Stan Walker’s cancer shock

Stan Walker

The Australian Idol winner and his family have been plagued by a killer gene, but the young star refuses to let it get him down.

Behind Stan Walker’s infectious smile and sweeter-than-honey voice lurks a frightening and real cancer threat that would fill most people with a sense of terror and dread.

The Australian Idol winner, whose single, Black Box, has hit number one in New Zealand, is a member of an extended Bay of Plenty Maori family who for generations were plagued by aggressive and deadly hereditary stomach cancer.

Ground-breaking research by Otago University scientists, combined with detailed records kept by the family, identified a mutant cancer gene responsible for the deaths of about 25 family members over 30 years.

The discovery meant the entire family, including Stan, could be tested.

“We’ve got the gene. Me and mum,” reveals Stan, 19, whose parents both descend from members of the cancer-plagued family.

The talented singer has regular gastroscopy examinations to check for early signs of the disease.

“They thought I had cancer last year, because I was bleeding from inside, but it was nothing. I was in my gown and I was just about to go in [for tests] and they said, ‘It’s probably nothing but you might have cancer’.

I freaked out, I was like ‘I’m gonna die!’” Despite the obviously frightening moment, as Stan tells the story, he can’t help but laugh at how scared he was.

Big sister’s ultimate gift – “I saved my brother’s life”

When Isabella Taleski did water safety at school, she never guessed she’d soon get to use what she’d learnt. She tells Katherine Chatfield what happened.

Stefan Taleski shrieks with delight as he chases big sister Isabella across the park. As his screams dissolve into giggles, it’s hard to imagine that just a few weeks ago his life hung in the balance.

The bubbly four-year old nearly drowned in a friend’s swimming pool – and it’s all down to Isabella’s quick thinking and bravery that he’s here today.

As the siblings splashed around in a friend’s pool with about 20 other children, 12-year-old Isabella was the first to notice her brother was in trouble.

She screamed for help, and when he was pulled out of the water, she kept him in the recovery position until the ambulance came.

“Paramedics said that her quick actions saved Stefan’s life,” says proud mum Liliana. “It might have only taken us another minute to notice he was in trouble, but that minute could have meant the difference between him living or drowning.”

The near-fatal incident took place while the Taleskis were enjoying a barbecue at a friend’s house in Abbotsbury, in Sydney’s west, along with about 40 other people.

“There were adults in the pool watching the kids,” says Liliana. “I was looking out for [my other son] Jovan, who was doing cannon balls at the other end of the pool.”

But despite the watchful adults in and around the pool, somehow among the splashing children, music and fun, a struggling Stefan managed to go unnoticed – until Isabella spotted him in the nick of time.

“Stefan was playing in the shallow end,” Isabella says. “Some of the older kids were watching him, so I went inside to get something to eat. When I came back, I could see him in the water. He looked like he was sinking. He was bobbing up and down and his hands were splashing around and he was trying to dog paddle. His mouth and most of his nose were under water.”

Chloe’s Art Attack

Pro Hart’s teenage granddaughter has paint running through her veins, Julie Hayne reports.

She’s only 14, but Chloe Hart’s tender age hasn’t stopped her from hosting her first art exhibition – or deterred people from lining up to commission her paintings.

Her success, however, comes as no surprise to her family. After all, she is the third generation of Harts to make a splash in the art world. And David, her proud painter father, says the family patriarch, Pro, would be beaming had he lived to see her success.

“I know that if Dad were alive he would have absolutely loved the fact that his granddaughter has just had her first art exhibition,” David tells Woman’s Day.

“About a week before he passed away, I showed him a little painting of a beach scene Chloe had done and told him someone had just bought it for $700. He was so happy his granddaughter had picked up the desire to paint, and that his great love for the medium was flowing on down through the family.”

Known for his flamboyant style and eccentric outback lifestyle – as well as his famous “Oh Mr Hart, what a mess!” carpet ad of the ’80s – Pro was much-loved by Australians. After his death from motor neurone disease in 2006, the rest of the world recognised his talent and he was lauded as one of the nation’s great artists.

To granddaughter Chloe, though, he was always just Pop. And she has countless fond memories of the man she credits as instilling a love for art in her: “When I was little, Pop would take me out to his studio and give me these little square magnets and some paint so I could play around,” Chloe explains.

“He was a real practical joker, so one Christmas I bought him a remote control rat which he loved to drag out from time to time.”

