Princess Mary is doing double duty

It’s only a few months until her due date, but the princess is busier than ever.

Her twins are due in just over three months but there’sno slowing down for Crown Princess Mary. With her bump now clearly showing, the popular royal is as duty-bound as ever.

Renowned for her dinky-di work ethic, the energetic and vibrant pregnant princess has attended a string of charity and regal events in the past few weeks, as well as preparing to move her family into a new home.

At a function to mark 25 years of the Danish Brain Injury Association, of which she is a patron, a glowing Mary happily kneeled to accept a posy of flowers from a very excited four-year-old girl named Emma, before telling the youngster that her twins have already started kicking.

“Yes, there is some movement now,” a smiling Mary told Emma, before revealing that her children, Christian, 4, and Isabella, 3, are slowly becoming more excited. “Yes, little by little. They are getting more and more interested. Right now, they just call them ‘the babies’,” said Mary, 38, who shone throughout the function, warmly greeting doctors and patients.

“There is no slowing her down,” marvelled one onlooker. “Pregnancy and having twins obviously agrees with her.”

Kath and Kim are back and they're live!

Funny girls Jane Turner and Gina Riley will bring their Kath and Kim characters to life in a new live show.

The comic duo will headline Sydney’s World’s Funniest Island comedy festival at Cockatoo Island on October 16 and 17 joining a line-up including Wil Anderson, the Umbilical Brothers and Julia Morris.

Event organiser John Pinder said Kath and Kim will be a favourite. “This really is a huge comedy coup for World’s Funniest Island,” he said.

“Gina and Jane are Australia’s biggest comedy stars and they are hosting their first-ever Australian live show with us. We’re feeling a little bit special.”

And what did Kath and Kim have to say about their up coming appearance?

“We are extounded to be invited to the World’s Most Yumerous Island,” Kath said.

“We are currently on a specific cruise as we speak and doing all the islands. We can’t wait to drop in to World’s Funniest and getting a couple more lays when we arrive. We hear it’s just like Ibiza … but funny.”

She comes from good creative stock. Grandfather Roald Dahl’s books sit on the bookshelves of hundreds of thousands of homes. Grandmother Patricia Neal was an actress, best known for her role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Sophie has forged a career of her own. Model, writer and now television star, Sophie Dahl shows no sign of slowing down.

Jessica Swavley spoke to the British darling about her new show, The Delicious Miss Dahl.

What is your favourite food?

Oh God, it changes every day. Currently comfort food: fish pie, mushy peas, really good creamy mashed potato.

Do you have people around for dinner? What would we find on the menu?

Yes, quite a lot. Friday’s menu was wild salmon with a salsa verde, curd rice, spinach and a salad, homemade bread and a lemon tart for pudding.

What excites you most about food?

The alchemy of it. That you can put something in the oven one way, and 45 minutes later it comes out as another thing entirely. It’s magical.

Have you had any food disasters?

Loads. Always when trying to show off. Soufflés and puff pastry collapsing, cakes like rocks. I always think the best thing is to laugh and own it.

How has your relationship with food changed over the years?

I’ve always loved it, but I think I’m much more aware now of where it comes from, what’s in it.

How did the idea of the show come about?

I wrote a book about food, because I’m greedy and I write, and it combined two passions. A production company saw my book and thought that there was a show lurking there. I could talk about food until the cows come come home, so it was a happy marriage.

Who would you like to cook for?

People I love. My idea of total bliss is a big heaving table with lots of happy well-fed people at it.

What is your food weakness?

Cheap chocolate.

How do you think the food landscape has changed over the past few years?

People have become a lot more aware of the seasonality and sustainability of what they eat, and I think it’s impacted on both how we shop and how we eat. Because I live in the country, we grow a lot of fruit, and I buy most of my vegetables and dairy from a local farm shop, and my meat from the local butcher. I like being able to shop locally, and a decade ago, I’m not sure how much everyone was thinking about that.

Do you think people such as Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver and shows such as MasterChef have changed people’s relationship with food?

I think they’ve made cooking more accessible and made people more adventurous. The things they cook seem within reach.

