Canberra’s art coup: 112 post-impressionist masterpieces shown

Seven van Goghs in Canberra was once the stuff of dreams at the National Gallery of Australia until its director pulled off an incredible coup that brought 112 masterpieces to the gallery.
Vincent van Gogh: Starry night, 1888

Along with the van Goghs, including The Starry Night, came paintings by Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, Pierre Bonnard, Claude Monet, Maurice Denis, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Edouard Vuillard, among many others, courtesy of the Musée D’Orsay, Paris, that has closed for a refit.

Unpacking a van Gogh is a breathtaking experience, says Adam Worrall, assistant director at the NGA. “We all gasped when we opened the crate with Starry Night. The colours are startling.”

So valuable are the paintings in the exhibition that the federal government had to indemnify them – insurance was impossible – and eight separate planes were used to transport the collection in case of an accident.

Not only are these paintings sublimely beautiful, but they “represent the turning point between Impressionism and all modern art that followed”, says joint exhibition curator Lucina Ward.

Save yourself the $2000-plus airfare to Paris and pay a visit to Canberra instead. Entry is $25. Buy a catalogue and compare the experience of seeing the real paintings and their reproductions. There’s simply no comparison.

Feet first

New York-based celebrity nail artist Jin Soon shares her essential guide for an easy at-home pedicure. Your feet will be sandal-ready in no time, writes Shonagh Walker.

In pictures: The perfect pedi

Step 1: Smooth and shape

Wash your feet using a mild soap-free cleanser with anti-bacterial properties, then remove all traces of old nail enamel. Now, clip and shape the nails. “Summer’s best shape is rounded-square,” says Jin, who has tended to the talons of Sheryl Crow, Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyonce, Hilary Swank and Madonna. “This is the most natural shape. Keep the nail straight on the sides, with somewhat rounded corners and a slightly convex-free edge.” Use a fine-grain nail file and work in a gentle back-and-forth motion from corner to corner.

Try:

  • A’Kin Eucalyptus & Tea Tree Hand Wash, $13.50.

  • Manicare Toenail Clippers, $7.65.

  • Manicare Limited Edition Fashion Nail Shapers, $1.95 each.

Step 2: Soak and soften

Get to work on rough skin and calluses. Soak feet for a few minutes in warm water with hand wash from step one. The cuticles and skin will then be soft enough to treat.

“Push back the cuticles,” says Jin. “Don’t cut them. The primary purpose of the cuticle is to protect your nails. If you push them back thoroughly, you should not have to cut them.”

After soaking, perform a callus treatment, says Jin. Begin by scrubbing feet with a soothing scrub. Massage into feet, concentrating on particularly dry areas. Rinse, and then get to work with your pumice, sloughing until skin feels less rough. Dry your feet and take a few minutes to massage a hydrating, cooling moisturising cream all the way from your toes to your knees.

Try:

  • Essie The Cuticle Pen, $29.95.

  • Botani Detox Foot Scrub, $14.95.

  • Avon Footworks Pumice Stone and Brush, $9.

  • Endota Spa Foot Cream Mint and Desert Lime, $45.

Step 3: Colour and care

Wipe the nail clean from oil and moisturiser with a cotton pad soaked in nail-polish remover. After separating the toes to prevent smudges, apply the nail lacquer. “Apply the base coat first,” says Jin. This protects the nail from yellowing and becoming dry, as it allows the polish to adhere to something other than your nail.

“Two layers of colour are essential,” says Jin, “to get the true depth of your polish.” Choose a beautiful summer hue and apply one single stripe of colour down the centre of the nail, then along either side, repeating until the nail has a smooth finish of polish. Allow a few minutes between each coat for drying time.

“Finish with the top coat,” advises Jin. It adds megawatt shine and protects the polish against chipping. Your pedicure should last one to two weeks. To make it last longer, slick on a coat of clear top coat every day to enhance shine and prevent chipping.

Try:

  • Mavala Pedi-Pads, $6.95.

  • OPI Start to Finish Base and Top Coat, $22.45.

  • Jin Soon for M.A.C Nail Lacquer in Dance all Night, $22.

  • Jin Soon for M.A.C Nail Lacquer in Rich, Dark, Delicious, $22.

  • Estee Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Burgundy, $36.

  • B Collection by Bloom Nail lacquer in Cancun, 14.95, from Target.

