The 69th Emmy Awards are upon us, my friends. They’re like the Academy Awards, but a little less self-important and a lot more fun and we are ready.
While we’re all fascinated by what happens on the red carpet, we’re looking at you Sofia Vergara, deep down we realise it’s an award show. Obviously there are a lot of awards going out but, no offence costume design, we’re here to see who takes home the Best Actress trophy, and we’ve already got our predictions.
There’s quite a few different Best Actress fields, so let’s go through one by one:
LEAD ACTRESS, TV MOVIE/LIMITED SERIES
Carrie Coon, Fargo
Reese Witherspoon, Big Little Lies
Jessica Lange, Feud: Bette and Joan
Felicity Huffman, American Crime
Nicole Kidman, Big Little Lies
Susan Sarandon, Feud: Bette and Joan
Could we ever go past Our Nicole? Although both she and best friend Reese Witherspoon gave phenomenal performances in Big Little Lies , it was Nicole’s convincing portrayal of a woman hiding an abusive relationship that nudges her across the line to best performance.
Either way, both are stoked to be nominated with Reese taking to social media in July to share her excitement over the show’s nominations.
“Wow! So thrilled about the #Emmys Nominations for #BigLittleLies! The cast and crew worked so hard to make this happen! Thanks to all the fans,” she wrote.
Nicole was also thrilled with the series success.
“It really connected. People really got it,’ Nicole told EW. “It’s just unheard of! It’s a shared victory and a shared joy.”
ACTRESS, DRAMA
Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid’s Tale
Keri Russell, The Americans
Claire Foy, The Crown
Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld
Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder
Robin Wright, House of Cards
To say we’re living in a golden age of television is a massive understatement – all of these shows have the same production value as big budget blockbusters and have us sobbing, laughing and terrified all in one episode. Despite the quality of the actors, there’s no way this award won’t go to Elisabeth Moss. Her restrained simmering and anguish on this year’s most disturbing series will surely be the performance to get across the line after seven nominations for her work on Mad Men and Top of the Lake.
ACTRESS, COMEDY
Pamela Adlon, Better Things
Jane Fonda, Grace and Frankie
Allison Janney, Mom
Ellie Kemper, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Tracee Ellis Ross, Black-ish
Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie
With Trump at the helm, you can’t go past a show that pokes fun at the vapid side of politics. Julia has already received the most nominations of any actress in Emmys history and the most wins of any actress in Emmys history. She’ll win, and she’ll win again until Veep signs of in 20118.
What a year, we can’t wait to see what happens. And if you made a bet based off these predictions, I expect a cut – thanks.
