IVF twins for Celine Dion

IVF twins for Celine Dion

Twins are in, as the 42-year-old diva joins the growing ranks of Hollywood’s fertility-boosted mums, reports Jackie Brygel.

Ecstatic at the news she is pregnant with twins, Celine Dion last week vowed she’ll do whatever it takes to ensure her bundles of joy arrive safe and well.

The 42-year-old says she’ll even remain in bed to maintain a healthy pregnancy.

But the award-winning singer, who learns the gender of the twins this month, also confesses she’s having trouble keeping her nerves in check as she prays nothing will go wrong following her tragic miscarriage last November, just after the first trimester.

“My doctors had to constantly reassure me,” Celine admits to Le Journal de Montréal. “Each week I had sonograms. I heard their hearts beat.

I do almost nothing,” she says. “If you tell me I have to stay in bed, I will stay in bed until November when the babies are born.”

For, as Celine reminds herself, “To bring them into the world, there’s nothing more important than that. It’s incredible.”

Wacky weddings

Wacky weddings

This couple brought new meaning to the idea of a fairytale wedding. Jackie Brygel reports.

Shrek fans were green with envy when Tracey and Vivian Williams exchanged vows covered head to toe in body paint, as homage to the world’s most famous ogres.

Avid fans of the hit Shrek movies, Tracey and Vivian saw nothing odd about impersonating the jolly green giant and his love, Princess Fiona, on their big day – right down to the animated movie couple’s trademark ears.

“Our friends always used to say we looked like the characters when we went on nights out,” Tracey happily reveals. “Even though Shrek and Fiona are both green ogres, we didn’t take it offensively because we like them so much.”

Sperm frozen for 23 years! Meet our miracle baby

Sperm frozen for 23 years! Meet our miracle baby

At 21, Wayne Kuhn learned he had cancer, so he froze some sperm just in case. Now, as the South Australian dad tells Sandra White, he’s so glad he did…

Two years ago Woman’s Day visited Wayne Kuhn and his wife Kelly to meet their new baby girl, Elouise, who arrived 21 years after her dad’s sperm had been frozen.

Now the couple proudly introduce their second miracle daughter, Jorja, who was conceived using the oldest frozen sperm on record.

Wayne’s sperm was frozen 23 years ago after he was diagnosed with tumours on his lungs, kidney and testicles. Doctors suggested he safeguard his sperm in case the cancer treatment made him infertile.

“The chemotherapy would damage my sperm, so I was advised to freeze some before the treatment started in case I wanted children in the future,” Wayne, now 44, says.

Happily, Wayne beat his cancer, and he decided to keep his frozen sperm in storage.

” From a young age I had always dreamed of having a family,” he says. “I really hoped that one day I would be lucky enough to be called Dad.”

Sandra Bullock jokes about Jesse James’ infidelity

Sandra Bullock has joked about her marriage breakdown, during her first public appearance since she split from husband Jesse James.

The new mum of adopted son Louis was honoured at the Guys Choice Awards in Los Angeles and spoke about her troubled private life after her husband’s infidelity.

The 44-year-old looked stunning in a figure-hugging black dress as she picked up the Troops’ Choice Award.

She appeared to have no problem attributing her award to the recent attention on her private life.

“Let’s be honest here, just for a moment,” the UK’s Sun reported Bullock said when she collected her award.

“Did I win this for being entertainer of the year, or did I win this because of the spectacular IED [improvised explosive device] explosion that became my personal life?!

“It’s okay. Because I would do it over again if it was to entertain our troops, and our extraordinary troops deserve something much more than some actress in a tight dress talking [about] herself,” she said.

“Having a dad that’s a veteran, I see the sacrifices you made for this country. I’m so lucky every day to wake up having what I have and I thank you guys for that.”

MasterChef’s Jake just misses top 12

MasterChef's Jake just misses top 12

MasterChef‘s latest evictee Jake just missed out on making the top 12! He chats to us about his dream to open a beach seafood stand and his plans to travel.

What is the easiest part about being on a show like this?

I guess it was good not having to worry about the outside world. You just wrap yourself up in this little bubble of MasterChef and don’t think about anything else.

Were there any aspects of the show that you found hard?

I found it hard being away from home for so long but I really enjoyed the actual pressure of the show. When we were cooking I think it was the most enjoyable part. Even though it’s intense at the time when you finish you’re just buzzing.

