Christie, who played Kirsty Phillips on-and-off from 2000 to 2009, revealed on her Hit100.9 radio show on Tuesday that Britney was cast for a small role in the early 2000s.

“She was a fan of watching Home and Away.. She expressed interest to be on the show,” Christie said.

“Our producer Russel called a cast meeting and said, ‘Britney Spears wants to be on Home and Away, does anyone object?'”

Christie said the entire cast except for Ray Meagher was keen on Britney’s cameo, which was set to take place while the pop star was visiting Australia to promote her film Crossroads.

“He was like, ‘oh…probably not a great idea,’ because he knew it would ruin the illusion of the show,” she said.

“Everyone in the end said yes. [Britney] was written into this small scene and it was her just dashing through the diner. Her character name was just ‘beautiful girl’,” Christie laughed.

“I was I was going to be in the scene with her. It was scripted but she pulled out of it last minute because sadly 9/11 happened. I was so bummed.”

Christie said the Toxic hitmaker’s scene involved her sitting down in the diner eating a burger when Kirsty, Sam Marshall and Nick Smith would walk past.

“We were all meant to walk past her and they were going to check her out and be like, ‘Hey, what are you doing in Summer Bay?’ It made no sense,” she laughed.

Despite the pop star not getting to live out her dreams of starring on Home and Away, Summer Bay has still had its fair share of celebrity cameos over the years.

In 2015, singer Ed Sheeran played Teddy, who came to the Bay to visit his old nanny, Marilyn (Emily Symons.)

Other celeb cameos have included Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac, tennis star Lleyton Hewitt and music royalty John Farnham.
