Cody Simpson opened up about his not new romance with the “wonderful” Miley Cyrus on The Project on Tuesday night, and has defended his girlfriend after she found herself in a bit of hot water this week, when she suggested her breakup with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth had turned her gay.
Cody was a guest panellist on the Channel 10 news program as part of his promotional duties for The Masked Singer, after he was unveiled as the Robot during the show’s finale on Monday.
Hosts Carrie Bickmore, Tommy Little and Hamish Macdonald grilled the 22-year-old about his relationship with Miley, which the new couple have been proudly flaunting all over Instagram.
When asked if Miley knew about his secretive appearance on the show, Cody admitted he had spilled the beans.
“I told her yeah,” Cody confessed.
“It’s funny, I taped before we were actually really together and the week I sang one of her her songs – I did a medley of Jolene and Nothing Breaks Like A Heart – we were talking but we weren’t actually together and when it all sort of came out that we were together, it was like the week that I sang that song,” he said.
“So it was a very strange little synchronised [situation].”
When asked about Miley’s controversial comments earlier this week – in a live chat with Cody, Miley said: “You don’t have to be gay, there are good people with d–ks out there, you’ve just got to find them. You’ve got to find a d–k that’s not a d–k, you know?” – Cody stood by his lady.
“People took that the wrong way,” he said.
“You don’t choose who you fall for, you don’t choose who you love, whatever gender, whoever you are. No, she’s wonderful,” he said of Miley.

Miley and Cody have been posing up a storm on Instagram lately.
(Credit: Instagram)The Project hosts teased Cody about some of the steamy couple pics he and Miley have been uploading to Instagram, in particular one image, which you can see below, where Miley has her hand stuffed down Cody’s pants.
“Someone who knows well and truly what’s under the Robot costume … that is a thorough investigation. Are you wearing underwear? Or is she holding your junk for support?” host Tommy Little joked.
Cody replied: “I don’t remember. You’d have to ask her.”
He added: “My mum reposted that, which is really weird. I was like mum , you’re reposting a photo of my girlfriend with her hand in my pants, she was like, ‘I was young once don’t worry’. I’m like, ‘Mum, what? You’re OK with this?’ She said, ‘Yeah it’s fine’.
When asked if Miley has his mother’s “tick of approval”, Cody said, “Yeah she does, she loves her.”

“I just always had an affinity for her,” he said.
“I was nine when she first came out on her first TV show I just always had a crush on her. I told her that and it worked,” he joked.
