I went into a coma and woke up a mum!

Danielle Nickoll had no idea she was even pregnant until moments before she was put into a coma for severe swine flu. The Sydney mum tells Katherine Chatfield how she awoke to the biggest, and happiest, shock of her life.

Danielle Nickoll kisses her daughter Sienna and laughs as the 12-week-old shows a gummy smile back. Danielle clearly dotes on her baby, but she’s had a tough introduction to becoming a mum.

Amazingly, the 21-year-old from Ryde, in Sydney’s north-west, didn’t know she was expecting until she went to hospital after finding it hard to breathe. Doctors diagnosed her with swine flu – and told her she was 33 weeks pregnant.

Moments later, she fell into a coma, and Sienna was born by caesarean while her mum was still unconscious.

“If doctors hadn’t got her out, we both would have died,” says Danielle. “It’s amazing we’re both here and healthy.”

Being told she was expecting came as a shock to Danielle, because her GP had previously told her she wasn’t pregnant.

“I’d been to the doctor because I was worried my periods had stopped,” she says. “She told me it was because I was overweight. I started to go to the gym five days a week and she gave me diet pills, too. I didn’t look pregnant, so I accepted what she’d told me.”

Then, in July, Danielle started to feel ill. “I thought it was just a bad cold,” she says. “But I was having difficulty breathing and walking, so my sister took me to hospital.”

Doctors soon realised how ill Danielle was, and quarantined her. Swine flu tests came back positive – and so did a pregnancy test.

“I was shocked, but felt so ill I didn’t really know how to react,” she says. “I was very worried because I’d been taking diet pills, as well as cold and flu medication, for weeks, which could have harmed the baby.”

Danielle’s boyfriend Curtis, 26, couldn’t believe it when his girlfriend of three years told him she was pregnant.

“We’d always wanted kids, but we were planning on waiting a while!” he says.

Trishna and Krishna: Back to the orphanage

Newly separated conjoined twins Trishna and Krishna have captured the hearts of Australians with their cheeky smiles and fighting spirit as they recover from their landmark surgery – but their biggest fight is still to come.

Without the legal documentation to stay in Australia, the girls’ ultimate fate remains uncertain and, with the birth parents signing away all rights, the twins could find themselves back in the orphanage from which they were rescued.

Brought to this country by Moira Kelly, Executive Director of the Children’s First Foundation (CFF), which provides a safe haven for children of all races, the twins’ official guardian is still the Missionaries of Charity Orphanage in Bangladesh.

After surviving a 32-hour operation at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, in which their fused heads were separated, the twins amazed medical experts with the speed of their recuperation, watching Wiggles videos and chatting just days after they regained consciousness.

The brave girls will celebrate both their third birthday, on December 22, and Christmas in hospital, but they can only remain in the country while their health care continues, as they were brought to Australia on Medical Treatment Visas.

In preparation for their return home, the twins are being tutored in their national language and culture by a Bangladeshi nanny – even though their birth mother wants them to remain in Australia.

Although desperate to be reunited with her children, Lovely Golder wants them to stay in a country she knows will provide them with a better future – and hopes the woman she calls “a god” is able to keep them.

Lisa and Grant’s split gets nasty

The former sporting champs are battling over who gets the kids for Christmas.

Still reeling from her marriage breakdown, Lisa Curry is facing even more stress with the approach of Christmas. Like many other single parents around Australia, the former swimming star is nervously preparing to negotiate the pitfalls of the festive season.

Just who gets the children on Christmas morning is a familiar tussle for many split families and, despite their celebrity, it will be the same this year for Lisa and her estranged husband Grant, who have three children together from their 23-year union.

Friends say Lisa, 47 – who has been seen shopping for gifts along Mooloolaba’s string of beachside boutiques – fears she will find herself alone on Christmas Day, thanks to a feud with the Kenny family.

Since her split with Grant in May, Lisa has found herself increasingly isolated from her in-laws, Hayden and Fae Kenny. Sources close to the family say that although Grant’s parents were once supportive of their daughter-in-law and tried to remain neutral in the wake of the shock split, they disapproved of her romance with “love-rat” businessman Adrian Hunter.

“It was the the public displays of affection on Mooloolaba Beach that finally chilled the relationship,” says a local. “The Kennys thought it was so tacky, and were worried about the repercussions for their son and their grandchildren, as well as themselves.

