Rafters couple Jess and James: We can’t wait to have kids!

Rafters couple Jess and James: We can't wait to have kids!

Co-stars Jessica Marais and James Stewart have a steamy relationship in Packed To The Rafters, but their real-life romance is getting even hotter.

Blonde beauty Jessica Marais and her Packed To The Rafters co-star James Stewart have been a couple for only 18 months, but she’s already saying he would be a great father.

She’s hinting there’s every chance her romance with the 34-year-old actor will lead to marriage and motherhood – she’s even getting tips on how to bring up kids.

“I always badger Mum with questions because I’m getting to the age when I start to think a little bit more about having children,” says Jess, 25, who plays Rachel Rafter in Seven’s Logie-winning series.

“I’ve started thinking, ‘I wonder what that will be like?’ and how to get through it, and how not to put your own fears and your own failures on your children. It’s such a huge responsibility and I guess everyone just stumbles through and does the best that they can. “I suppose I’m lucky that [my film and TV roles] both explored those themes constantly, so I feel like I’m at peace with them,” she says.

Working with twins Ruby and Emily, who share the role of baby Ruby Rafter on the show, Jess has had a lot of time to get clucky. She says the whole cast are “consumed” with the delightful bubs. “I’m obsessed. I’m the cluckiest. I just love kids!” she confesses with a laugh.

Oprah: I’m on my way!

Oprah: I'm on my way!

Excited Oprah plans to embrace all Australia has to offer during her trip.

It’s the “royal” visit that has everybody buzzing: TV queen Oprah Winfrey is bringing her show – and 300 devoted fans – to Australia … and there’s every chance she won’t want to leave.

Oprah will hit our shores on December 8 and spend eight days in the country. “I can’t tell you how excited we are to be able to come Down Under,” she told Aussies after the trip was announced.

“I’m excited about there being a female Prime Minister – maybe I could meet her. Hugh Jackman – I love him a lot … and the little Irwin girl.” Organisational expert Peter Walsh, who has worked on Oprah’s show for four years, says, “She’s always said, ‘Australia is the place I’d love to see.’” And Peter is convinced she won’t want to leave.

“One of the things she might learn is the relaxing Australian style. My suspicion is that Australia will seduce her enough for her to put her feet up and stay longer than a week,” he says.

Oprah will film two episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House, and famous Aussies including Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Simon Baker, Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann, Jamie Durie, Curtis Stone and Sophie Delezio are touted to be guests. “It would be a great honour to be associated with Oprah,” says Sophie’s dad, Ron Delezio. “I believe she’s a good woman.”

Lonely Ange confesses: I have no friends

Lonely Ange confesses: I have no friends

As she focuses on her charity work, Ange reveals the truth about her lonely existence.

Jennifer Aniston has Courteney Cox, Drew Barrymore has Cameron Diaz and Oprah has Gayle King, but when it comes to BFF status, Angelina Jolie is seriously lacking. In a demoralising confession, the actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador has admitted she has no real friends to turn to when the going gets tough.

“I don’t have a lot of friends to talk to. I mostly talk to Brad,” Ange told CNN during an interview while visiting Pakistan, hiding her embarrassment with nervous laughter.

It’s an ironic predicament for the actress, who’s invested her life in being a “friend of the world”, but has few pals herself. Those within Angelina’s inner circle say her admission comes as no surprise, explaining she’s not the warmest person to be around.

“Angelina has no real friends,” says a source. “When she works, she doesn’t talk to anyone. Everyone will be buzzing on set, or in the studio for a photo shoot, and when she walks in, the immediate silence is deafening. She does her work and goes. She’s a very intense person.”

Add to that her reputation as a man-eater, and Angelina struggles to find women who want to get close to her.

Aussie actor Peter Phelps tells all about family, his career and celebrating his 50th birthday!

Aussie actor Peter Phelps

He’s been a fixture on our screens for the past three decades, but it’s still hard to believe that eternally-youthful actor Peter Phelps is preparing to celebrate a major personal milestone – his fiftieth birthday on September 20.

Currently filming series three of Nine’s high-octane drama Rescue: Special Ops, Peter confesses he initially approached the big day with a little trepidation.

“But then,” he says, “I thought ‘Nah, I’ve done everything I’ve wanted to do. I’ve travelled the world, and now I have two beautiful daughters. In terms of work, I’ve gone from playing the young romantic lead to the grizzled veteran – seemingly overnight! But I’m in a great place. An era has passed and a new one is starting.”

So exactly how will Peter be marking his turn of half a century?

“I was going to have a huge celebration, and then I decided to scale it down and thought ‘I’ll probably have something a little bit closer to home’,” he reveals.

