Vanessa Amorosi: I’m over the moon

As Vanessa Amorosi celebrates her new chart-topping single, she talks to Lucie Morris-Marr about her dark struggle for self-esteem.

They are strong statements, but Vanessa Amorosi says it’s time to speak the truth. In a candid show of openness, the singer has revealed the personal misery which came as the direct result of being catapulted to fame as a teenager.

She may have wowed the world at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics with her incredible vocal ability, and sold 1.6 million albums, but she says growing up in the public eye left her constantly doubting herself and her looks.

Speaking of the raw lyrics in her current hit song, which make clear how she spent years “hating” herself, Vanessa tells Woman’s Day it’s only now, aged 28, she has the confidence to talk about her darker moments.

“When you are a kid, people want you to grow up so soon. I had to grow up real quick, but unfortunately my brain was still a child – and that is what created most of my strife I think.”

But Vanessa says writing her current number one song, defiantly titled This Is Who I Am, helped her express the sadness she kept hidden for so many years. Lines in the powerful Pink-style song include, “I spent years hating me, longing to be friends”, and “I don’t care if I’m fat”.

Vanessa was set on the path to stardom by former managers Mark Holden and Jack Strom, signing a recording contract at just 16, and she says those lyrics describe the “difficult times” she had coping with life in the sometimes harsh spotlight…

Marry me Toby!

Since Australian Idol contestant Toby Moulton told Woman’s Day about his search for love, we’ve been flooded with letters from women who believe they are perfect for the sexy school teacher.

Jackie Brygel meets some of the women who want to win his heart.

Dared by her sister and a close friend to write to Toby, Emily Bruce, from Newcastle, says she found our interview with the singer to be “quite comforting”.

“Like Toby, I’m a 30-year-old school teacher who’s been accused of being ‘too picky’,” she says. “I dream of having a family of my own and sharing this with my soul mate.”

Convinced Toby is a genuine guy, Emily wants the singer to know there’s “nothing wrong with waiting for the right one”.

A single mother of two, Brisbane hotel manager Tammy Falso believes she and Toby have much in common.

“Like Toby, I want to make sure the person I meet is right,” Tammy, 29, says. “But if I had a dollar for every time someone said, ‘Why are you still single?’, I’d be a millionaire by now!”

And Tammy laughingly reveals her daughters have also given Toby their blessing. “We watch him every week on Idol and I’ve always said ‘I’m going to marry him, girls!'”

Single for two years, 37-year-old mum Teresa Lane confesses she would love to find love again.

“I think we all deserve to have someone special in our life,” she reflects. “It’s not fair that we’re on our own.”

Based in South Australia, where she works as a medical receptionist, Teresa has been won over by what she calls Toby’s “generosity”.

“When he sings, it’s from the heart – and that’s exactly what he’s about,” she says.

Jihanne Azemothe, 23, who works in real estate in Victoria, was instantly drawn to Toby.

“He has that shyness about him,” she says. “Because I’m very outgoing, I feel it’s good to have that balance.”

Single for six months, after coming out of a relationship, Jihanne says she’s ready to give love “another go”.

Star’s dad tells: Why I’ll never see Heath’s last film

Heath Ledger fans will be queuing this week to catch a last glimpse of the Aussie actor in his final film, The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus – but his family want nothing to do with it.

Amid controversy over the way the movie was completed without its main star – who passed away during a break in filming on January 22 last year – Heath’s dad, Kim, says he can’t bear to see his son’s swansong.

“We haven’t been able to watch any films, let alone Heath movies,” Kim revealed in an exclusive chat with Woman’s Day’s The Lowdown. “And it’s for this reason we find ourselves uninterested in The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus.”

The $45 million movie, directed by Terry Gilliam, was thrown into disarray when the Perth-born actor died after overdosing on a mixture of prescription drugs.

“We’ve been sitting on the fence for so long, wondering how interested we’re going to be in this film,” admits Kim, who publicly got behind Heath’s last completed movie, The Dark Knight – attending the premiere in New York and accepting his son’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role. “[But] we’re just not that interested.

“There are too many shots of Heath unmasked, and with this year being so hard for us all, none of us really wants to see it.”

Tracey Wickham: My daughter’s death still haunts me

Two years after her teenage daughter succumbed to cancer, the former swim star tells Julie Hayne why she is still tormented by unanswered questions.

The tragic death of her teenage daughter from cancer still haunts swimming legend Tracey Wickham. It has turned her into a recluse, barely able to leave her house.

The free spirit who brought Australia gold medal glory in the pool from 1978 to 1982 was so devastated by the loss of Hannah two years ago that she put her whole life on hold.