  • OPI Nail Lacquer Pink Flamenco, $19.95.

  • Eles Colour of Minerals Nail Enamel in Carousel Princess, $18.95.

  • Zoya Professional Lacquer in Renee, $17.

  • Bio Sculpture Nail Varnish in Sunset Shimmer, $17.95.

Uber-supermodel Cindy Crawford loves men lusting after her

Getty

Cindy Crawford, the 43-year-old supermodel and mum-of-two (eight-year-old Kaia and 10-year-old Presley), has admitted that she still likes the idea of men lusting after her, despite the fact she’s been happily married since 1998, and no longer modelling full-time.

In an interview with GQ, Cindy said she was worried about what the effects of pregnancy would do to her famous body but is now relieved that she has been labelled a “MILF” (mum I’d like to f—) by the media, because it’s evidence that men still find her attractive.

“I don’t want to be a cougar, I want to be a MILF! I hate that word ‘cougar’ and what it represents. MILF is a word I absolutely love!” Crawford told GQ.

“I like that tag because I think there is always a worry for all models that the moment you have kids, the perception of you is going to change.”

Cindy, with her trademark mole above her lip and stunning looks, was a world-renowned supermodel in the ’90s. She was featured on the cover of hundreds of magazines throughout her career and was ranked number three on VH1’s 40 Hottest Hotties of the ’90s.

Cindy admitted to Gala magazine back in 2006 that she regularly received certain cosmetic procedures, including Botox, collagen and vitamin injections, so it seems she takes her wish to be regarded as a MILF very seriously.

Susan Boyle: My dream year!

Since her stunning appearance on UK TV show Britain’s Got Talent in April, Susan Boyle has risen from obscurity to become one of the most famous women on the planet.

In a week that has seen her topping CD charts around the world with huge sales from her debut album I Dreamed A Dream, the fragile 48-year-old singer – who lives alone with her cat Pebbles and suffers from a learning disability after being deprived of oxygen during birth – has been subject to new concerns about her wellbeing.

Amid reports of bizarre behaviour, including claims she last week returned to her Scottish village with an American accent – we reveal, in her own words, Susan’s side of the story.

January 21, 2009: BGT Audition – I will never forget that day. A lot of people dream about being on television, about making records, about entertaining people. You chance your arm and see how far you can get.

But to be honest I never thought for a minute that I would get this far. The audition was at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow. I could see the place but I kept on taking the wrong bus. I must have changed buses about six times to get to the damn place.

I got there hours early and sat in the holding room watching everybody do their audition one by one. Everybody kept saying to me, “Are you sure you should be at this audition?”. I saw dance groups come and go, men with spoons, dogs. Eventually it was my turn, I got three yeses.

April 11, 2009: My big TV debut – The day my audition was aired on TV and the day my life changed forever. I was sitting at home watching the show alone.

I came onto the telly and I heard lots of shouting outside my window. When I opened the front door my neighbours were outside my house jumping for joy. We ended up having a bit of a street party. It was special.

May 2009: Becoming a star – The hype that went on I didn’t really get – strangers writing to me every day, everyone was really nice to me.

Blackburn became kind of manic. In some ways it was funny. The neighbourhood turned out to be a very good community. People I’d never spoken to in my life before would offer to do my shopping for me.

The Scud and Jen Happily ever after…for now!

Aussie tennis star and serial womaniser Mark Philippoussis insists he’s finally been tamed – by American actress Jennifer Esposito – with plans for a wedding mid next year.

And despite him infamously turning down the “cougar” in favour of the “kitten” on TV show Age of Love, as well as most of his exes being little beyond school age, Mark’s new fiancée is four years older than him.

Linked to a string of famous beauties, including Delta Goodrem and Paris Hilton, Scud now only has eyes for one woman, as our world exclusive first photos of the couple show. Snapped at an exclusive art exhibition in New York City, Mark,33, couldn’t resist the temptation to plant an impromptu kiss on his 37-year-old fiancée, to whom he proposed in October after a courtship of three months. “Mark is over the moon with excitement,” reveals a close friend of the couple.

“This was the first public outing Mark and Jennifer had made, and the 300 guests who attended the event were left in no doubt as to how much in love they are.”

Plans for the wedding are already taking shape, with the couple set to tie the knot next year in the northern summer.

