Do you put work before your children?

Father and son, Getty Images

THIS new UK research which gives rise to similar questions about Australian families, has found that the quality of middle-class family life is on the down-turn as working parents feel the pinch to work longer hours rather than spend time with their families at home.

The Department for Schools government study of nearly 4000 parents and children in the UK found that middle-class parents are ‘cash rich’ but ‘time poor’ with around 50 per cent feeling that their time would be better spent at home sharing a family meal and helping their kids with their home work.

Interestingly, only 44 per cent of parents in higher earning brackets spent time at home with their families four times a week, whereas 60 per cent of lower earners enjoyed regular family time at home.

“Parents feel completely inadequate. They read about parents who cook a fresh meal every night, chat with their kids and read them a story. That world does not exist any more,” says Margaret Morrissey, from lobby group Parents Outloud.

The research found that while work-pressured parents were compensating for a lack of time spent at home by taking their families on special weekend breaks, children in these strained families are actually more likely to take risks such as taking drugs, drinking and fighting with other children.

Older women, younger men

Rachel and Jarrett dated for three years and were rumoured to be engaged. But in 2009 Jarrett, who is 13 years her junior, reportedly called off the wedding.

Unlucky in love Jen went through an on-again, off-again relationship with John Mayer who is 8 years her junior.

There is certainly no secret that 51 year old Madonna is all about dating younger men! She was married to Guy Ritchie, 10 years her junior before she moved on…

…to boyfriend Jesus who is less than half her age!

With a nine year age difference, this couple have been together five years and have a one-year-old daughter, Nahla together.

Nick and Mariah who have a 10 year age difference between them married in 2008. The pair is often photographed in loved-up shots together.

The 20 year age gap didn’t stop Elizabeth Taylor from marrying her seventh husband, construction worker Larry Fortensky in 1991. The wedding was held at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, and he walked her down the aisle. But their marriage ended in 1996.

Barbara and Naveen Andrews, who have a 22 year age gap between them, were briefly separation in 2005, in which time Naveen fathered a child with another woman. But the couple have since reconciled.

I prefer my husband now he’s a woman

Words and pictures: © Anna Moore/Angela Knott/Woman/IPC+ Syndication

When Christine’s fiancé told her he needed to live as a woman her world collapsed… but now they’re married.

Christine thought a trip to Greece was the perfect opportunity to meet the man of her dreams. And when she got talking with “good-looking” Matt Edwards, the two hit it off straight away.

From the start she was impressed with the fact that he didn’t seem too macho, but little did Christine know that from the age of 18 Matt had been hiding his belief that he was a woman born in a male body, and had become a master at fooling everybody — including himself.

But when 20-year-old Christine met him she realised she’d found someone special. Before long the two were madly in love and decided to move in together in England.

“For a while life was good,” Christine remembers. “We were a normal couple with a healthy sex life. I felt lucky that I had a man I could connect with.”

But keeping the enormous secret caused Matt — normally a loving partner — to have fits of anger he couldn’t explain, especially around gender-specific activities like shopping.

Despite these occasional outbursts, he and Christine were happy together, and after two years they decided to marry, setting the date for October 2007.

“I was excited, but Matt withdrew into himself,” Christine says. “Then he said he was going to see a counsellor.”

Initially, Christine was glad, hoping therapy might help. But after the first session he made a shocking announcement.

Matt said that, although he had a male body, his brain was female, and he needed to live as a woman to be true to himself…

Guy and Jules’ tragic loss: How love pulled us through

Exclusive: Guy Sebastian and his wife Jules finally talk about coping with the biggest challenge of their lives together.

The text message was brief and ominous: “Phone home, bad news.” Singer Guy Sebastian and his gorgeous wife Jules were only six days into their honeymoon when family tragedy shattered their newlywed bliss.

Shockingly, they discovered that Jules’ happy-go-lucky big brother Andrew Egan — a loving husband and father to two little girls — had died through suicide.

Less than a week before, he had been the life and soul of the party at their Sydney wedding reception — breakdancing, cracking jokes and beaming with excitement when he was introduced to former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins.

His wife Trudy was one of Jules’ bridesmaids. His older daughter, three-year-old Imogen, made a fairytale flower girl, and baby Anika, aged one, was just starting to take her first footsteps.

