Showcasing their crazy life on MTV’s 2002 self-titled reality show, we fell in love with Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne, wife Sharon and their two kids Jack and Kelly.
But there was one person missing from the famed reality show, the Osbourne’s eldest daughter, Aimee, who was just 18 when the show began.
Now 32, Aimee has revealed why she decided to shun the cameras.
“Back then, I still felt I was trying to figure out who I was in the chaos of family life, so why on earth would I want that portrayed on television?” she explained in a new interview with [The Independent].
She added: “I wanted to protect myself, my parents, my siblings, too. They were very young, very impressionable.”
Despite Aimee’s reservations, her family proceeded with the show, and became household names.
“It didn’t matter what I thought, ultimately. This was their path, their decision, and they were of course at liberty to take the opportunity. Which they did,” she added.
Her family’s life became an open book, from her mum’s battle with colon cancer, her father’s issue with sobriety and her younger siblings’ issues with school and later on substance abuse.
Kelly also attributed her time on the show as a contributing factor to her issue with drugs and alcohol.
The 32-year-old was exceptionally candid about her relationship with her family today. Aimee acknowledged she is no longer close to her siblings.
“I wouldn’t say there is an ease between us, but there is an acceptance. Do we socialise? No.”
She went on to explain, “I suppose I was the one that had to be in control a lot of the time. But then it came naturally. And, for me, watching people get out of control, and be indulgent and dramatic was… well, very silly. When you are already surrounded by that kind of thing, you either surrender fully and accept it as your destiny, or you think to yourself, ‘You know what? I’m not going to try that, actually.’ OK, it may have been their thing, but I didn’t want to do that. I kept it together, mostly.”
It’s amazing that Aimee managed to escape the spotlight. But now the 32-year-old is trying to make a name for herself as a musician under the name ARO (her initials: Aimee Rachel Osbourne).
“It’s been a frustrating journey, a lot of trial and error. For years it felt like I was swimming in the ocean, all by myself,” she admitted.
She may be the daughter of a music legend but Aimee insists her music is very different to her dad’s.
“I never had to battle for my identity. I have always been me. I’ve lived through a lot of dark environments one way or another while growing up, and that has influenced my songwriting. And, yes, I suppose melancholy is a running theme.”