Clearly, Peter, a devoted parent with his long-time partner Donna to girls Aja Blue, seven, and Polly, four, wouldn’t trade the joys of family life for anything in the world.

“We’re very hands-on parents,” he says. “I help them with their homework and I’m teaching them all about the ocean and swimming. It’s great and so natural and easy to do. It’s an extraordinary thing to see a human being grow up before your eyes.”

And Peter certainly isn’t showing any signs of slowing down himself. As well as performing action scenes as often as possible in Rescue: Special Ops, he’s fitter than ever thanks to regular time in the water.

“I’m even taking up new sports,” he reveals. “Stand-up surfboard paddling is my latest. I’m probably in better shape than I was 20 years ago. There’s no partying anymore. I’m on a very healthy route at the moment.”

Would Peter, who bared his six-pack back in the early Nineties as one of the lifeguards in the hit US series Baywatch, still consider taking his gear off for the cameras these days?

“Well, it would have to be in context with the script, but there would be no gratuitous nude scenes for me,” he laughs.

Peter’s career highs:

  1. It’s been 30 years since Peter Phelps first hit our screens with an ongoing role in the early-Eighties soap The Restless Years.

  2. Acting parts followed in Sons and Daughters, A Country Practice, The Flying Doctors, G.P. and, of course, Stingers – in which he played the Logie-winning lead role of Peter Church from 1998 until 2004.

  3. Since then, Peter’s been front-and-centre in All Saints, Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities and now Rescue: Special Ops, along with many other big-screen and TV productions.

  4. “Being employed for this long and still being employable is the highlight,” smiles Peter. “I always just devote myself to the job at hand.”

Is life something to endure rather than enjoy?

Man hand-cuffed

Image source: Getty - posed by model

It was thought by all those around me that I was in for something special. I worked in my field for three years, and then gave it all away. Those who had looked up to me now look down on me with an expression of betrayal and disdain.

I went back to university to study another field, which was my new interest – it was what I wanted to do with my life.

I enjoyed the work for about a year, and then grew bored. I have now been in the field for ten years and the only thing keeping me from quitting is my large mortgage.

I have other interests, but I seem to be fairly fickle. Should I pursue these, only to grow bored after a year? Should I jeopardise my lifestyle on such whims?

Some of my friends have told me that life will start to take on new meaning once I have children. However, my wife and I are unable to have children, despite having exhausted all possible avenues – along with large sums of money and emotion.

I am now 42 years old, and I feel like my life has been a complete failure. I still don’t even know what I should do with my life. All I know is that whatever I choose I will tire of it in short order and become bored and despondent again.

I also feel like I have failed my wife by not being able to provide her with children, or with an easy lifestyle as she works hard to help pay the mortgage and bills.

Should I simply give up and accept that life is not something to enjoy but rather to endure? If so, what’s the point of life?

You and your wife are a team and are working together to fund your mortgage and bills, which is how the majority of modern couples live. If you voiced your concerns about not supporting her it’s more than likely that she will reassure you that this is not what she expects – in fact she could well be very surprised that you feel like this.

You imply that it is because of you that you haven’t been able to have a family; if that situation were reversed would you call your wife a failure? Not being able to have a family can be very hard to come to terms with but you owe it your wife and yourself to deal with it together and give her the chance to offer you the love and support you would want to give to her.

In time you can also consider whether fostering would be something you would be interested in, as that is an area where you can make a huge difference to a child’s life and get so much back from them.

Your current personal and professional situations have a great deal to do with your feeling that life is to be endured, rather than enjoyed, but that can change.

You have a loving wife and friends who can see the worth in you even when you cannot and you’re going through a very vulnerable time when you’re too quick to criticise yourself.

The job situation and desire for constant change and stimulation is something which applies to many people, particularly very creative individuals and doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

You are clearly very bright and able to apply yourself effectively to any project but having major financial concerns does make it difficult to change jobs frequently so you should investigate whether your current employer offers any further training or education you could take advantage of to develop your career along a more interesting path.

Speak to an employment consultant who will be able to look at your career and experience in a more dispassionate way and help you consider your options. Don’t suffer alone – you’re at a time when you need help so ask for it and you can start to make positive changes.

Robbie Williams battling a mystery illness

Robbie Williams battling a mystery illness

UK pop star Robbie Williams has revealed he is battling a mystery illness, but won’t say what it is.

The recently married singer says he misdiagnosed himself with depression four years ago, but recently discovered he was actually ill with something else.

“I thought I was lethargic and depressed as a person. I thought that was my make-up,” he told UK radio station Magic 105.4 in a recent interview.

