Cindy Crawford blackmailer jailed

The German man who attempted to blackmail supermodel Cindy Crawford for €100,000 has been sentenced to two years in jail.

Twenty-six-year-old Edis Kayalar was found guilty of attempting to extort €100,000 ($148,505) from the supermodel and her husband, Rande Gerber, over a photo of their seven-year-old daughter gagged and bound to a chair, Reuters reported.

The photo was taken by the seven-year-olds girl’s former nanny as a joke during a game of cops and robbers. According to court documents, Edis came across the picture through his friendship with the nanny.

Since last summer Edis made a number of attempts to contact Crawford and her family saying that the picture would receive a lot of money if leaked to the tabloids, court documents said.

In a statement the 44-year-old supermodel and her husband said, “We want to express our gratitude to the FBI, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles and the German law-enforcement authorities for their coordination and efforts in this case,” People magazine reported.

Green tea for leukaemia?

Getty Images

Getty Images

There is already a large amount of evidence to support green tea’s role in protecting against different cancers.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology now suggests that a concentrated extract of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), found in green tea, may assist in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), which is the most common kind.

Researchers at the prestigious Mayo Clinic gave patients with CLL between 400mg and 2000mg of EGCG daily. After just one month, lymphocyte count was reduced by around 20 percent in one-third of the patients.

Exclusive: Lara Bingle – My side of the story

Lara Bingle

Lara Bingle feels betrayed, hurt and humiliated over the nude photo disgraced AFL footballer Brendan Fevola leaked to the astonished world.

But with her “amazing” fiancé, Aussie cricket star Michael Clarke, by her side, Lara, 22, is determined to overcome her pain and embarrassment, and has launched a court battle to defend her dignity.

Equally important to her is to send a clear and unmistakable message that it is not OK to exploit and degrade women. Never.

Lara wants those who consider it a joke to circulate nude photos to think again, and she also hopes to inspire other women in the same situation to stand up for themselves.

Already her fightback against the man who betrayed her has seen him come under intense scrutiny. Dumped from the AFL’s advertising campaign, Brendan, who joined the Brisbane Lions at the end of last season after a decade with Carlton, is now struggling to save his controversial career.

Here, Lara breaks her silence to reveal Brendan’s lies, and fully explains “the meltdown” at the SCG that preceded the photo’s publication and why she has initiated legal action against him. She also talks about the support she has received, her real opinion of cricket and her connection to Sydney’s Underbelly.

This is Lara Bingle stripped bare – but on this occasion there’s a big difference. She is the one in control.

Did Brendan Fevola take the photograph?

Yes. I think anyone can see how distressed I was that he did that. I tried to cover myself up and I was pretty shocked when he took it.

Do you feel betrayed by him?

Of course, I do. I also feel exploited and compromised by the release of a photograph I never gave permission to him to take – and one he promised he had deleted when he realised how upset I was that he would do that. It should never have been taken in the first place. It was definitely an invasion of my privacy and I had always understood it had been deleted. To see he had sent it around has been really upsetting for my family and me.

Do you blame him for the world seeing it?

I do blame him. It was a complete betrayal at a time of my life when I trusted him. I was vulnerable and it was a total mistake to trust him. I can’t believe how trusting I was but I was 19 at the time.

Women need to be more aware of just how easy it is to take a picture like this with a mobile phone. It’s also incredibly humiliating to think he passed it around to his friends, who passed it on to their friends. When I found out about it , I just felt like I had been violated.

Should Brendan apologise, or has he already rung you to apologise?

Actually, it’s gone way beyond an apology and I would prefer not to speak to him.

For the full interview with Lara where she reveals why she is suing Brendan Fevola, how her and Michael cope with fame and how she really feels about cricket, in this week’s Woman’s Day (on sale March 8, 2010).

Karl Stefanovic: My two wives!

Karl Stefanovic: My two wives!

Not many jobs come with a second spouse. Then again, hosting the Today show is no ordinary job – just ask Karl and Lisa, who are so close they consider each other family.

When producers convinced publishing legend Lisa Wilkinson to take a seat beside Today show host Karl Stefanovic two years ago, they were hoping the couple would click and, as a result, arrest declining ratings.

Not only did they get what they wanted, they got a whole lot more. The two hosts didn’t just gel – they quickly grew so close they now refer to each other as my “second wife” and my “second husband”.

