Star power: We chat to Natalie Imbruglia

At 35, Natalie Imbruglia is finally at ease with herself. And, as she tells Michael Sheather, she’s changed her mind about motherhood.

Natalie Imbruglia, the beautiful, doe-eyed ingenue and former Neighbours star who smashed her way into music history in the late ’90s with her heartbreak hit Torn, has reached a personal watershed. At 35, after years of publicly declaring that even the thought of becoming a mother “terrified” her, Natalie, the self-described “gypsy” of the pop world, wants to have a child.

“My thinking has changed,” says Natalie, who is currently single. “There was a time when I couldn’t think of anything worse, when it was perhaps a very scary concept for me. But if you’re asking me today whether I would like to have a baby, then the answer is yes, I certainly would. There are times when I have been clucky. I am 35 and it has been on my mind.”

Change is a critical and constant theme in Natalie’s life. The past few years have been marked by both emotional and professional upheaval. Two years ago, her marriage to Silverchair lead singer Daniel Johns ended with a joint statement from the high-profile couple citing the combined strain of work commitments and a long-distance relationship.

Sometimes disappointment, even heartache, can herald unanticipated changes: freedom, renewed confidence and a greater understanding. Age and its accompanying maturity have helped Natalie welcome each of these in recent years.

Part of this personal transformation, she says, is a readiness to place herself back into the public eye. With a new role on the Australian version of the UK talent show The X Factor, screening on the Seven Network in September, Natalie believes she is finally coming to terms with her place in the world. In so many ways, she’s no longer torn.

“I think I am more comfortable in my skin now than I have ever been,” she says, her legs curled beneath her as she reclines in a retro ’50s ball chair, basking in the brief glory of Sydney’s winter sun. “I have been through some big changes in my life, sure. But there are good things that come with that. Just the wisdom that you get – you think you know it all and then you realise that you don’t. I think it’s that I like myself a lot more. Part of it is age, I’m sure. I am finally okay with who I am. I don’t need to project a particular image, be this way or that. I know who I am and that gives you a confidence that filters through in every area of your life.

“Sure, I carry my battle scars, but I certainly feel happy, strong and a little less guarded. I’m not worried about what people might think. In the past, I was someone who was, perhaps, a little too guarded for my own good. I think that is about the struggle of being in the public eye. Some people can do it and some can’t. I think I have much more of a sense of lightness around it now.”

Glenn McGrath & Sara Leonardi: We’re getting married

Glenn McGrath & Sara Leonardi: We're getting married

Cricket superstar Glenn McGrath will later this year marry the woman who helped heal his broken heart. With a huge smile lighting up his face, Glenn couldn’t hide his joy when girlfriend Sara Leonardi accepted his proposal just 15 months after they met.

“Yes, we’re engaged,” Glenn, 40, confirmed to Woman’s Day last week. “And we’re both very happy about it.”

The former Test bowler, who thought he’d never find love again after the tragic death of his wife, Jane, has now officially given his heart to 28-year-old Sara, who is wearing an impressive diamond engagement ring.

The proposal was no shock to the couple’s family and friends, who are thrilled Glenn has overcome his sorrow, thanks to his new love. “He’s enjoying himself now, which is what it’s all about,” says a close friend. “He deserves to have some fun.”

“I see him all the time and he is so happy with Sara,” agrees another friend of the couple, who were introduced in April last year at a party in South Africa’s Cape Town, where Sara was living and Glenn was playing cricket.

Jen’s stalker terror – Violent patient obsessed

Jen's stalker terror - Violent patient obsessed

He lay in wait for her, clutching duct tape and a sharp object – hoping to make his sick dream of having Jennifer Aniston at any cost come true.

Violent mental patient Jason Peyton’s delusional quest luckily came unstuck when police caught him prowling near the star’s Hollywood Hills home, thanks to a tip-off from the man’s parents.

Last week, a terrified Jen, 41, was granted a restraining order against the man who had spent eight days hunting her down after driving across the USA, and who’d chillingly scratched his declaration of love for the actress into the paintwork of his car.

Concerns were first raised when Peyton phoned his mother to say he was “on a mission to go to Jennifer Aniston”, and that she would “hear about it on the news”. His worried parents tipped off Los Angeles police, who found Peyton “laying in wait in a location he believes she frequents”.

On Monday August 9 a Los Angeles Superior Court commissioner garanted Jennifer a three-year extension on her restraining order against Peyton

He ruled that Peyton must stay 100 yards away from Aniston’s home, places of work and vehicles, as well as employees, agents, managers and other reps connected to the A-lister Radar Online reported.

Documents filed in court describe Peyton, 24, who is currently on psychiatric hold, as “a diagnosed delusional and paranoid schizophrenic, with a history of violence and criminal harassment and stalking, including an apparent planned abduction of a former stalking victim”. His violent past, according to the legal documents, includes stabbing himself and attacking his mother with a golf club.

Peyton allegedly told investigators in the case, “Jennifer communicated to me mentally that she wants me to come and marry her and wants me to be the father of her children. We love each other.”

Why Robyn is standing by mad Mel

Why Robyn is standing by mad Mel

When Mel Gibson’s former wife stepped-up to defend her cheating ex in his war with his Russian mistress, many were surprised. But fiercely protective mum Robyn Moore, who had seven children to the actor during their turbulent 28-year marriage, was not about to let Oksana Grigorieva, 40, paint Mel as an abusive father.

In an affidavit tendered to the Los Angeles court, Robyn, 54, supported her ex in his bid to share custody of Lucia, his nine-month-old daughter with Oksana.

“Mel never engaged in any physical abuse of any kind toward me before, during or after our marriage,” she said. “Mel was a wonderful and loving father.”

It was a significant step for the extremely private woman, who stood by Mel, 54, despite his public battle with booze.“Robyn’s tried to stay out of this, but she wanted to make sure there was no speculation of what happened within her family,” a friend told US People magazine. “She felt she needed to speak out and protect her children and family.”

Determined to give their children – Hannah now 29, twins Edward and Christian, 28, William, 25, Louis, 22, Milo, 20 and Thomas, 11 – a normal life, Robyn rarely joined Mel as he jetted around the world for his work. Despite their father’s fame and fortune, they did household chores and worked at part-time jobs to earn pocket money.

Ange’s men show the love

Angelina Jolie

The actress’s dad and brother join her and Brad at the premiere of her new movie, and the night turns into a family love-in.

F ar from casting a shadow over their “all too perfect lives”, a new tell-all from Andrew Morton seems to have spurred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt on to re-ignite their passion, judging by their red carpet antics at the premiere of Ange’s new film, Salt.

Radiant and clearly still smitten with Brad, Ange, 35, seemed oblivious to both criticism and the adoration of her screaming fans outside Hollywood’s Chinese Theatre. And Brad, 46, is clearly just as much in love, stroking her hair, affectionately patting her bottom and nuzzling into her neck.

But Ange had two other reasons to look so happy. Her 71-year-old actor dad Jon Voight – with whom she had a long-running feud – and brother James Haven, 37, showed up on the red carpet together to support her.

Jon and James smiled and posed for the cameras, before Ange’s proud dad admitted he worries about her doing her own stunts, and declared “That’s my girl!” when checking out posters showing her in character, with steely glare.

The men then ducked inside the theatre to let Ange enjoy the spotlight. Later the whole family sat together to watch the flick, but at the after-party, the closeness between Ange, Brad, John and James was even more obvious.
