David Letterman admits to affairs with female staff

Talk show host David Letterman has confessed to having sexual relations with a number of his female staff members.

The startling admission, delivered during a live show, comes after the 62-year-old’s colleague Robert Halderman was arrested in relation to the case.

Speaking on his own show, Letterman told viewers he’d been the victim of a $2 million extortion attempt and that the blackmailer had threatened to write a screenplay and book about the affairs.

Letterman, who’s been married for five years and has a young son, reported the threats to police. He then made the decision to go public about the case before the press got wind of it.

“Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would, especially for the women,” he said on the show.

“I feel like I need to protect these people. I need to certainly protect my family.”

Robert Halderman has since been charged with attempted first degree grand larceny and faces five to 15 years in jail if found guilty.

*MasterChef*’s George Calombaris

MasterChef judges George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan

If you loved MasterChef, then get ready for the new, exciting Celebrity MasterChef. We chatted to George Calombaris about all things food.

Do you remember the first time you cooked something and thought, “This is what I want to do”?

I have always been attached to my mother’s apron strings. I have been around food all my life. My mom and grandmother are great cooks and were the main inspirations for me to become a chef.

**What is your favourite recipe to eat and favourite to make?

** I love cooking in general. It’s the joy of creating something from nothing and being able to give it to someone to eat. Then seeing their emotion once they have eaten it and loved it. At home I cook the simple things like roast chicken and salads. For me at home its all about the comfort in food.

With Celebrity MasterChef about to launch, what can you tell us about it?

We it’s a bit like an entrée to tie you over before we get to Series 2 of Master Chef for the main course. It will be treated the same in terms of standard and we will not accept any crap food!

Do you have an early favourite?

HMMM. No I don’t have favorites but I am surprised at the level of skill, passion and commitment to food they have. They can cook!

**What should we expect?

** Expect new challenges, inspirational food and on the edge tv. Very exiting. Again tv that the whole family can watch together.

**Did you expect the first season of MasterChef to take off like it did?

** No, I am always scared when I open a new restaurant. But I guess at the end of the day when you have a commitment of cast and crew as well as a network of passionate people and lots of hard work things usually work.

**What was your favourite moment of the first season of MasterChef?

** When Julie won and her family came in to see her. “FOOD IS FAMILY, FAMILY IS LIFE, LIFE IS EVERYTHING.”

**What is your favourite type of wine? What do you recommend coming into summer?

** I love a rose coming into summer. Chilled with some simply cooked seafood. Yum !

Can you share the best cooking tip you’ve been given?

My Mum told me to, “Cook only from the heart or else not cook at all”

**Worst tasting meal you’ve made/disaster in the kitchen?

** Never cooked a disaster. But never believe a chef that tells you he has cooked the most perfect dish. Perfection is something my chefs and I strive for every day. We never get there but we sure do get close.

**What’s your food weakness?

** Ice Cream

**What are you most proud of?

** In my professional life I am proud of all my restaurants and being able to have customers wanting to book weeks in advance to come in. For me my customers are my reward as well as my staff at work and partners who believe in me.

**What makes you nervous?

** The thought of a bad dining experience and bad food. There is nothing worse in life than that.

**Who do you think is a master chef?

** It’s a figure of speech. I am a cook that became a chef. Master Chefs are anyone that can cook fresh food and do it with respect to the produce and the person they are giving it to.

Rice: the long and short of it

Getty Images

Getty Images

Rice is the staple food for roughly half the world’s population and it is eaten daily by more than 300 billion people. Like wheat and other grains, rice is a good source of carbohydrate, which supplies the body with energy.

It is low in fat (less than 3g of fat per 100g uncooked rice) and is gluten-free, making it suitable for people with coeliac disease. There are many different types, but brown rice is especially nutritious because it’s a good source of fibre.

Tips for cooking and storing rice

One cup (200g) of uncooked rice will give you three cups of cooked white rice, or two cups of cooked brown or wild rice. Place any leftover hot, cooked rice in the fridge to cool and make sure it is covered. It can be stored for up to two days in the refrigerator. Leftover cooked rice which has been securely wrapped can be stored in the freezer for up to one month.

