Watching more than four hours of TV can lead to heart attacks

Getty

If you watch more than four hours of TV a day, be warned it could lead to heart attacks regardless of how much exercise you do, UK researchers have found.

Watching TV or playing video games for extended periods of time can increase your chances of heart disease and premature death research, the UK’s Daily Mail reported.

The research, conducted by the University College London’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, purports to be the first to examine the association between screen time and heart attacks.

Dr Emmanuel Stamatakis, who was involved in the research, said as little as two hours of screen time can have an effect.

“Our analysis suggests that two or more hours of screen time each day may place someone at greater risk for a cardiac event,” he said.

The study also found that those who spend more than four hours a day in front of the TV increased their risk by about 125 percent.

She said the reason for the increased risk could be to do with the effect prolonged sitting has on cholesterol and inflammation.

The results, which are published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found that factors such as smoking, socioeconomic class and even exercise were not relevant.

“These risks may not be mitigated by exercise, a finding that underscores the urgent need for public health recommendations,” Dr Stamatakis said.

TomKat to snub the Oscars?

Tom Cruise and wife Katie Holmes are not planning to attend the Oscars this year after this year’s co-host, Anne Hathaway, made fun of Katie in a skit on Saturday Night Live late last year.

“Anne didn’t even warn her it was going to be on TV. The whole thing has left a sour taste with Tom,” an unnamed source told the UK’s Mail On Sunday.

But a spokesperson for Tom has told website PopEater that it is “not true and made up” and that the pair had no plans of attending the Oscars before Hathaway’s skit.

Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is expecting her fourth child with her football star husband, David Beckham.

The couple’s three sons, 11-year-old Brooklyn, eight-year-old Romeo and five-year-old Cruz, are said to be “very excited” about the family’s new arrival.

David Beckham confirmed the news in a message on his Facebook fan page this morning.

“I’ve got some great news to tell you all,” he wrote. “Victoria and I are expecting our fourth child this summer. The boys are very excited about the arrival of a new brother or sister.”

A spokeswoman for 36-year-old Victoria also confirmed the news, but did not say how far along she was or when her specific due date is.

The couple, who currently live in Los Angeles, have said they are hoping for a girl.

“Maybe one day another baby,” Victoria said in the February edition of the UK’s Vogue as she spoke about her desire to have a baby girl.

“But at this stage I think the chances of a girl are quite slim.”

True Confessions Agony Aunt: How do I tell my husband I want out?

Woman suffering

Image: Getty, posed by models

I have been with John for 7 years and we have 3 wonderful kids together. Over the past few months I have come to realise that I am not in love with him anymore.

Just recently I told him it was over and deep down I have fallen for someone else. I never thought this would happen to me. I always imagined that John and I would be together forever.

Sadly we have grown apart, and yes we have tried to bring back that flame, he’ s being so good about it all, he wants to take me on a trip, but unfortunately he has made me stop seeing my friend who is the sister of the guy I like – Luke.

Since I haven’t spoken to them I feel really depressed, lonely and it’s breaking my heart. How can I break up with him, so I can be happy again? Our 3 kids love Luke. He talks to them, he actually listens, unlike their father.

What makes all this worse is that my parents are on John’s side. I can’t live in a loveless relationship. I can’t live like this forever, lonely and heartbroken.

At first I thought it was just a phase, so I stayed away from everyone for a week but my heart still wants what it wants. Please tell me how I can get John to understand it just isn’t going to work and I want out?

I’m in love with Luke and staying away from him and his sister is breaking me to pieces as his sister has been my best friend for 12 years. What do I do?

John is the father of your children and will always be in their lives and also yours, so you owe it to them to try and sort things out with John before you get carried away with the romantic notion of being with Luke.

You may not mean to, but you are coming across as thinking only of your happiness, not that of your family – your letter is all about how you can be happy again, how you are breaking in pieces, how lonely and heartbroken you are.