Lisa might be a famous name in Australia, but her father-in-law, Hayden, is Sunshine Coast royalty, and has a reputation to uphold. He and his wife were furious to be embarrassed like that.”

The simmering tensions came to a head several weeks ago at a surf club gathering, with Lisa leaving abruptly, visibly upset at a less than effusive greeting from her father-in-law.

How to make a capital guarantee product 101

What is a capital guarantee product? And other things you need to know.
cash in padlock, Getty Images

TO answer the first question, a capital guarantee product, put simply, is an investment where you are promised that you will not lose the money you put into that product.

Let’s take the example of property. There are those who believe property will always go up, and there are others who are worried that with all the ups and downs maybe their investment property might be down when they go to sell it and they will lose money.

So property investors might want to know that their property is capital guaranteed for a specific time period, 10 years for example.

The usual way this is currently done is instead of buying property directly, an investor buys into a property trust that is capital guaranteed. The guarantee costs roughly 3 percent of the investment and the investor has no control over the property trust.

Given the perceived complexity of this type of investment, I asked private wealth manger David Darmali, financial planner from Invest Partner how he constructs a capital guarantee and he provided an example of how he might do this for his clients.

“Say for example* they had $1 million. They spend $600,000 on a bank bond that guarantees to pay them $1 million in 10 years time. With the other $400,000, they put down a deposit on a commercial property that has an 8 percent return,” Darmali said.

“The commercial interest rate is currently around 7 per cent and the commercial property value grows by 2 to 3 per cent per year, in line with rental increases with inflation (as commercial properties are valued according to the rent and rental contracts are usually indexed to CPI),” he said.

“Over 10 years, that would be at least a 10 per cent increase in capital gain and assuming the tenant is secure, with a positive cash flow from day one. Their capital is also guaranteed by the bank bond.”

*These figures are for educational purposes only, not current actual figures.

How do I cook with fresh ginger

Fresh ginger

Question: I am not sure how to use fresh ginger in cooking. Should I peel it before using?

Ginger is a plant from tropical and subtropical regions. It is grown for its root, which is the part you buy in the shop.

Much of the flavour of ginger is just under the skin, so if you an avoid peeling it before using then that is better. The best way to do so is to scrape the skin with a teaspoon rather than using a vegetable peeler (however, you may find using a peeler is easier).

Ginger can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes and goes well with a number of other flavours. It is fantastic with white fish, in Asian recipes and stir-fries, as well as steeped in boiling water to make a soothing tea.

Thinly scrape off the outer skin then grate, or cut into matchstick-size pieces, for a more intense flavour. Only a little is required, usually a 2cm or 3cm piece, grated, is enough ginger for a recipe

Ground ginger, also known as powdered ginger, is used as a flavouring in cakes, pies and puddings but cannot be substituted for ginger.

Aussie girl marrys the real Percy from Harry Potter

An Aussie tells Sandra white how she fell under the spell of the man J.K. Rowling based her character on.

When Aussie woman Sarah Harris is asked how she met husband Chris, she tells you it was magic. After all, he’s one of the Weasleys – or, at least, the family which inspired the famous wizardry family in J.K. Rowling’s best-selling Harry Potter series.

While she didn’t know that then, superstitious Sarah, who was teaching in London when she met Chris in a lunch queue eight years ago, says she somehow felt she was destined to find her true love in the United Kingdom.

“I believe in the occult and something told me to go to England and I would meet a man,” Sarah tells Woman’s Day. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw this drop-dead gorgeous guy in the lunch line at the school we both taught at.

“It was love at first sight – it was like electricity,” she says.

“I was captivated by his magic. I truly believe he cast a spell on me, and we were engaged within six weeks.”

But it wasn’t until several years later that Sarah learnt J.K. Rowling was a family friend and had put the Harris clan into her books.

“My in-laws are Mr and Mrs Weasley,” she laughs. “My brother-in-law, Sean, is Ron Weasley and my husband is Percy Weasley.

The Weasley twins are my brother-in-law Matthew, and Ginny Weasley is my sister-in-law Anne Marie.”

While J.K. Rowling has confirmed many times that the Weasleys are based on the Harris clan, none of them have ever spoken about how they became the famous fiction family … until now.
