Following Carrie Bickmore’s shock announcement that she’s taking a break “for a few months” from her TV work and moving to the UK to spend more time with her family, industry whispers are already circulating about her career moves when she returns – and it may not be good news for The Project fans!
According to a well-placed source, Carrie, 41, has been in hot demand for years now and with her new sabbatical leaving a gap in her contract with Ten, rival TV networks are ready to pounce.
“Every network wants Carrie and you bet they’re going to pitch her the entire world while she’s away from the clutches of Ten,” the insider spills to Woman’s Day.
“I won’t be surprised if she moves away from The Project given the ratings, and after all that time with her family she’ll be ready to take on something bigger like breakfast TV.”
And who better to persuade her to move from evenings to mornings? None other than Karl Stefanovic, with the Today host said to be using their close friendship as a bartering tool to get her to jump ship over to Nine.
“Karl knows Carrie, and they could be the dream team – they could laugh themselves out of any situation, but he respects the fact that she’s not afraid to stand up to him.”
While it remains to be seen if Carrie will return to front The Project, our spy says there’s a possibility the show may not survive her departure, with Ten said to be keeping a close eye on the program’s ratings while she’s away to determine its future.
Carrie broke the news last Tuesday on the show, and she made a separate announcement on her Instagram.
Alongside a snap with her family, she announced: And we’re off ✈️…..Chris and I and the kids are finally doing something we have dreamed off for a while now….and in April we are heading overseas for a family adventure for a few months.
“One of the unexpected silver linings to come out of living through Melbourne’s lockdowns was the extended family time and we feel like this is our last chance to do something like this together before Ollie hits the pointy end of his schooling and no longer wants to hang out with us 🤣 so…we are heading to the UK for a school term.
“After 13 years on the The Project desk it feels a little like long-service leave☺️I’ll miss you all, but you’ll still hear me across the airwaves every afternoon on the @carrietommyshow and I’ll be back on the Project desk in a few months 💋,” she wrote.