Your children must all be under seven, which is very young and very fragile to be placed second to your desires. It doesn’t matter how good Luke is with them. He isn’t their father and while it can be very tragic and romantic to feel like a star crossed lover, you’re a mother first and you need to live up to that.

Forget about Luke and his sister for the moment and think instead about giving your family life another chance. If it seems hard, give yourself a time period of three or six months at which point you can reassess the future, but only if you can honestly say you’ve tried whole heartedly to sort out the problems in your original relationship. For your children’s sake, even then do not consider going to live with Luke. Put them first and base all your decisions on that.

Princess Mary welcomes a boy and girl!

Getty

Princess Mary and Prince Frederik have welcomed twins, a boy and a girl, into their royal family.

“Both mother and children are doing well and we are very happy,” Prince Frederik said.

Princess Mary first welcomed the couple’s son, born at 10.30am on Saturday (about 8.30pm Sydney time) weighing 2.7 kilograms followed by their daughter at 10.56am weighing 2.5 kilograms. Both children were born naturally.

A teary eyed Prince Frederik said at a press conference in Denmark that both Princess Mary and their new born babies, calling them the “double trouble”, are healthy and well.

“How surreal the birth seemed to be. First you are gifted with a healthy baby and half an hour later there’s a second one. One for each hand,” he said.

“Obviously when there are two hearts and two minds involved you take every precaution you can.”

Prince Frederik was by his wife’s side at Rigshospitalet hospital throughout the birth and even cut the umbilical cords when the twins were born.

“The progress has been just as exciting – almost as if it was the first time I had to be a dad,” Prince Frederik said of the birth.

When asked about the babies names he joked that the boy would be called Elvis, as it is The King’s birthday.

He also said that he, Mary and the Queen have known about sexes “for some time”.

Prince Frederik’s father Prince Henrik, who loves children and couldn’t wait for the arrival of the twins, was the first to pay the new Royal additions a visit.

Prince Frederik had called him at 7am on Saturday, when Princess Mary went into labour.

When asked if he was looking forward to babysitting four grandchildren he replied with a smile “do you really think I am babysitting?”.

Princess Mary was admitted to Rigshospitalet hospital at 7am today.

A Woman’s Day Copenhagen correspondent said that Prince Frederik drove his wife to the hospital after taking their daughter Princess Isabella, to a friends house to be looked after.

On Friday night, Danish newspapers reported that Crown Prince Frederik had been seen arriving at the Rigshospitalet hospital in his red Saab at around 6pm where he was greeted by Mary’s doctor Peter Haam.

But Amalienborg Palace spokeswoman Lene Balleby said the trip was for one of the Tasmanian-born Princess’s final check-ups before giving birth.

“It was a check-up and they are home now”, she told Danish newspaper BT.

“The birth will take time some time during January, there is not much else to say. Babies come when they come.”

But the birth of the royal couple’s twins happened sooner rather than later.

Thankfully Prince Frederik’s royal calendar changed straight after the check-up.

He was supposed to attend an event at the State Museum of Art on January 13, but the event has now been erased from his calendar.

Miranda Kerr welcomes a baby boy!

Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom split

Australian super model Miranda Kerr and her Hollywood actor husband Orlando Bloom have welcomed their first child a baby boy, according to reports.

Website X17 reports that the 27-year-old Victoria’s Secret model went into labour on Friday morning in Los Angeles.

The website’s photographer claims to have heard her husband bragging about “his son”.

Despite giving birth in the US the couple, who married in July last year, have made it clear that their baby will be “Aussie through and through”.

Miranda’s parents flew to the US last week to be with their daughter and welcome their first grandchild.

Last week rumours that the couple were expecting a boy were circulating after Kerr was spotted shopping for boys clothes in LA. In the months leading up to her child’s birth the new mum had been tweeting about her growing belly and organising a nursery.

