Bec and Lleyton: A new start for Australia’s star couple?

Pregnant Bec and husband Lleyton look to move their growing family to a new home…

Looking happy and relaxed, Bec and Lleyton Hewitt couldn’t hide their excitement as they checked out a vacant lot in Tennyson, an exclusive beachside Adelaide suburb. The couple took in the stunning Southern Ocean views, pacing around the lot as they discussed the possibilities for a large family home.

Their interest in the land has fuelled growing rumours that, with a new baby on the way, the couple are planning to move their growing family nearer the Hewitt clan and away from the hectic pace of Sydney.

Bec and Lleyton have been spending more time in Adelaide recently, as Lleyton completes his recuperation after serious hip surgery. Staying at his parents’ house with Bec and daughter Mia seems to have inspired the tennis pro to go back to his roots as the couple await the arrival of the newest addition to their family…

Kristy Hinze’s runway success

By Monique Butterworth

Project Runway Australia host Kristy Hinze, 27, is not the only one who’s proud of her latest role — so is her boyfriend, 63-year-old Texan billionaire and Netscape founder, Jim Clark.

Were you surprised at the level of design talent you would uncover?

Not surprised, because I have always known in Australia we have such great design talent. I was more validated when each week they kept getting better and better and nailing the challenges.

You have commissioned some pieces from some of the designers…

There are a few things I want! The dress that Juli won the challenge with Kelly Rowland last week, I want one of those dresses! She’s making me one. I can’t wait.

What aspects of the role/show do you love the most?

I love seeing what they come out with every week. I loved being surprised. When you think of the challenge and you think it will suit one particular person and then seeing what they did and maybe not being right all the time, that part was surprising.

What aspects of the role/show do you dislike?

Having to eliminate people is a really tough job, because they all work really hard. Just because they get eliminated doesn’t mean they’re not good. It just means they weren’t suited to that particular challenge. That’s the hard thing about this show, they can’t just be good designer at one thing, they’ve got to be able to fill a broad spectrum of things.

How do you get along with your fellow judges? Are your decisions generally unanimous or is there plenty of healthy debate?

There’s debate because we’re all looking at different things. Sarah is a buyer so she’s very commercial. Jayson is a designer and knows what really goes into making a garment – cuts and fabrics and things like that. And me, I know how to wear dresses and I know how they feel. I know fabrics also because of 14 years of experience with designers and wearing things. We all look from different areas and it’s not always a unanimous decision. We do not always agree with each other when we’re deliberating.

You’ve taken on a “mother hen” role with the designers. Are you close to them?

Yes. I love them. I feel like a proud Mum.

Will you be staying in touch with some of the designers after the show?

Oh, yes! If they want to stay in touch with me.

You just enjoyed a holiday in the Mediterranean. What did you get up to?

I had a fabulous time, I needed a break, it was wonderful! We had a great time, lots of relaxing, doing pilates and yoga. I read a few books.

What’s next for you?

I’m still currently working with Sportscraft. I’ve co-designed a “Kristy” bag for Sportscraft which we’ll launch in September. I go back to New York and Miami for a few jobs and then I’m back on September 15 to launch the bag. That was a fun little project. It’s actually very nice!

The Project Runway Australia finale screens Monday, September 15 at 8.30pm on Foxtel’s Arena Channel

I joined alcoholics anonymous to find a husband

“My name is Amanda,” I started, “and I’m an alcoholic. I started secretly drinking when I was 15, and now have found that my job and my life are both suffering. Nobody knows I drink, except my liver, and I want to change.”

The lies flew out of my mouth, just as I had rehearsed them. I used the pain of my latest heartbreak to present the tears that were needed for the impact I had hoped for. Once I had finished, everyone applauded, with Claudia, the coordinator giving me a comforting hug as I left the podium.

Why was I there? Not to bear my soul about a made-up disease, but to finally meet a man worth meeting. Someone whose life depended on being sober. Someone with enough self-esteem to not disappear into a bottle every night. Someone with goals, determination, strength, backbone.

I am a widowed woman of 36, with two small children to bring up on my own. I have unsuccessfully dated men who decide that going for a drink is the only entertaining night we could have. Even a night at the movies has to end at the pub. I am over it.

I don’t like drunks. I don’t like the personality changes that happen after a few drinks. I don’t understand it. I couldn’t even begin to guess how many slurred pick-up lines I have heard when I am out with the girls, delivered by sickly sweet alcoholic breath. It’s not what I want in my life, or my children’s.

I scoured many AA meetings in different suburbs to find the right group of people. I knew exactly what I wanted — a man who had been sober for at least a year who had started to rebuild his life successfully. Someone who would appreciate the love and support of a ‘kindred’ spirit.

The idea had come to me five months before. My partner at the time confessed to having a drunken one-night stand, but said that it “meant nothing” — it was just the alcohol. He regretted it and would never do it again. Blah, blah, blah. The relationship before that ended after some violent mood swings ruined a fun night out.