Like most people in close relationships, Lisa and Karl finish each others’ sentences, can tell what the other is thinking and poke fun at perceived foibles.

Yet, both remain happily married to spouses of theirown, who not only approve but encourage their other half’s on-and-off-air relationship – something Karl, in particular, admits he’s very thankful for.

You see, Lisa’s husband of 17 years is author, journalist and burly former Wallabies star Peter FitzSimons – not the type of guy you want off-side.

No-one was more aware of this than Lisa, who promptly organised a couples’ dinner soon after accepting the job, inviting Karl and Cassie, his wife and the mother of his three children.

“Cassie and I clicked straight away,” Lisa, also a mother of three, explains of the fateful evening. Meanwhile, Karl had to undergo a full FitzSimons interrogation before the big man was happy to accept his wife’s new on-the-job partner.

“Man, did he grill me!” Karl recalls with a laugh. “It’s like 400 questions from Peter – one firing after the other without a pause.

I mean, I’ve got the utmost respect for the guy, but he managed to ask me a question the moment I put a cube of cheese in my mouth … every time. Then he’d wait, while I chewed, for my answer.”

Lisa smiles knowingly. “Karl looked at me halfway through the evening like, ‘Is working with you really worth this?’”

“You know,” Karl adds, seriously, “The beauty is that we are all journos – Pete, Cass, Lisa, me. We aren’t just in the business – we absolutely live it and love it.”

Lisa wholeheartedly agrees: “Yes, we both really lucked out with our partners, because they totally understand that Karl’s and my relationship is so important for the show, and that people know us as a duo. In fact, I think Peter and Cass are pretty happy to kick us out of bed in the mornings and send us off to each other – ‘Out you go!’”

Sonia Kruger: How love saved me

Sonia Kruger

There must have been moments in the past 12 months when Dancing With The Stars co-host Sonia Kruger wanted to hide away from the world and cuddle up with her beloved staffie cross, Fergie.

But even with her marriage to banker James Davies crumbling, and a drugs scandal engulfing her MIX 106.5 co-host, Todd McKenney, Sonia hid her pain.

Today, though, there is no denying her feelings. Sonia is in love with Today Tonight executive producer Craig McPherson.

“They are clearly besotted with each other,” says one friend.

The two were recently spotted on Sydney’s North Shore, walking Fergie then having a coffee.

And her TV career is also set to take her star even higher, with Sonia last night making her debut on current affairs show Sunday Night.

She will also return to co-host the 10th series of Dancing, now being cast, and has been secretly filming a new prime-time series to premiere next month, while her popular makeover show, 10 Years Younger In 10 Days, will almost certainly return later this year.

Katie sent to scientology boot camp

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes has agreed to attend Scientology baby boot camp in preparation for a second child, but on one condition. She will submit to the sect’s bizarre rituals only if her husband Tom Cruise removes some of the suffocating restrictions on her life.

According to the New York Post, Katie, 31, spent four hours last week at the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, attending an intense “auditing” session in readiness for her and Tom’s new addition.

“This is exactly what happened before she got pregnant with Suri,” a source explains to the newspaper.

“Tom has made no secret of the fact that he would like another baby. It is almost as if she is being prepared for it.”

A website for the sect advocates the belief that the “health and sanity of the child begin long before birth”. In line with this, Katie has agreed to Tom’s request that she attend the church’s auditing sessions. These sessions are designed to reveal any “hidden crimes” she has committed against Scientology and explore any mistakes she’s made in past lives that may be interfering with her spiritual awareness.

Katie will also be expected to follow the sect’s “Clear Body, Clear Mind” plan, which involves rigorous exercise, sauna sessions, and vitamins and minerals to cleanse the body of “toxins”.

In return, Katie has given Tom, 47, a strict set of conditions he must follow. If she agrees to another Scientology pregnancy, he has to make some major adjustments to their lives.

Number one on her list of demands is that members of his extended family – who act as Katie’s unofficial minders – must move out of their Beverly Hills home. She’s also insisted Tom’s bodyguards and minders take a back seat in her life.

Spotted leaving a clinic recently, where she’s believed to have consulted a fertility specialist, Katie looked like any other mum-to-be – and a far cry from the closeted, bewildered-looking star we saw being shuffled to and from appointments by her security team when she was pregnant with Suri, now three.
