When she first hit our screens on Australian Idol in 2004, Casey Donovan’s style was limited to the confines of a fashion industry which tailored to thin bodies.
“During my time on Idol, the stylist would ask me what kind of clothes I liked and I said: ‘boys clothes and anything that will fit me from Tree of Life,’ Casey wrote for a post on The Carousel in 2016. “That was not only what I was used to wearing, but the only clothes that would fit.”
Back then, the musician found it “almost impossible” to find clothes and styles that suited her.
“Fashion was not on my side unless I wanted to look like a pastel-coloured pavlova on a summer’s day,” she wrote. “Shopping for me was not fun.”
Upon leaving Idol, Casey’s experience with clothes was accompanied by a “constant battle with food”.
“There was that feeling of, ‘I should stop eating’,” the singer told our sister site Woman’s Day in 2023, explaining that one of the show’s biggest sponsors at the time was McDonalds.
She continued: “Then: ‘Oh, but I’m eating the good things – but now I’m eating too much of the good things.’ There was just never any real guidance. And [my] music wasn’t working, so I stopped that and got a normal job. I was clinging to everything that made me feel better. And that was food.”
Almost 20 years on, Casey has never felt more self-assured.
“There’s certainly a lot of confidence that’s grown in this woman,” she told Woman’s Day. “It’s been so great to embrace that.”
It is a confidence that has heightened as the fashion industry continues to acknowledge and cater to plus size bodies. As a result, Casey’s relationship with clothes has evolved, and she loves experimenting with colour and accessories. This is why the musician is collaborating with local plus-sized label Taking Shape for a dazzling collection of evening gowns and party outfits.
“These gowns make me feel so fabulous,” says Casey, who will showcase the gorgeous collection in all its glory during this year’s Christmas Carols and New Year’s Eve concerts.
“I can’t wait to perform in them,” the singer adds. “I’m sure you’ll love them as much as I do.”
