Bega mum Karen Bell tells: I can finally smile again

Karen Bell tells: I can finally smile again

After losing three kids in a murder-suicide, Karen Bell is starting anew.

As Karen Bell sings soothingly to her slumbering one-year-old son, Connor, she smiles at the little boy who has at last restored her to her rightful place – that of simply being a mother. “I think I was born to be a mum,” Karen beams. “To have that role given back to me makes me so happy. Connor has healed my life. He’s the reason I believe in miracles.”

As she celebrates Connor’s first birthday at their little hilltop cabin in south-east New South Wales, she’s bursting to share more happy news – she and partner Dean Gray are expecting another baby in late February.

For the past two years, we have known Karen as the tragic mother who had her three young children murdered by her hard-drinking and violent husband, Gary Poxon.

On June 27, 2008, after Karen had walked out on him following another brutal episode, Poxon killed Jack, 8, Maddie, 7, and Bon, 16 months, by running hoses from the exhaust into the cabin of his vehicle, filling it with carbon monoxide. Gary also died in the car.

Karen was left with an all-consuming grief, believing she could never love or trust a man again. Then along came house painter Dean Gray, the brother of her best friend.

Junior MasterChef’s George: These kids are making me clucky

Junior MasterChef's George: These kids are making me clucky

The judge hopes for a little MasterChef of his own.

Being surrounded by smiling children on the set of Junior MasterChef has got judge George Calombaris hankering after a family of his own. “I definitely want to have kids,” he says.

Watching the pint-size cooks whip up complicated delicacies has been a thrill for George, who says he is surprised at the skill, precision and patience of the aspiring chefs, none older than 12.

But for George, the only childless judge among Gary Mehigan, Anna Gare and Matt Preston, the real reward has been seeing the bond between the creative kids and their proud parents – something he hopes he can achieve as a father.

“There’s nothing better in a chef’s career than when you cook for your family,” says George, who’s close to his own large Greek family. “It doesn’t matter what type of customers come into the restaurant usually, but when your family are there, there’s a certain little buzz you have.”

And working with the latest batch of MasterChef contestants isn’t the only way that George manages to squeeze in some practice parenting.

Did Justin cheat on Jessica Biel?

Justin Timberlake has been accused of having a fling with actress Olivia Munn last month, while still in a relationship with actress Jessica Biel.

An unnamed source told US magazine Us Weekly 29-year-old Justin and 30-year-old Olivia met at a MySpace event on September 26, 2010, and that Justin pursued her from there, culminating in two nights in a hotel, where they were said to be “openly affectionate”.

The source said Justin “has been telling people it’s over with Jessica, even though the reality is he’s just doing it behind her back”.

Justin’s representative has strongly denied the allegations while Olivia’s rep said they do not comment on their client’s personal life.

My loveless, sexless marriage

Family problems

Image source: Getty - posed by models

I want my child to see the love people share, but my wife has nothing to share with me. We have a 3 year old daughter who is all my soul but my wife has taken charge of her and my wife doesn’t need me now that she has her daughter to hug.

They sleep together in the spare bedroom, she says I move too much. She won’t let me care for her. She will redo anything I do for my child.

We are like flat mates but I pay the bills and still get yelled at. She says she likes me, not loves me.

I’m 49 years old, my wife 40, but she makes me feel like all my years of wisdom are a waste of knowledge and the mistakes I make are never forgiven. I’m not perfect. I have too much love to give to someone at this stage of life, lucky I have my god. I’ve given everything else.

Now I’m thinking of treating myself to a holiday to Thailand. She won’t care. More than likely she’ll tell my daughter Daddy is going away for good. Maybe I should?

You’re not just the person who pays the bills, but a father and husband and you need to take some definite decisions.

Does your wife want to stay married to you? If she does and is unable to offer any changes herself then counselling could help, especially with situations such as not being interested in sex, redoing anything you do for your child, or effectively cutting you out by sharing a bedroom with the child and leaving you alone.

Your child deserves to have two parents playing an equal role and affording each other the same respect and if your wife can recognise that or work towards it then you need to decide whether or not you can continue with your marriage like this.

If not, running off to Thailand is not the answer. Your daughter needs an assertive father and you can co-parent effectively, even if you are no longer a couple, but it is not good for her to be brought up in a home where parents are yelling at each other in a destructive atmosphere.

Stay very calm and drop the self pity – simply tell your wife what you’re unhappy about and don’t threaten her by saying you might go away for good – but have a clear plan in your mind and a positive approach and changes you could list which would help.