So how does a single woman meet a man that won’t rely on alcohol to boost his personality? One who has recognised the problem, and lost a lot because of it. Someone whose life mission was to be sober and stay that way.

My parents were alcoholics, my sister, and even I had flirted with the disease in my early twenties. So, as shameless as it appears, I did the only thing I could think of to find my ideal partner.

His name was Matt, and he was the most beautiful man I had ever laid eyes on. As he spoke, he did so with strength, humility, and shame at the past. But he was proud of himself for his “now”. He had stayed single and sober for three years. He was a man who had nearly lost everything. I feared that my heartbeat could be heard from where he stood. He was just so perfect.

His wife had left him and he was fired from his $150,000 a year job. It took him three months of dancing with a bottle of scotch before his “light” went on. His children refused to see him because they didn’t love the drunken daddy anymore.

He lost his children, his wife left the state, and a counsellor took him to AA.

His beautiful blue eyes told of the heartbreak he had suffered at his own hands, his strong handsome jaw portrayed his sullen resolve. His well-built body showed the health he now enjoyed after being sober for so long. I think I fell in love with him before he spoke, and as he told me later, he was in love with me.

The next six months were a whirlwind for me. At that meeting, he introduced himself to me and we became inseparable. Within eight months, we were married. It’s been two years of bliss for me now. I cannot imagine life without him.

I just adore the man, from the minute I wake up, to when I drift off in his arms. I’m never wondering where he is, nor fearing that dreaded drunken punchline I had heard so many times before.

I still go to the meetings with him, we don’t stand up to speak so much anymore, and we sit there for the support and guidance that Matt thrives on so much. If he ever found out, I don’t think I would be able to live with the consequence. So, I just keep it as my little secret. We all have to have them, don’t we?

Take a look at all the latest racing looks for 2009 here

Myer continued its theme of bringing the sunshine to the masses last night at Circa in Melbourne with a glamorous, star-studded parade which saw celebrities like Vince Colosimo, Michael Klim, Myer’s Racing Ambassador Rebecca Twiggley, Laura Newton lining the golden-paved catwalk to catch a glimpse of what 2009 holds for racing fashions.

Myer’s Director of Apparel Judy Coomber introduced a mix of Australian and international Myer designers including Rebecca Taylor, Karen Walker, Cue, Jayson Brunsdon, TL Wood, Tara Jarmon, Moschino Cheap and Chic, Wayne Cooper, Maticevski and Yeojin Bae, and featured lots of metallics, silks and bright colours for Myer’s Spring racing parade. Coomber also announced that the infamous stylist, Patricia Fields, would be creating an exclusive capsule collection for Myer for the Spring racing season.

The style tips for the racing season? Judy Coomber says, “This year it is about elegance and a more coordinated look with a big hint of fun. For the girls, silks and ruffles and maxi dresses will make a big statement on the track while the pillbox is making a feminine comeback.”

And for the men? “For the men, slim-line suits should be coordinated with lots of accessories including braces and hats of course. Men should not be afraid to wear bold prints and colour. That is the strong message for the Spring racing season”, says Coomber.

Spring racing season is as much about the fashions on the field as it is about the horse racing and The Weekly takes a look back in time to see just how much the fashions on the field have changed. Join us in this trip back to the early 1900’s to see the trends and styles that made the headlines through the years.

Spring into summer with a slimming detox!

By Judy Davie

Imagine this: Summer has arrived, it’s time to shed your layers of clothes and bare your flesh to the outside world… and you can’t wait to do it.

This may sound far-fetched, but with three months to prepare, unveiling a summer body that’s more vibrant than ever before can be your reality — with a bit of work, that is!

Start with a four-week spring detox. Eliminate wheat, cow’s dairy (except natural yoghurt) red meat, refined carbohydrates and sugars, caffeine and alcohol. It may seem like a stretch, but I promise you, if you can stick to it you will hardly recognise yourself by the end of four weeks. You’ll feel better physically and mentally.

A good detox will crank up the metabolism, flush the system and kick start us into the new season. Not only will it boost your energy and vitality, you’ll shed a couple of kilos at least and feel so amazing that there’s nothing else to do than keep on keeping on.

Plan in advance and buy all the ingredients in readiness. The health aisle is a good place to pick up calcium-fortified rice milk, rice cakes, tahini and decaffeinated tea.

Read the labels before you buy rye bread to ensure you buy one made from 100 per cent rye flour and no wheat. You may have to take a trip to the bakers for that or a quality health food store that sells bread. And stock up with fresh fruit and veggies. You can enjoy unlimited amounts of fresh veggies.

And never forget to exercise — there’s enough food in this plan to support you with energy to exercise. Both cardio and weight bearing are the most effective to burn fat, encourage elimination, maintain bone density and boost the metabolism. Good luck!

And once you’ve gone through the detox meal plan, don’t miss Judy’s detoxifying food swaps!