Do you think the media should take more responsibility for the body images they portray?

Yes, particularly now we live in a time where dreary amounts of attention is given to pictures of women caught unawares, with some newspaper, magazine or blog gleefully pointing out her every flaw. But I think we also have a responsibility as consumers to question why that might be appealing to us, and what kind of legacy we’re creating for our daughters and granddaughters, putting microscopic attention on our bodies and the bodies around us.

What advice would you give to young women who are interested in the fashion/beauty industry?

Boring mum-type advice! Finish your education, and if you want to give it a go, look for a reputable model agency. Don’t waste money on modelling “courses” or “schools”, a proper agency will teach you the ropes as you go. Very rarely is modelling a long-term career, so it is hugely important for both your self-esteem and bank account to develop other skills.

Describe your ultimate Sunday morning?

Poached eggs on toast in bed with all the papers and a big pot of tea.

Do you have a saying you live by?

I don’t think so. I say “What a joy” far too often.

What are your ‘can’t live without’ beauty products?

I love anything Jurlique, particularly the rose water, and Maybelline Great Lash mascara is spectacular. That and ChapStick.

Both. Sorry.

Neither. I hate champagne and I don’t love beer. Can I have a martini?

Jodi Gordon talks spring racing fashion

Spring racing is here!

Get your hats on ladies, the Spring Racing Carnival is here once again, and this year it promises to deliver much more glamour and style.

The main reason for this is that Jodi Gordon (who knows a thing or two about fashion) is this year’s Royal Randwick ambassador. While she hastily admits she doesn’t know all that much about placing a bet, she is more than confident when it comes to fashion.

“I don’t know anything about betting, I’m so bad, I guess you just pick a colour or a lucky name or number and go for it,” she said.

“For me it’s all about the fashion. I think all girls are the same we enjoy the day and it’s more about getting the outfit together and the fashion and the shoes.”

This year Jodi, who will be a judge for Fashions on the Field, predicts racegoers will be opting for glamour and sophistication, with a hint of personalised style through their accessories.

She is also looking forward to spending some time at Royal Randwick’s newest attraction, the Carousel, which will be full of essential race-day facilities, including bookies on-site, a pamper palace and a selection of lounges and bars.

Here is how she will be choosing her outfit and accessories and what she won’t be leaving home without when the carnival kicks off.

What do you look for in a races frock?

I think the main things are style and elegance. The races are all about classic glamorous feminine outfits style and elegance.

What is your favourite races accessory?

I am a fan of accessories in terms of hats and little bits of jewellery and a beautiful handbag. This year it’s all about the hat, the proper hat. But it depends on your outfit. You could also go for a fascinator or a floral head dress.

Do you often opt for a fascinator of a hat?

I think I like to mix it up, but I love a beautiful hat. I love the idea of a hat. I think I need to try a hat on with an outfit first, though. Really, at the races you want to look glamorous and stylish but you also want to be comfortable.

What are the top three things you make sure you have in your handbag at the races?

I think I’ll definitely be having some party feet in my handbag and a bit of make-up to touch up throughout the day and my phone and my form guide to place a bet.

What should the men be wearing?

I think for the guys it’s all about having a classic well-fitted suit and paying attention to detail with a handkerchief and a classic-style belt and polished shoes. Men should always have nice polished shoes.

Junior MasterChef: There are no ordinary kids!

The youngest stars of the hit cook-off tell Lucy Chesterton how they became mini kitchen whizzes.

While most kids dream of a cake on their birthday, the clever batch of Junior MasterChefs – including the youngest contestants, Nick and Siena – are far more interested in making their own.

In fact, when Junior MasterChef star and second-youngest contestant Nick turned 10 this year, normal party food for kids wasn’t on the menu. Instead, Nick opted for the famous fare at the award winning 5-star ARIA restaurant in Sydney, owned by MasterChef favourite Matt Moran.

“I went to ARIA and I met Matt Moran there!” he says, excitedly. “It’s the best thing that ever happened to me – besides Junior MasterChef.”