You were only in two pressure tests in the show?

Yes, the last one wasn’t a pressure test it was the team challenge and then the taste test but I did a pressure test in top 50 for Neil Perry and then I did the Rick Stein one.

Do you think the pressure tests have helped you as a cook?

Oh, definitely, it gives you a real feel for what it is and a sense of urgency in what you’re doing.

Who do you think is going to win the competition?

Jonathan will be hard to beat. He and Marion are definitely the frontrunners, maybe with Adam and Alvin close behind. I think their knowledge is so broad and they’re so quick and meticulous.

Have you been watching much of the show when it plays back on television?

Yeah I have, I’ve watched most of it.

What has it been like seeing yourself on TV?

It was a bit hard to get used to. I didn’t realise I had such an ocker twang [laughs].

Do you think you came across fairly accurately?

Yeah, I guess I did.

What about everyone else?

Yeah, most of the time. A few people come off looking a little bit nastier than they actually are.

I know a few people have said Jonathan comes across as meaner than he actually is.

Yeah, he’s a great bloke and he came across looking like a little bit of a ratbag, which is a shame.

Do you guys all get along?

We all got along really well.

Was there anyone in the house that you were particularly close to?

No-one in particular. I think everyone I got along great with so there’s nobody I could really pinpoint.

What was the most important thing for you in terms of what you learnt on the show?

I guess it taught me a lot about myself and how I perform under pressure and how much I really enjoy food and I definitely want to pursue it.

A lot of the other contestants want to do their own restaurant, but you’ve said your dream is to open a beach seafood stand. Are you taking any further steps to go after that dream?

Yeah, I mean it’s still in the pipeline. I got knocked back on my application.

Was that before the show?

No, it was after but I didn’t actually mention MasterChef.

Do you think it would have helped if you did?

Oh maybe, I want to do it on my own merit rather than using the show. And my girlfriend and I are going travelling so I’ve sort of put everything on hold at the moment to concentrate on that and I’ve been given work experience in some restaurants.

Where are you guys travelling to?

We’re going to South-East Asia for about six weeks and then we’re going to live in Europe for 12 months.

That’ll be amazing. The food is going to be incredible.

Yeah, that’s what I’m looking forward to.

Is a *Friends* onscreen reunion in the works?

Getty

Will ’90s sitcom Friends follow in the footsteps of the Sex and the City movies and be the next television series to hit the big screen?

If actress Jennifer Aniston has her way an on-screen Friends reunion is very possible, Courteney Cox let slip to Fox News.

“We’ve got a good idea. There is a good way to get us all together,” Courteney Cox told Fox News on the red carpet for 2010’s Crystal + Lucy Awards.

“Jennifer [Aniston] told me, or someone told her, or she came up with the idea herself. I don’t think it will ever happen, but it would be a great way to get us all together!”

The cast of the popular ’90s show also included Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer.

There were also reports this week Jen would have a role in the next instalment of her best pal’s horror movie franchise, Scream 4.

Star magazine reported Jen was going to make a cameo in the fourth instalment of the series but the rumours were soon quashed by the film’s production company, Us magazine reported.

Don’t let your credit cards take control

Swiping your credit card is easy, dealing with the repercussions are hard. It's time to show it who's boss.
women with shoppings bags, Getty Images

THE latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data has revealed that retail sales have jumped up by 0.3 per cent seasonally adjusted in March compared to February, and it was the sixth consecutive quarter of positive trend growth in volume terms.

Clothing, footwear and other personal accessories had one of the larger increases for the quarter at 0.9 per cent, the ABS said, so it’s likely that we ladies may have had something to do with these results.

What is most surprising about this shopping trend is the fact that our mortgages have been eating away at most Australian’s disposable incomes and shopping budgets, with six rate rises in eight months by the Reserve Bank of Australia. But we haven’t stopped shopping, in fact these figures show we haven’t slowed down either!

So does this mean that we are spending away our savings or are we taking advantage of our credit cards? Either way it’s bad news for most of us with a home loan, because interest rates are not expected to drop any time soon and are more likely to keep rising.

For instance, an average $300,000 variable home loan has increased by $300 per month in repayments since September 2009 before rates began to rise. The average standard variable rate now up to just over 7 per cent and the benchmark rate (the average of the major four banks) is up to 7.38 per cent.