Andrew, who was 35, seemed to have everything to live for. Not even close family had any idea how deep his depression went…

Delta Goodrem and Lauren Huxley reveal their special friendship over brunch in LA…

When Australia’s two favourite survivors Delta Goodrem and Lauren Huxley caught up for a girls’ day out in glamorous Los Angeles, their past troubles couldn’t have been further from their minds.

The emotional meeting between assault victim Lauren, 21, and cancer survivor Delta, who turns 24 this week, was a long time in the making.

“It’s taken a lot of organisation!” explains the chart-topping singer. “I’ve flown from Sydney and made a pit stop in LA just to spend the day with the girls. Then I head to New York tomorrow morning and get ready for a performance there.”

Lauren, who was joined by her elder sister Simone, 24, was thrilled to be healthy enough to spend the day shopping and chatting with her idol.

“Delta is the most beautiful person we have met,” she says. “We have been fans since she was 15 years old. We saw her in the local paper [in Sydney] when she started and we knew she was going to be a star…

Miranda’s family heartbreak: Her former love sent them broke

**By Phillip Koch

Supermodel Miranda Kerr appears to have it all, but behind her famous smile lies the torment caused by her ex-boyfriend.**

She is rich, famous and dating one of Hollywood’s hottest stars — but Miranda Kerr is still haunted by the heartache her parents suffered when they were forced to sell the family home because of her ex-boyfriend Adrian Camilleri’s failed business.

“We lost $850,000,” Miranda’s dad John tells Woman’s Day. “We were almost bankrupted. It’s caused a lot of heartache. We’re just trying to get on with our lives and put it behind us.”

John — who describes himself as a “lowly carpenter” — and wife Therese, from Gunnedah in north-west NSW, invested their life savings with Camilleri, 34, when he was dating Miranda.

They lost the lot when his five companies collapsed last year, owing $20million.

“We’re still hoping to get some of our money back but we don’t have any contact with him at all,” says John, who says Miranda was devastated by their huge losses…

Warwick Capper’s plastic surgery confession: ‘I love my new face’

By Jenny Brown

Pictures: David Hahn

Exclusive: The former AFL footy showman is 45 but reckons his new face makes him look 15 years younger.

Flamboyant Warwick Capper is on the phone to a female friend, and discussing her plans for breast implants.

“Don’t get the round ones. Get the teardrop shape, they’re better,” the former AFL pin-up of the 1980s earnestly advises. “They look more natural. Then get the DD. The round ones look like balloons. They’re c–p.”

This may seem strange, but in the crazy world of Warwick Capper, nothing is off-limits. Since retiring from top-level footy 17 years ago, he’s taken the field as a stripper, stand-up comedian, porn star, self-styled hit singer, movie actor, model, meter maid and stop-go man on a road repair crew.

Last year, the former Sydney Swans and Brisbane Bears star, as famous for his short shorts as his prowess on the field, even took an unsuccessful punt at becoming Gold Coast mayor!

Warwick, whose new scheme involves hiring himself out as a special guest at bucks nights, reckons he’s well abreast of cosmetic surgery, having just gone under the knife himself.

“It’s not a facelift, just a bit of a freshen-up,” he says, tossing his familiar thick blond mane. “I’m 45, but I reckon I could pass for 31, don’t you? I like it. I think it looks pretty natural.

“People say I’ve got so many tickets on myself, the concert’s sold out. But the jealous ones are ugly and fat and don’t look after themselves. My body’s a temple. No more porn, I’m reborn! They say I’m vain, but I’m not really. I just like looking at myself!”

Exclusive: Phil Ceberano’s death-defying wedding!

By Leigh Reinhold

Pictures: Andrew Jacob, Darren Leigh Roberts.

The muso’s spring nuptials were filled with drama before they even began…

Musician Phil Ceberano was never in any doubt that his self-confessed “control freak” bride would make it up the aisle right on time, so when the bridal party was more than half an hour late he started getting “pretty nervous”.

And when stunning Angela Crews finally appeared all poised and flawless in a divine beaded, ivory silk-satin gown her serene countenance betrayed no hint of the hair-raising white knuckle ride she’d been on in the last hours before she said “I do”.

Ever since she was a little girl Angela, who is now a national publicity manager for Sony BMG, had dreamt of leaving the family home in Sydney’s West Pennant Hills with all her bridal party in a white stretch Rolls-Royce.

But father-of-the-bride Terry Crews knew even before they left home there was something amiss with their transport.

“I could smell petrol when we got into the car,” says Terry, “and that set off some alarm bells. But I didn’t want to worry the girls.”