Only now is she able to face the world again, and rebuild a relationship with her daughter’s widower, Tom O’Driscoll.

“I spent the first 12 months just shutting myself off from the world,” Tracey reveals. “I’d take the phone off the hook and close the curtains.

“Going grocery shopping to put some food in the fridge was an effort, because I just wanted to sit at home in my PJs, shut the house up, and make the world go away. I couldn’t deal with anything and, as anyone who has lost a child would know, you can go to some very dark places.”

Before her death from synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that attacks muscles, fat and fibrous tissue, 19-year-old Hannah married Tom in an emotional bedside ceremony. Three hours later, she died.

Tracey, known for her courage and discipline as a swimmer, says she simply had no way of controlling the heartbreak she has felt since Hannah’s death.

“People often say to me, ‘It’s been almost two years now. It’s time to move on,” she says, shaking her head sadly. “Or they say things like, ‘I lost my great aunt last year, so I know how you’re feeling.’

“I feel like screaming when people say things like that, because no-one understands how it feels unless they, too, have lost a child,” explains Tracey, who admitted herself to hospital seeking treatment for depression six months after Hannah’s death.

Memories of wonderful times dance through Tracey’s head along with sad reminders.

“Mother’s Day, birthdays – hers and mine – Christmas, the thought of being cheated out of watching my daughter’s children grow up … how are you supposed to just ‘move on’ when it still hurts so much?”

Healthy choices when eating away from home

Getty Images

Getty Images

With longer working hours, increasingly busy lives and plenty of “eating out” options it’s no wonder we are eating out more often. At times it can seem difficult to make healthy choices when you eat away from home, particularly when you are trying to reduce your weight.

When deciding on what sandwich to have, it is always good to start with wholegrain bread. By replacing the margarine or butter with hummus or avocado spread you will not only add an extra flavour hit, but you are choosing a much healthier option.

To finish off, choose lean meats, such as chicken or tuna and bulk up your sandwich with your favourite salad or char-grilled vegetables. Other ideas for readily available healthy takeaways include a tub of fresh fruit salad and/or yoghurt, sushi or a jacket potato filled with salad or vegetables and a small amount of cheese (skip the sour cream).

Restaurant meals can also be both healthy and delicious — it’s just a matter of choosing the right filling, cooking method, side sauce or drink.

Here are some tips to help you on your way to choosing a healthier meal when you are next dining out:

  • Choose an entree-sized meal for your main course, served with a side salad.

  • Choose dishes that are steamed, grilled, stir-fried or baked. Avoid fried and battered dishes.

  • Select dishes based on rice, pasta or noodles with tomato-based sauces and plenty of vegetables.

  • Avoid dishes served with creamy sauces, or ask for the sauce on the side so you can limit the amount.

  • Order salads with vinegar-based dressings or request that the dressing be served on the side, so you can limit the amount.

  • Skip the butter on your dinner roll or vegetables.

  • Fresh fruit is great for dessert or why not try fruit sorbet instead of ice-cream.

  • Ask for iced or mineral water in preference to soft drinks and if you drink alcohol, limit your intake.

Hopefully you can see that with a little thought there are many healthy choices to choose from when you are out and about! For more health choices check out Sanitarium’s fact sheet.

The 30-year-old mum confessed young Suri and husband Tom Cruise are quick to offer their advice when she is choosing an outfit.

Vanessa Amorosi hits Kylie status

Vanessa Amorosi

It seems some Aussie artists are going unnoticed when it comes to success in the top of the Aria charts, but this is not the case for Victorian star Vanessa Amorosi.

Her latest pop-rock single ‘This Is Who I Am’ has skyrocketed, debuting at number one on the Aria singles chart this week and it’s not hard to see why.

Vanessa, recently back from working on her new album in Sweden, is stronger than ever and, with her powerful vocals and a fierce attitude, is more than capable of belting out a tune.

Vanessa is the first Australian artist to claim the chart’s top spot since Kylie Minogue’s hit ‘Two Hearts’ debuted at number one in 2007.

“I was completely overwhelmed when I heard ‘This Is Who I Am’ came in at number one,” the Melbourne-based singer said.

“I am so excited and thrilled to have the support from both the media and my fans. It is my first number-one single and I will absolutely treasure this moment.”

Vanessa shot to fame in 1999, when she was just 18 years old, with the release of her debut album The Power, which included her hit ‘Absolutely Everybody’. This single went on to become the longest-charting Australian single by an Australian female artist.

Her new single is the first from her new album Hazardous, to be released on November 6, 2009. If you want to see more of the Aussie singer, she will be touring with Rob Thomas throughout Australia during February next year.