Ask her what sort of home life she wants and try and come to an agreement which reintroduces respect and communication so that you both know if the marriage is worth working for.

Cashing in on the high Aussie dollar

It's the news online shoppers and travellers have been waiting for, with the Aussie dollar almost on par with the US.
women with laptop on lounge, thinkstock

THE dollar reached a 27-year high of US$0.992, the highest since the dollar was first floated in 1983, which means buying in from the boys across the pond has never been cheaper.

Many commentators expect the new high to encourage a boom time for online shopping and travelling. Products such as clothes, books, beauty and electrical products are all flying off the shelves in the US and heading Down Under, as Money magazine’s Effie Zahos explains in the video above.

Specialty fashion products, such as larger-size shoes and clothes are often more readily available in the US with many online stores offering international shipping.

As with all online purchasing, be careful with the credit card you are using, it might help to have a card with a very low limit, check that the site is secure and also carefully read the returns policy before finalising the payment.

Your say: What are your favourite sites to buy from? Does an increase in the Aussie dollar tempt you to buy more online? Does the value of the dollar encouraged you to head to the US? Email us on [email protected]

Five fashion must haves for summer

Snapper

Snapper

Here at AWW.com.au HQ we are constantly asked “What fashion pieces should I bother picking up this season?” And what a good question. Inspiration for trends comes from runways the world over but it can be hard to identify which styles and pieces you should seek out.

We’ve done the hard work for you and enlisted the help of style blogger and all-round fashion expert Rosie Findlay (http://fashademic.blogspot.com) to help you sort the flash-in-the-pan fashion from the long-term style relationship for this summer. Here are the five pieces she says are worth dusting off the credit card for.

1. A well-cut straw hat

Whether it’s a fedora, boater or a snappy little trilby, there’s no better way to combine “sun-safe” and style.

2. Classic pale blue denim

If it’s good enough for Stella McCartney, it’s good enough for me! It will be everywhere. It is easiest to wear as a buttoned-down skirt that grazes the knee, a pair of well-cut high-waisted trousers or the ever classic denim jacket slung over a pretty dress.

3. A one-piece swimsuit

This universally flattering style is supportive for women with larger cup sizes. An unbeatable choice. For a different shape, try looking for a never-worn vintage one!

4. A straw basket- straw again!

But there’s a hankering for the carefree style of the ’70s, so channel Jane Birkin and sling one over your arm (or bike).

5. A pair of woven leather sandals

No, not gladiators. And no, definitely not made of rubber or plastic! Keep it chic, keep it simple. They’re comfortable and go with anything. I’m looking for something with a sturdy sole for walking, preferably handcrafted.

Your say: What pieces are you coveting this summer? What trends are you loving at the moment? Share your style tips with us below.

Cindy Crawford’s sexy secret to a successful marriage

Getty

It’s good to know that even supermodel Cindy Crawford makes an effort to keep her marriage alive and has concerns about ageing.

The 44-year-old recently revealed the secret to the spark in her marriage to husband Rande Gerber is attending secret pole dancing classes that take place in the dark, the UK’s Sunday Mirror reported.

“There are no steps to learn with pole-dancing and after having kids it’s great to re-tap into that sexuality and sensuality,” she said.

“The class is super-dark so you wouldn’t even recognise the woman next to you if she was next to you at the supermarket. You dance to music differently because you hear it differently. And my husband does not complain.”

In one of her most open and revealing interviews, Cindy also opened up about ageing and plastic surgery.

“I’ve tried Botox but I’m afraid of it. I don’t think injections should be used to change your face,” she said.

“I’m not a fan of fillers at all. If you’ve gone 35 or 40 years without big lips, I don’t think it’s time to start plumping them up artificially. I won’t say ‘no’ to plastic surgery. But, again, it scares me. If it changes how you look it’s a failure and you can’t take it back.”

The super-hot mother-of-two also revealed she had no idea how grey her hair was, because she has been dying her hair since she was 30, and if her kids want to eat ice-cream she often joins them.

“I’m not measuring myself to look the same as I did because if I did that would be deeply frustrating at best. I can’t cheat anymore — I’ve learned to fake it,” she said.

“With chocolate, you eat only dark. I never dieted but I’d go off white food for three days — no pasta, rice, sugar or flour. I’m running around with kids and volunteering at school. I can’t be bothered with complicated diets and weight plans.”