Along for the ride were Angela’s bridesmaids — her sister Maria Crews, and best friends Lucinda Rhys-Jones and Tyrilly Bolton — as well as matron-of-honour Kate Ceberano, soulful singer and sister of the groom.

“We were sitting at a set of lights at the top of this huge hill not far from our house when suddenly the engine conked out,” says Angela. “Then we realised there were no brakes and no hand brake, and the car was picking up speed, going backwards down the hill.”

Side-swiping one car and narrowly missing several others, the driver was swerving across both sides of the road, the vehicle careering out of control for three kilometres.

“We were going backwards at about 80kms an hour at one point,” says Angela. “It was terrifying.”

When they finally came to a stop at the bottom of the hill, it was Kate who leapt to the rescue, reveals Terry.

“Kate jumped out of the car and knocked on a random door and told this lady she had a bride who needed a drink. The lady recognised Kate, she was a fan — she actually had a look around for the candid camera! So we all piled into her house while we waited for alternative transport.”

Meanwhile, 109 family members and friends, including radio legend Alan Jones, TV gardener Jamie Durie and AFL footballer Russell Robertson, were oblivious to the drama. Waiting patiently on the lawns of Athol Hall in Mosman on Sydney Harbour, shaded by a white marquee decorated with fragrant roses, the guests only wondered what had happened to the usually punctual bride, who had planned the day and night’s festivities like a tour schedule for one of her headline acts.

“I was starting to get quite worried,” says Phil, 43, who was calmed down at the altar by his best man and tour manager Bruce Pawsey, and groomsmen Adrian Tisato, Thom Mann and Steve Hadley. “All we knew was their car had broken down. Ange didn’t want anyone knowing the full details or it could have ruined the day.”

But when Phil finally spied his four-year-old niece and flower girl Gypsy Rogers at the head of the bridal procession the nerves gave way to tears.

Blushingly beautiful beneath her flowing veil, Angela had waited 15 months since Phil proposed in a Paris restaurant for this moment and there was no time to dwell on her recent near-death experience or that she had arrived at her wedding in a Tarago van.

“I locked eyes with Phil and immediately I was calm — he has that effect on me,” says Angela, 26, who drew gasps from their guests, her Shane McConnell gown shimmering in the afternoon sun as she walked down the aisle to the strains of Eva Cassidy’s version of Songbird.

With marriage celebrant Glenda jollying things along, the couple exchanged vows with Angela promising Phil she would “learn to cook” before he placed two bands of diamonds around her 1.2 carat princess-cut diamond engagement ring, sealing the deal with a lingering kiss.

Spontaneous applause and whistles rung out across the harbour while Kate sang My One True Love and the new Mr and Mrs Ceberano signed the official documents on a love pact they knew from the start was “just right”.

Meeting at music events and then courting via internet for the first few weeks of their romance, Phil, who was living in Melbourne and Ange, a Sydney girl, say they had a chance to discover each other before they actually went on a “candlelit” first date 18 months ago.

“We talked a lot about our ideals and the things we strive towards and our old-fashioned values. We want babies absolutely and family is really important,” says Phil, who fronts the band Trentwood and plays guitar with his sister’s band. “We are really loyal to each other. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey and the adventure along the way, and we really embrace that.”

Ange says she never thought she’d find her perfect man within the music.

“It is really hard to find the right partner when you work in the entertainment industry because it can be a bit crazy sometimes, so to find someone like Phil, a musician who is loyal and level-headed, was a rare find.”

“Phil is my soul mate. I blush saying that, but it’s true. We look up to each other and we’ve got this really great connection.”

In his wedding speech, Phil told family and friends, “I think I have spent my whole life living in the moment until I met Ange. But when you can see the future with someone, then that’s a whole different thing and that’s what I’ve got with this girl. A beautiful future!”

Ange and Phil got the party rolling doing the bridal waltz — taught to them by Kate’s Dancing With The Stars partner John Paul Collins — to Queen’s Best Friend. Then Kate took to the stage with singer/songwriter Gary Pinto to belt out Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together as guests quaffed Moet champagne.

And there was one more surprise before Ange and Phil left for their Thai island honeymoon. Making a late appearance was Ange’s friend and client Guy Sebastian who wowed the crowd with Michael Buble’s Everything and Carole King’s, You’ve Got A Friend.

And considering her lucky escape earlier in the day it’s fair to say Ange and her new hubby have got more than a friend… there also seems to be a guardian angel watching over them.
