For any couple whoโ€™ve been lucky enough to enjoy a decades-long union, one thing theyโ€™d almost always agree on is that marriage is hard work.

And one of the most enduring couples in showbiz, Cameron Daddo and Alison Brahe, can attest to that, after announcing that after more than 30 years together, theyโ€™ve made a major decision.

โ€œWeโ€™ve recently gone back into some coupleโ€™s therapy,โ€ Cameron, 58, announced on their hit podcast Separate Bathrooms, adding that while their relationship โ€œis at an 11โ€ they chose to โ€œjump back into a little maintenanceโ€.

โ€œSometimes we can get lost in the minutiae of little things feeling like they are huge things,โ€ Alison, 53, clarifies.

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s why I was saying to you the other day, I said, โ€˜We actually have a really good relationship. Letโ€™s not toss everything out, the baby with the bathwater,โ€™ and just go, โ€˜This part needs attention for sureโ€™.โ€

โ€œWe just need to work on reconnecting, little things,โ€ she adds, with Cameron confirming they needed some โ€œtweaksโ€. โ€œBut Iโ€™m really happy with where weโ€™re at right now.โ€

AIRING IT OUT

Cameron and Alison have never shied away from airing their private battles with their fans, with the pair admitting they hope that by doing so through their podcast, it will help other people through relationship problems.

โ€œItโ€™s warts and all,โ€ laughs Cameron. โ€œItโ€™s not a photoshopped Insta-version of our livesโ€ฆ itโ€™s reflections on how weโ€™ve made it this far.โ€

GOLDEN COUPLE

Thirty-five years ago, boy-next-door Cameron quit as host of Perfect Match Australia and went on to find his ideal woman in top model Alison.

Their romance made for fairytale headlines. He was the countryโ€™s most eligible bachelor, while her sunny beach beauty featured on scores of magazine covers.

Of course, they would live happily ever after, just like the bridegroomโ€™s mother and father, whose December wedding anniversary they share. Except it didnโ€™t quite work out like that!

Chasing Cameronโ€™s acting dream to Hollywood in 1992, stardom proved elusive, despite roles in blockbuster series The Mentalist, CSI and Nikita.

Alison was shattered when, in 1994, Cameron confessed to cheating on her.

โ€œInfidelity shaped our marriage like nothing else,โ€ she says today.

โ€œI was deeply insecure. I felt so much lesser than Cam, the Perfect Match prince. I had really lost myself.โ€

They separated briefly, then decided their โ€œundeniable, unconditional loveโ€ made it worth fighting to save the relationship.

โ€œTherapy โ€“ back then a very LA solution โ€“ proved to be the answer. Iโ€™d say thatโ€™s where our marriage evolved the most,โ€ smiles Alison.

โ€œWe had to understand why we were so attracted to each other, what our downfalls were, and ways we could work to stay together.โ€

The coupleโ€™s troubles were far from over, however. They rescued their marriage but financial ruin came knocking. With three children, Lotus, 27, River, 23, and Bodhi, 17, only $100 in the bank and on the verge of homelessness and bankruptcy, Cameron and Alison have remained strong and thanks to their candour, are enjoying a career resurgence with podcast Separate Bathrooms.

UNEXPECTED SUCCESS

Originally a 10-part series, Separate Bathrooms has been running since 2019 and the insanely popular podcast shows no sign of flagging.

โ€œWhen we posted photos together, people would always say things like, โ€˜It looks so easy for you.โ€™ But it wasnโ€™t as if weโ€™d been touched by a magic wand that gave us a brilliant relationship that doesnโ€™t have the trials and tribulations everybody elseโ€™s does.โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s why we started the podcast, to say youโ€™re not alone and it does work, but youโ€™ve got to put in the work.โ€

The Daddos โ€“ and their enduring marriage โ€“ are the living, breathing proof of that.