The ceremony is likely to take place in the Hamptons, the playground of Manhattan’s rich and famous, where their love blossomed.

“They met in the Hamptons,” explains the friend. “But up until recently, Jennifer had been filming a telemovie in Los Angeles and Mark took that opportunity to continue his training for his planned tennis comeback.

Jen’s miscarriage heartache

Old wounds are reopened as Jen Aniston confronts the memory of the two babies she lost with Brad Pitt.

The tragic truth behind Jennifer Aniston’s split from ex-husband Brad Pitt has finally been revealed: she suffered two traumatic miscarriages during their marriage, and the emotional turmoil that followed tore the couple apart.

Celebrity biographer Ian Halperin has confirmed in his book, Brangelina Exposed, that Jen lost two babies, one in 2003, and the other in 2004, just months before the couple officially split.

The last poignant photographs of Brad and Jen – taken in January 2005 – show them walking arm in arm on a Caribbean beach, sadness etched on their faces. Just days later, they shocked the world by announcing they were separating.

At the time it was presumed they were simply mourning the end of their relationship, but Halperin’s shock revelations have cast a new light on the couple’s final months together.

“If a marriage is in trouble, a miscarriage can be the nail in the coffin,” says psychologist Sarah Calleja. “If a marriage is strong, it can help bond the couple over their shared grief.”

However, it seems their grief drove Brad into the arms of Angelina Jolie (above right), his co-star in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Angelina has since admitted she and Brad fell in love while filming the movie. Jennifer, on the other hand, has always kept a stoic silence on the trauma she went through as Brad and Angelina went public with their relationship, resisting the temptation to dismiss stories that she was career-obsessed and did not want to have a family.

Halperin’s book even claims the rumours about Jen were spread by Angelina to deflect criticism of her for stealing Brad.

“I’ve always wanted to have children,” Jen simply said after the split, as gossip swirled that she had refused him children in favour of movie roles. “I would never give up that experience for a career.”

Even Brad felt compelled to step forward and defend Jen, telling GQ magazine that any suggestion the relationship had ended over her refusal to have a baby was “bulls**t”.

Tiger’s double life

In the wake of mounting reports of infidelity, Tiger’s secret side is uncovered – and a new mistress’s claims of a shocking 31-month affair are revealed.

One day before news broke that Tiger Woods was allegedly involved in an affair with New York City club hostess Rachel Uchitel, he was already doing damage control – covering his tracks with an entirely different woman.

“Hey, it’s Tiger,” the golfing legend said in a November 24 voicemail to 24-year-old Jaimee Grubbs, the LA cocktail waitress he allegedly began an affair with in April 2007. “I need you to do me a huge favour. Can you please take your name off your phone? My wife went through my phone and may be calling you.

So if you can, please take your name off that. Just have it as a number on the voicemail … You got to do this for me, Huge. Quickly. Bye.”

Following a week of scandalous claims, vehement denials and a car crash that still has police scratching their heads, Jaimee has spoken exclusively about her alleged three-year affair with the world’s highest paid athlete and married father of two, 33.

“I loved how we got along,” Jaimee says of their relationship. “But knew, in the back of my mind, there could never be just us. There would always be a wife or someone else.”

Indeed, Jaimee and Rachel are only the latest in a string of women who have reportedly cavorted with Tiger since he married Swedish-born former nanny, Elin Nordegren, 29, in 2004. After years of cultivating an impeccable image as a billion-dollar success story, straight-arrow husband and dad to daughter Sam, 2, and son Charlie, 10 months, Tiger has seemingly joined a long line of fidelity-challenged sports icons.

And apparently his wife already knows.

Tiger speaks out

Getty

Following the world-wide reports of Tiger Woods having many mistresses, the world’s best golfer responded by leaving these comments on his website:

I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.

Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means. For the last week, my family and I have been hounded to expose intimate details of our personal lives. The stories in particular that physical violence played any role in the car accident were utterly false and malicious. Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.

But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy. I realize there are some who don’t share my view on that.

But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one’s own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn’t have to mean public confessions. Whatever regrets I have about letting my family down have been shared with and felt by us alone. I have given this a lot of reflection and thought and I believe that there is a point at which I must stick to that principle even though it’s difficult.

I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology.

Your say: What do you think of the Tiger Woods scandal? Should his wife forgive him?
