The surprising makeup tips we learnt going backstage at The Voice

We hung out on set with The Voice’s makeup and hair director, Nicole Thompson from MAC Cosmetics and discovered how she gets the contestants looking stage-ready each week.

Head of beauty at The Voice, Nicole reminded us that if you start with good skin, your makeup’s going to look way better!

First up, she soaked their skin with moisturising serum and a hydrating spray like MAC Fix Blast and allowed it to marinade while the hair was being done.

But before makeup application, Nicole blotted any excess moisture off with a tissue so that their complexions looked dewy, not greasy!

TV tricks! The most surprising thing Woman’s Day learnt was the fact that The Voice‘s makeup guru Nicole Thompson didn’t use bronzer on the stars, instead opting for taupe shade of eye shadow dusted under the cheeks to help create killer cheekbones.

She didn’t use bronzer! Contouring is very subtle, but bronzer was off the table, as she says it can look quite red and harsh on TV, not dissimilar to real life.

Instead, Nicole used a taupe shade of eye shadow dusted under the cheeks to help create killer cheekbones. The trick here is to blend, blend, blend for a seamless finish.

Shimmer and shine… Nicole uses an illuminating cream on top of foundation to create a natural finish.

So that the contestants didn’t look like they were wearing a tonne of makeup, after Nicole applied foundation and concealer, she gently patted on an illuminating cream to tone back the look.

She did this simply with MAC Strobe Cream and applied it to the high points of the face cheekbones, brow bones and down the middle of the nose.

If you try this at home, just avoid a shimmery cream, as it has a knack of highlighting wrinkles and creases.