Greg Norman: I’m getting married again! But his daughter is furious

Greg Norman: I'm getting married again! But his daughter id furious

Just 12 months after divorcing Chris Evert, Greg Norman is set to wed his long-time lover. Her children already call him dad, but his own daughter is furious.

Aussie golf champion Greg Norman plans to marry the woman his family blames for the break up of his marriage to first wife Laura Andrassy – and then helped nurse his broken heart after his brief union with Chris Evert. Friends say the Great White Shark has never been happier than when he is with mother-of-two Kirsten Kutner, and is desperate to marry her and start over again with the attractive brunette.

“Greg plans to marry Kirsten,” confirms a family friend, speaking exclusively to Woman’s Day. “He began talking about marriage within six months of splitting with Chrissie [Evert] and we all wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t happen very soon.

“Greg has been obsessed with his image all his life and now that he has waited out a turbulent period – and the radar is clearing – he plans to propose to Kirsten.” This time round, close friends expect Greg, 55, and Kirsten, 41, to marry in a small ceremony rather than the sort of million-dollar extravaganza he put on for his second wedding to Chris. It would also save on embarrassment if his daughter Morgan, 27, was not in attendance.

She is the one obstacle to his happiness, refusing to even meet Kirsten, whom she blames for contributing to the break-up of her parent’s long and seemingly happy marriage.

As Woman’s Day revealed in a world exclusive, Greg started seeing Kirsten 15 years ago when he was still very much married to Laura. And he now thinks the time is right to formalise their relationship. Greg reveals he is “now in a very good place with Kirsten”, and their friends expect them to soon solidify their love, a union almost two decades in the making.

Guardian angel Patti Newton steps up

Guardian angel Patti steps up

With heartbroken mum Patti playing guardian angel to her disgraced son, Matthew Newton is slowly recovering from the breakdown that led to his attack on ex-fiancee Rachael Taylor.

Faces sombre, heads almost touching, Patti Newton and her troubled son share a quiet moment before embracing, both in tears, at the Sydney psychiatric clinic where Matthew is battling his demons.

Emotions run high as the disgraced actor finds strength from a new closeness with his mum, who has reached out to him in his worst of times. Patti has been secretly flying from Melbourne to take part in her son’s treatment and support his recovery from the depths of despair.

The 33-year-old, who has an AVO against him after allegedly assaulting ex-fiancee Rachael Taylor in Rome in August, was at rock bottom when he began therapy. But friends say Patti’s involvement has made all the difference to the fragile star, with doctors pronouncing him stable enough to venture briefly into the outside world on short trips to local shops.

“Matt on suicide watch had the whole family desperately worried, but that fear has lessened the more his mum has become involved. She is a loyal woman who would never give up on her child – and she’s proved that by wearing a path to his door,” says a friend of the famous family.

With TV veteran Bert resting at the family’s Melbourne home after finishing up an extended Sydney season of stage show Wicked, Patti, 65, has taken charge, becoming a frequent flyer to spend precious time with their son. The devoted mum is bravely shouldering the duty of turning Matthew’s focus forward, but the responsibility has taken its toll on her.

How do you think Patti has dealt with her son’s situation? Share your thoughts below.

Chrissie Swan and Matt Preston: We’ve lost 57 kilos!

Chrissie Swan and Matt Preston: We've lost 57 kilos!

The popular stars of The Circle and MasterChef  have waged a war on weight, and they’re both winning!

If you’d told Chrissie Swan six months ago she’d be wearing leggings on national TV, she’d have laughed in your face.

At a size 26, the 36-year-old radio and television personality was all too aware that when it came to dressing for her daily morning TV show, there were some things she just couldn’t do. And squeezing herself into a pair of tight leggings was certainly one of them.

“When I first started on The Circle, I had just come from radio, where you could turn up looking shocking and it wouldn’t matter,” she tells Woman’s Day during our exclusive chat. “Then, all of a sudden I was on camera, and I’m looking at myself thinking, ‘Oh my God! I’m dressed like a 60-year-old!’

“You just can’t get the kinds of clothes you want to wear at that size.” Fast forward six months and, thanks to Jenny Craig, Chrissie has added another 20kg to her total weight loss of almost 50kg. “I have actually lost 47 since I had the baby [Leo, born in November 2008]!” she marvels. “It’s unbelievable. It’s a person.”

And with another 20kg to go to reach her goal, she’s already revelling in her new shape, last week buying brand new size 20 jeans. “I’ve got lots of new clothes now, which is great,” she says with undisguised delight. “It’s so much fun – I’m wearing boots and leggings and things I love – instead of just things that fit. It’s fabulous.”