Types of rice

  • Short-grain white rice can be served with a range of spicy, sweet or savoury dishes. It has a creamy texture when cooked, making it ideal for desserts. Koshihikari is a Japanese short-grain rice that is often used in traditional dishes such as sushi, rice balls and nori rolls.

  • Long-grain white rice is an all-purpose rice with a firm fluffy texture that separates well when cooked. It is suitable to use in fried rice, stir-fries, curries and rice salads.

  • Brown rice has the outer layer of bran intact, which contributes to its nutty flavour and coarse chewy texture. You can buy both long- and short-grain forms and, while it does take longer to cook than white rice, it offers a higher nutritional content. Also look out for “quick cook” brown rice in supermarkets.

  • Jasmine rice is a fragrant long-grain white rice which is often served with Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine.

  • Basmati rice is an aromatic long-grain white rice which produces dry, separate grains once cooked. It is good for Middle Eastern and Indian dishes. This type of rice also has a lower glycemic index (GI) value than other types, which may be useful for people with diabetes.

  • Wild rice is not actually rice but the seed of a tall grass that grows in similar wet conditions to rice. It has brown to black grains with a chewy texture and a nutty flavour. It is often mixed with other kinds of rice and served in salads or soups.

  • Arborio rice is an Italian short- to medium-grain white rice which is commonly used in risotto dishes and has a pearly sheen.

Jen’s new man & baby plans

As her ex hits rock bottom, Jen finally finds happiness. Matthew Denby reports on her new love.

After a string of failed romances with Hollywood hunks, it seems that Jennifer Aniston has finally got the message. She’s now dating a regular guy, and even has a back-up plan for babies. For the first time she talks on the record about making her dreams of motherhood come true through artificial insemination.

After tiring of the reported womanising of her rumoured love interest, Gerard Butler, Jen is now seeing her first non-celebrity guy since her break-up with Brad Pitt — film producer Scott Stuber.

The star seems ready to break the pattern that has left her broken-hearted since her divorce. When asked on US TV show Access Hollywood last week about her upcoming film, The Baster — about a woman who impregnates herself using a turkey baster — Jen admitted that artificial insemination could be an option for her.

“I’m ready for anything … bring it on!” she responded. “But it would not be my first choice.”

And it seems that she’s not all talk. According to US magazine Life & Style, she has been seeing Dr Mary C. Kerr, one of LA’s top reproductive specialists, along with an endocrinologist, to make sure she’s ready to fall pregnant.

“She talks about her biological clock frequently,” a friend of the actress told the magazine. “She’s nervous she’ll have to wait too long.”

But Jen hopes she won’t have to resort to the lab to make her baby plans a reality.

“Jen and Scott have known each other for years,” confirms a movie industry source close to the couple. “They have a great working relationship and now that’s blossoming into romance.”

Ange pushes Brad to the brink

With his health faltering, Brad takes a stand against the lifestyle he fears could destroy him, report Matthew Denby and Josephine Agostino.

The tired, greying figure who arrived at the San Sebastian film festival in Spain last week has left fans and friends alike wondering what has happened to the real Brad Pitt. And it’s a question even he is now asking — with the star desperate to win back the life he has lost since hooking up with Angelina Jolie less than four years ago.

With his scruffy grey beard, puffy eyes and sallow skin, the actor who was once voted the “Sexiest Man in the World” appears to have aged more than a decade since he left wife Jennifer Aniston in 2005 to be with Angelina.

Endless sleepless nights spent tending to the couple’s six young children, Maddox, 8, Pax, 5, Zahara, 4, Shiloh, 3, and 14-month-old twins Knox and Vivienne, as well as a string of bitter rows with Ange and constant travelling to keep up with her gypsy lifestyle, have all conspired to age him dramatically. “The kids are keeping me up,” Brad recently complained. “They’re a handful.

“They give me so little sleep that I’m trying to get some wherever I can — on a plane, in traffic, wherever.”

With the couple this month finally taking a rest at their property in France, Brad had been desperately hoping for an extended breather — not only for the children but for himself.