Pink blasts ‘redneck’ royals over bearskin hats

Getty

Although a lengthy list of stars including Lady Gaga met Queen Elizabeth II recently at the Royal Variety Performance in Blackpool, don’t expect singer Pink to be next on the list.

The singer, who is not afraid to speak her mind, has come out swinging at the royal family and has labelled Prince William a “redneck” because he enjoys hunting.

The ‘Funhouse’ singer, who is an animal activist and works with PETA, has told Q magazine she wrote a letter of complaint to Prince William about his interest in hunting and the mistreatment of animals.

“I wrote to him to protest about foxhunting and I figured he would be this stuffy, privileged asshole,” Pink told the magazine.

“But he’s like a redneck from the south. If you’re brought up shooting and hunting animals, if you really think it’s second-nature and you’re blasting away, then it’s hard to see the other point of view. You need educating.”

This is not Pink’s first attempt to contact the royal family to share her views. She has also written to the queen to complain about guards at Buckingham Palace wearing bearskin hats.

She is yet to receive a response to her letters from the royal family and adds that she has planned for replacement hats to be made.

“To be truthful I was really surprised I didn’t get a reply to that one,” Pink said.

“I wasn’t just writing in and complaining, and it certainly was not a publicity stunt. I actually proposed a plan. Stella McCartney had designed these replacement hats for the guards, using fake fur. I felt we were solving the problem for her and offering a viable solution,” she said.

“But she never wrote back. Maybe she doesn’t have any of my stuff on her iPod.”

Is George Clooney connected to Jaimee Grubbs?

Getty

As the reported number of Tiger Woods’ mistresses continues to grow, the first woman to come clean about her affair with the golf star, Jaimee Grubbs, has revealed he wasn’t the only celebrity she has a connection with.

According to Us Weekly magazine, Jaimee had a relationship with notorious bachelor George Clooney just two months ago at the same time she was involved with the world’s best golfer.

While she declined to give any further details, Jaimee told the magazine “I know him”.

But George is strongly denying the claims, with his rep saying he has never even met Jaimee.

A source told the magazine that the pair had been seen publicly together, but at that point nobody knew who the 24-year-old cocktail waitress was and took no notice.

The source also claimed that Jaimee has text messages from George on her phone and that when he called “she came running”.

Meanwhile, George seems to be ignoring the claims and looks quite smitten with his new squeeze Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis, who he recently showed off on the red carpet of his new movie Up in the Air.

Breakfast … the most important meal of the day

Getty Images

Getty Images

Starting your day with a good breakfast is one of the best health decisions you can make. Breakfast literally means “breaking your overnight fast”. Remember it could be at least 10 hours since your last meal, so it is important to refuel your body ready for another day.

Enjoying breakfast can help lift your mood and has been shown to help with improving concentration levels, behaviour and learning abilities in schoolchildren.

Breakfast and weight control

Although many people skip breakfast in an effort to reduce their food intake and lose weight, research shows that enjoying a high-fibre breakfast, may lead to eating less food later in the day. This is probably because high-fibre meals can be quite filling, so you are less likely to snack on high-fat and sugary foods mid-morning. In fact, eating breakfast is strongly associated with successful, well-maintained weight loss.

What makes a good breakfast?

It is important to make the most of your breakfast meal by including highly nutritious foods, such as wholegrain breads and cereals, fruits, low-fat dairy or fortified soy products and nuts and seeds. Avoid foods high in fat, sugar and salt (such as takeaway options) as these will simply take up the space (and provide more kilojoules) of more nutritious foods. People who skip breakfast also generally find it difficult to achieve their daily nutrient requirements, so best to start packing in those nutrients early!

One of the most common reasons why people say they skip breakfast is that they believe they “don’t have enough time” in the morning. We have come up with some tasty and nutritious breakfast ideas which are quick and easy to prepare:

  • Wholegrain cereal such as Sanitarium Weet-Bix® topped with fresh or canned fruit and low-fat milk;

  • Peanut butter on wholegrain toast with a piece of fresh fruit;

  • Natural muesli topped with some low-fat yoghurt and chopped banana;

  • A chilled liquid breakfast like Sanitarium Up&Go®;

  • A piece of fruit and a glass of low-fat milk.

And for those with a bit more time in the morning, perhaps you could try the following:

  • Fruit smoothie with some of your favourite varieties, such as banana or berries;

  • Baked beans on wholegrain toast;

  • Toasted wholegrain English muffin topped with ricotta cheese and sliced tomato;

  • Porridge topped with sliced banana and a small handful of walnuts.