Credit cards move differently to variable home loan rates and always charge more interest because they are not securitised. This means if you don’t make your repayments your credit card provider won’t take your new pair of platform pumps off you like they will take your home if you default on your mortgage.

This is why it’s so important to keep track of your spending during this cycle of interest rate rises and especially with your debts so compare credit cards to make sure you’re getting a good deal. Interest rates for credit cards are also likely to rise following the latest cash rate increases, so make sure you pay off your debts before the next wave hits.

If you have more than one credit card debt, think about combining them with a low-rate balance transfer card because there are some great deals out there. For instance, HSBC is offering zero per cent for six months and St George and Bank SA are offering 0.99 percent for six months.

These can really get you out of the red without paying any interest if you use them wisely. Just make sure you check the terms and conditions because some may charge a high rate for purchases.

Review: *The Back-up Plan*

Jennifer Lopez plays Zoe

Jennifer Lopez plays Zoe

It must be the season to be romantic with Aussie leading men, with the release of The Back-up Plan featuring Jennifer Lopez and Australian actor Alex O’Loughlin.

Zoe (Lopez) is a sweet-natured, gorgeous-looking pet-shop owner who sells dogs that aren’t in-bred pure-breds. Zoe is somehow still single and wants to have a baby on her own. Not long after going through IVF treatment, she walks cross-legged into the rain to catch a cab and bumps into the hunk of her dreams: Stan (O’Loughlin). They argue, get wet, take a train and when they emerge dry and flirting under a blazing sun, you know this is for real.

The procedure takes and Zoe is soon pregnant. Very. What’s a new boyfriend supposed to do? He flees into a local park and is accused of being a pervert. Stan sells cheese for a living (he’s not the only one) and is developing a sustainable farm. And he looks great with his shirt off. Can they be more perfect? And do they still have sex with their clothes on in the 21st century?

Kate Angelo’s (Will & Grace) script delves into new territory — the single mother — but then squibs it. We find out both Zoe and her Nanna (Linda Lavin, Alice) have commitment issues stemming from the premature death of Zoe’s mother. There’s no independence statement here; this is the gals’ fault, which even the single mothers’ group accepts.

The script has some sharp edges, but not many. Zoe’s best friend Mona (comedian Michaela Watkins) tells Zoe: “You don’t want to have kids and I’m going to show you my vagina to prove it.” And the vagina, vagina, vagina scene with Dr Harris (Robert Klein) could have been a classic in a better movie. There is even some self-depreciating humour about Lopez’s butt, and Anthony Anderson tries ad-libbing, but ends up making poo jokes. Get the picture?

Despite the number of Saturday Night Live comedians in the cast, there isn’t enough funny material for them, although the birthing scene, which seems like something out of The Exorcist, garnered lots of laughs from a group of older females. But even they were quiet as the movie moved through the waters-breaking-at-an-inconvenient-time routine.

Lopez struggles with her comic timing and instead goes for funny faces to create her comedy. O’Loughlin does a good job but his abs are more impressive and should land him more modelling jobs than acting ones. And disabled dog Nutsy steals the show.

The whole cast, script and direction have a real TV comedy feel about them — light, airy and not what you expect to pay good money for. It could be a nice way to wind down a rainy Sunday, or wind up a girls’ night out. But make sure you have a decent back-up plan yourself. This won’t be the highlight of your night.

Pretty-in-pink polishes

Keeping in character with her good-girl alter ego, Charlotte York, Kristin Davis has been flashing sexy but sweet nails on the red carpet — and she’s not the only one!

Eva Mendez and Natalie Portman have also been spotted showing off the look.

Nail-care company Orly’s creative director, Fiona Hay, says fleshy pinks and nudes are great for all seasons. We ask her how to get Kristin’s girly nails.

1. File and buff nails into desired shape. Square tips with rounded corners creates a natural appearance and are so hot right now, Hay says.

2. Apply your favourite base coat. It’ll allow your polish to last longer while protecting your nails against staining, she says.

3. Apply two thin coats of Orly French Manicure Collection in Sweet Blush ($18.95), Hay recommends. Thin layers equals even and neat coverage. Drying time is cut in half. Finish with a top coat.