“I found out a few months ago that I’d been ill, completely by mistake, and I don’t want to go into the whys and wherefores but what I had made you lethargic and made you depressed and I’d had it for years and not known and I’m on treatment for it. It’s changed my life.”

The 36-year-old singer has experienced a number of disappointing moments during his career, including being in debt of £500,000 ($835,000) after leaving pop group Take That 15 years ago.

“Superstardom gets everyone in the end,” he said.

“I don’t think anybody’s responded to it particularly well when they get to a certain level. Elton John went mental, Elvis went mental, I went mental. Everybody at some point, at that stage, goes bonkers.”

The singer also revealed that one of his biggest mistakes was covering George Michael’s song ‘Freedom’ as his first solo single.

“I recorded ‘Freedom’ to kind of get the record company off my back,” he said.

“And basically, the video to ‘Freedom’, I did all the lip-syncing to George Michael’s version because I hadn’t recorded my version yet.

“And also I was in a bad, bad, way. I was pre-rehab and I’d just finished off the top drawer of the mini-bar, the whole top drawer, all the liqueurs and spirits, and then started the video.

“I was in a very, very bad way so I wasn’t making the best choices then as you can imagine. I realised that I’d got to go off to rehab, I was an alcoholic.”

Did Nicolas Cage abuse his child’s mother?

Did Nicolas Cage abuse his child's mother?

US actor Nicolas Cage is being sued for US$13 million ($13.8 million) by his child’s mother, Christina Fulton, who alleges the actor abused her physically, mentally and emotionally.

Christina, who is the mother of Nicolas’s 19-year-old son Weston, alleges the 46-year-old star threw her out of her home and wasted the best years of her life because she raised her son alone, E! Online reported.

Christina claims Nicolas didn’t share the parenting duties despite having joint legal and physical custody rights. Christina also says when the pair’s son turned 18 Nicolas removed Weston from his mother’s home, which Nicolas had purchased for them, and then sent her an eviction notice.

Currently facing financial issues of her own, Christina owes more than $1 million in taxes due to an error she blames on Nicolas’ ex-business manager, Sam Levin, who she is also suing. Nicolas recently settled his own multimillion-dollar lawsuit with Sam.

Christina has said that if they can’t to sort out their differences by January 15, 2011 he can expect to see her in court when the case begins on July 11, 2011.

Former paramedic tells what happened the night Jett Travolta died

Former paramedic tells what happened the night Jett Travolta died

As John Travolta and Kelly Preston await the arrival of their son, they are faced with new claims related to their son Jett’s death in the Bahamas last year.

Former Nassau paramedic Tarino Lightbourne, who treated John Travolta’s son the night he died, claims Jett was dead hours before he arrived at the scene, the UK’s Daily Mail reported.

Lightbourne also claims he was ordered to take Jett’s body to a nearby private plane rather than a local hospital, which was 15 minutes away.

Following the death, John Travolta claimed he was the victim of a US$25 million ($27 million) extortion attempt by Lightbourne.

Travolta claimed he was asked to pay Lightbourne US$25 million for the return of an indemnity form signed by the star, which Lightbourne says proved Travolta had refused to send his son to the local hospital.

Lightbourne was charged and a five-week trial took place in Nassau last year. A retrial was then ordered following details of the case being reported prematurely.

However, before the retrial could take place, Travolta surprisingly dropped the case which had cost him millions of dollars in legal fees.

In the Daily Mail interview, Lightbourne said when he arrived at the scene Jett was lying naked on the bathroom floor covered in a towel. He said Jett had a gashed head and two people were giving him a heart massage. The paramedic said local doctor Romeo Fernandez and his wife Emma, a nurse who ran a local clinic, were at the scene.

“The doctor said he had suffered a seizure and hit his head when he fell. I asked how long ago and he said ‘a few minutes’,” Lightbourne said.

“The boy’s eyes were fixed and dilated, I noticed dry blood stains around both his ears and nostrils and the sides of his mouth … and the body was already in a state of rigor mortis. That usually starts about three hours after death.

“With my back turned to the other people in the room, I whispered to the doctor: ‘This boy is dead. Why don’t you call it [pronounce death]?’ Dr Fernandez said: ‘I know — just continue with CPR’.’

Lightbourne said that as a paramedic he was forced to follow the instructions of any doctor present and continued performing CPR. He claims he then heard one of the men present say: “Gentlemen, do we have an agreement? We can make a lot of money out of this. Everybody remain quiet and we can make a lot of money.”

He said he was then told that he could “retire” by going along with the “charade” in the room.

Lightbourne says he felt everything about the events that took place were “fast tracked”. “You have to ask yourself why,” he said.