However, France was not to be the emotional time-out Brad was hoping for, with Angelina reportedly taking herself off the contraceptive pill and laying on the pressure for a seventh child.

But after months of holding his tongue out of concern for his family, Brad snapped. Angrily telling Ange that she was killing him, Brad put his foot down.

Rosleigh’s plea: I will swap with Schapelle

Five years after Schapelle Corby was sent to jail, her anguished mum tells Glen Williams she wants to take her mentally disturbed daughter’s place.

A mother’s love knows no bounds, and Schapelle Corby’s mum, Rosleigh Rose, is no exception. As Schapelle sinks further into a quagmire of depression behind the bars of Indonesia’s Kerobokan Prison, Rosleigh has made a heartfelt plea to serve the rest of her daughter’s 20-year sentence for her.

“My daughter is innocent, I’m an innocent person too, so why shouldn’t I be able to take her place for a crime she never committed? I have asked the Indonesian and Australian authorities if I could take Schapelle’s place, because she is sick and I’m healthy and I’m strong,” Rosleigh tells Woman’s Day.

“Schapelle’s health, her mental health, is not getting any better, and it will not improve until I have my arms around her and I can nurture her back to new.”

It has been five years since Schapelle was arrested for smuggling 4.2 kilograms of cannabis into Bali, in her boogie board bag. Despite maintaining her innocence, Schapelle, now 32, has no further legal avenues at her disposal and is not expected to be released until, at the earliest, April 12, 2024.

Esteemed psychiatrist Dr Jonathan Phillips says Schapelle is “only hanging on by a thread”. That thread, claims Rosleigh, is becoming increasingly fragile as her daughter is being denied the correct care to keep her mentally balanced.

“Schapelle hasn’t been sane for a long time. We’re trying to get her medication stabilised and Schapelle stabilised, so she can monitor it and give it to herself,” she says.

“Some days she doesn’t take her medication at all, or her paranoia is such she thinks people are trying to poison her and she refuses to take her tablets. Other days she is given medication belonging to someone else.”

Wayne Carey: He proposed, then he cheated

Police were called recently when Wayne Carey’s now ex-fiancée Kate Neilson flew into a jealous rage outside the home the couple shared. She tells Ray Chesterton her side of the story.

It should have been the happiest time of her life, but Kate Neilson’s engagement to Wayne Carey was destroyed when he committed the ultimate betrayal — apparently cheating on her just days after popping the question.

After a turbulent four-year relationship, it seemed the disgraced former AFL star was ready to settle down and change his wild ways when he surprised Kate with a stunning proposal last month.

Interrupting the model during a family dinner, Carey produced a bouquet of orchids and presented Kate with a choice of two elaborate engagement rings before begging her to spend the rest of her life by his side.

Swept off her feet, a besotted Kate readily accepted the unexpected proposal and rushed into the arms of her new fiancé. The romance, however, was short-lived.

Concerned by Carey’s drinking and erratic behaviour following their engagement, Kate cut short a Melbourne business trip earlier this month to check on her beau, and found she had been locked out of the $3m mansion they shared on the Gold Coast — the home which she had helped to plan and decorate.

“When I got to the house at about 7am, my remote control wouldn’t work on the garage and I thought that was suspicious,” Kate says. “And when I went round to the front of the house, my key to the door didn’t work. The locks had been changed.

“The whole house had been shut up, including closing out the view with the shutters. We never closed them. I rang the bell and the phone, but Wayne wouldn’t answer.”

But it was not until Kate scaled the property’s fence and found another woman’s clothes in the back of her car, which was hidden behind the gates, that her worst fears were confirmed.

Bob Irwin declares: I’m in charge now

The rift between Bob Irwin and his daughter-in-law is growing. Now Bob is fighting to save his son Steve’s conservation legacy.

While he was content to toil in the shadow of his famous son, the patriarch of the Irwin clan, Bob, apparently reserves no such favours for the current management at Australia Zoo — and he’s determined to wrest the spotlight from them in a bid to control Steve’s conservation legacy.

So displeased is he with some of the zoo’s commercial ventures since his son’s death in 2006, the softly spoken environmentalist has declared his intention to personally take on the fight to save our endangered species, insisting that it is his duty to continue Steve’s work.

