast and crew.”
Although the singer was originally made famous for her well-known for her role on Neighbours as Nina Tucker, the 38-year-old set her focus on music after leaving the show and signing with Sony at just the age of 15.
Delta recently spoke to The Australian Women’s Weekly about her work ethic and the drive she had that most teenagers lack, saying “I was enamoured with this idea of creating stories with acting and music.
“I was very much the driver,” Delta said about her parents role in her young stardom.
“My mother was a lioness in teaching me to hold my own space. My parents had incredible common sense and stayed by my side the whole time. I was never anywhere without a parent next to me when it came to being in an adult world. And they instilled in me that sense of, ‘If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.’ You have to show up on time and do a good job.”
Who knows, perhaps this new Netflix movie will spark Delta’s permanent return to our screens!