There’s definitely no nugget-and-chips children’s menu at the waterfront eatery, which features exotic ingredients such as nettles and black oyster plant – known as salsify – on the menu. Not to mention the average kid’s worst nightmare – shaved Brussels sprouts salad!

But Nick’s cultured palate means he might one day be giving his mentor Matt a run for his money as a celebrity chef. “My ambition is to be a chef and own my own restaurant!” declares Nick, one of the standout competitors to make it through the young contestants’ cook-off.

The Block: Where are they now?

The show’s 2003 stars all turned fame into success!

Gaz and Waz Gavin Atkins and Warren Sonin were the designer duo of the original Block back in 2003, and gave us a dose of gay pride as the first same-sex couple on Aussie reality TV.

The irrepressible pair still live a luxurious life, but now they run their business Designer Boys from the peaceful surrounds of a 24ha property in Byron Bay, in NSW.

“We’ve got 30 cows wandering around,” says Waz, 45. “Basically our lives have changed completely since we were on The Block. If you think that was chalk then this is cheese!”

It’s an entirely different landscape to the corporate jobs they once knew. “We thought, if we can survive The Block, we can do this,” Waz says. “So after the show we quit our jobs and started Designer Boys. But nothing has been handed to us – we’ve probably worked harder than anyone else.”

The pair are clearly thrilled with their tree-change. The solitude of their home allows Gav to indulge his passion for art, which he provides to hotels and resorts through Designer Boys Collections, while both say the silence is a very different but welcome kind of luxury.

The overjoyed father opens up to Frank Thorne and Glen Williams about his long, exhausting cycling mission to find his little boy Andrew.

After criss-crossing Europe for thousands of kilometres, shedding tears of exhaustion and anguish as he searched for his son, the first thing Ken Thompson did with his little boy – at six-year-old Andrew’s request – was playing a board game called Maze.

The whole world has read about Ken’s two-and-a-half-year search for Andrew after his wife, Melinda Stratton, abducted him from their Sunshine Coast home. Now, talking to Woman’s Day from Amsterdam about his joyous reunion with his son, Ken, 57, says he had no idea what to expect, what his wife had told his son about him, or whether Andrew even remembered who he was.

He didn’t know what words he wanted to hear when they were introduced, but what he heard made his heart melt.

“I want you to help me with some toys,” Ken recounts Andrew saying at the start of their 40-minute meeting under the watchful eye of psychologists. Andrew then asked him to play Maze.

“He’s a very bright boy. I showed him how to play the game once, where you build a pathway through a maze, and the second time he beat me,” says Ken, a former NSW Fire Brigades Deputy Commissioner. “It was a wonderful moment.”

Miranda leaves nappies to Orlando

For supermodel Miranda Kerr, all the fears of becoming a first-time mum are being washed away by the huge support she’s enjoying from husband Orlando Bloom.

As her baby countdown enters the final three months, Miranda says after being “sick early on”, pregnancy is now bliss and a challenge she is facing head-on.

“It’s natural to be a little afraid – I am a little afraid, too – but I am embracing it,” she reveals. “Being pregnant has been an incredibly moving and emotional experience, and one I am loving so much.”

Before the sun rises over the Hollywood Hills, Today show presenter Richard Reid is already out and about, downing a shot of caffeine before taking Woman’s Day on a top-speed spin around Tinseltown’s best celebrity hotspots.

The man who brings a sprinkling of star power into our homes every morning with his inimitable energy is no less enthusiastic in real life. Forget Robert De Niro and Susan Sarandon, autograph hunters are vying for Richard’s scribble the moment we set foot on the street.

“First stop: Urth Caffe,” Richard declares as we skid into a parking lot in LA, where the problem of looking for a spot is solved by valets who come running to take the wheel.

The cafe is low-key outside, but inside the tables are packed with people slurping coffee from bowls larger than their heads. “Isabel Lucas loves this place,” Richard says. “She stopped in here for lunch after her LA car crash, and the paparazzi crowded around outside. This was the scene of her first statement – ‘I’m fine!’ She brought Entourage star Adrian Grenier along to prove their relationship hadn’t hit the skids!”

Already wide-eyed from our oversized coffees, we head to the elegant outdoor market known as The Grove.