“Steve is the reason I came out of the bush,” Bob told ABC radio last week in Canberra, where he met with politicians to discuss the wildlife crisis. “While Steve was around I was more than happy to stay in the background. But I feel that I’m now responsible and I don’t want to waste that opportunity.”

Bob also warned that “the wrong people” had been advising the Government on how to ensure the survival of koalas in Queensland, and that the species was in danger of disappearing in just two years.

“Over the next couple of years, if the Government doesn’t get their act together and listen to the researchers, our kids are not going to see koalas in Queensland,” he said. Bob’s comments come amid a long-standing feud between Bob and Australia Zoo over how best to continue Steve’s work protecting endangered species. He is reportedly unhappy about the surge in activities seemingly unrelated to conservation at the iconic institution.

“Bob is angry that the zoo is being turned into a circus and the focus on animal conservation and education is being lost,” one source told a Queensland paper.

‘I’m not breaking up their marriage’

She’s been snapped sightseeing, dancing and dining out with Blue Wiggle Anthony Field, but dancer Caterina Mete tells Jonica Bray…’I’m not breaking up their marriage’.

Blue Wiggle Anthony Field recently made an extraordinary public defence of his six-year marriage. Now Woman’s Day can exclusively reveal the reason the normally reticent Anthony decided to talk out. As these photographs show, the father of three has become close friends with Caterina Mete, 28 … but maintains their friendship is innocent.

The petite dancer, who Anthony affectionately refers to as “Kitty Cat” or just “Kitty”, also spoke out recently, telling Woman’s Day, “I’m not breaking up their marriage.”

And Anthony, who travels with the Wiggles up to eight months a year, says it’s hard to be away from his wife, Miki, for so long and would like her and the kids to join him on tour.

Despite this, Wiggles insiders have revealed that Anthony, 46, has openly spoken about how close he and Caterina have become as friends.

“I don’t know what to do,” they report him saying. “I love Miki and I love my kids, but Kitty Cat is my soul mate.”

During the Wiggles’ recent US tour, Anthony and Caterina spent much of their spare time together. Between long-haul bus trips across the country, they went on a day trip to Elvis’s Graceland in Memphis, had breakfast in Little Rock, Arkansas, and enjoyed a Mexican dinner date in Chicago. They were also snapped together on a visit to Gold’s Gym and again while window shopping.v Anthony was often seen picking up the tab for Caterina, according to a tour insider, and the two frequently travelled on the same Wiggles bus, of which there were three.

Caterina remained by his side until the Wiggles tour ended a few weeks ago — the pair sat together in business class on their Qantas flight home, while the rest of the dancers travelled economy.

Kirk Pengilly’s recipe for love

The INXS star has left his wild days behind, swapping his guitar for an apron and chopping board.

After seven years of cooking for his fiancée, surfing champ Layne Beachley, Kirk Pengilly is finally getting the recipe right.

As the INXS rocker begins a stint competing on the highly anticipated Celebrity MasterChef, the happy couple reveal their secret ingredients for a good relationship, and sharing the household chores is at the top of the list.

“I do most of the cooking and most of the washing,” Kirk says. “I’m a keeper!”

Doing laundry duty is a far cry from Kirk’s former life as a rock ‘n’ roll superstar, but since meeting Layne, he’s happy to settle down and be a house husband.

“She’s really flat out with all sorts of things,” Kirk says. “So it’s cool — I’ll just stay at home and cook.”

Kirk and Layne announced their engagement in November last year, but since then they have struggled to seta date for the nuptials.

“We do discuss it,” Kirk says. “We’ve got an idea of where we want to do it and now we have to really nut out whether it’s going to be big or small. We’re both so busy, so it’s really hard to even plan that far ahead.”

But while the couple are waiting to wed, Kirk is happy to look after Layne, cooking up feasts that conform to her list of banned foods, which includes red meat, dairy products, wheat, gluten and pasta.

Despite the limitations of Layne’s diet, Kirk still cooks up a storm. “I make a lot of stir-fries,” he says, instead of the curries he used to love.
