She’s one of the most beautiful women in the world, but don’t expect a carefully curated selfie from Cate Blanchett any time soon.
In a recent interview with Yahoo Beauty, the 46-year-old actress slammed the popular social media practice, labelling the process of taking a photo of yourself to share with people “pathetic.”
Not holding back, the mother of four criticised society’s obsession with selfies and said she “can’t handle” the culture that has stemmed from it.
“People constantly are taking pictures of ourselves to send them to people to see if they like me, ‘do they like me?’”
“It’s pathetic, the whole thing about people worrying about what other people are going to think.”
And while Cate does concede that social media can be a genuine way to build a community, she is baffled as to why we participate in the act of presenting ourselves as a way to be liked.
“[It] comes back to self-respect,” she continued.
“It’s this huge thing. “Like me! Like me!” The like and the dislike is just totally primary schoolyard.”
“I cannot for the life of me work out why adults are participating in that s**t.”