“My belly is getting so much bigger. Can’t wait to see our little one for the first time” she tweeted.

How to give your teenage daughter a positive body image

Thinkstock

Thinkstock

With society’s idealised image of beauty a painfully thin size zero, it has never been more important to ensure that your teenage daughter has a healthy body image and does not lean toward self-harm as she aspires to conform.

Award-winning educator Dannielle Miller, CEO of Enlighten Education, asks, “What conversations aren’t we having with our daughters? This is woman’s work.” Dannielle and the Enlighten team go out to schools all across Australia and New Zealand, initiating real conversations on self-esteem and body image with 20,000 teenage girls every year.

“As women we live in strange times,” Miller says. “It is so easy to feel that we’ve fought all the battles, but the ultimate glass ceiling is our bathroom mirror and we have not cracked that. I believe that the pressures around women to look perfect have increased and it’s crippling us. Our best, brightest women are constantly engaged in plastic surgery and trying to literally make themselves smaller and take up less space.”

In her book, The Butterfly Effect, Miller explains the intricacies of 21st century “Girl World” to mums and dads, and provides an action plan to help put a stop to your daughter’s inner battle with her body, and help her to find peace and self acceptance.

  1. Be a good role model. “There is a lot of research that shows girls are mostly influenced by their mothers,” Miller says. “Teen girls say to me: ‘I’ve never known my mum not to be on a diet.’ Girls get a very mixed message when Mum says, ‘Darling you’re gorgeous. If I looked like you I’d be happy.’ What we have to do for our daughters is to show them that we love ourselves. This is important business. It’s not just about healing us; it’s about healing our daughters.”

  2. Miller suggests broadening what you daughter values within herself by telling her you love her for who she is, not just how she looks. For example, tell them they’re beautiful and smart, funny, kind-hearted, passionate, strong, brave and so on.

  3. If your daughter is overweight, don’t focus the conversation on changing her body shape or parts of her body, focus on encouraging a healthy diet, fitness and involvement in sport.

  4. Empathise. Don’t trivialise her concerns about the way she looks, as they are very real to her. Be kind and encourage her to be kind to others.

  5. Watch for early warning signs of a serious body image crisis, including dramatic weight loss, constant dieting, excessive exercising, social withdrawal, a fixation with food, change in appetite (refusing or bingeing) and insomnia.

  6. Help you daughter navigate the media. The media plays a key role in the objectification of women. Pay attention to what your daughter reads, watches and listens to. There are some recommended resources in The Butterfly Effect. In pictures: eight easy ways to boost your confidence

  7. Encourage your daughter to appreciate her body. Women’s bodies are amazing. Instead of critiquing yourself, focus on the positive aspects and give them a new emphasis.

  8. Start a detox diary together (contrary to popular belief the body is not toxic, but the mind may be) where you both can celebrate what you like about your bodies with quotes, photos, affirmations and cut-outs of positive role models. “Girls love that,” Miller says.

  9. Remind your daughter to see herself as a whole person. We are more than just our breasts, our butts and our thighs. When we see ourselves as just bodies we forget that we are somebodies.

  10. Ask your daughter to use affirmations and repeat them every day, such as, “I am more than my body. I am my heart, soul and mind. My body is strong, unique and beautiful.”

Kate Ceberano: I love my curves!

Kate Ceberano: I love my curves!

She celebrates her body now, but there was a time the singer didn’t feel quite as bikini-ready.

The wind is picking up, the clouds are getting more ominous by the minute and there’s a chill in the air that’s hard to ignore. It’s anything but a sunny summer’s day in famously unpredictable Melbourne. But at 44 and glowing in a floral bikini, bubbly songstress Kate Ceberano doesn’t seem the least bit fussed about posing poolside in next to nothing.

“I don’t even notice the cold,” she says, grinning at the shivering Woman’s Day crew. “Maybe I’m built for endurance.”

“Kate’s such a trouper,” whispers her assistant. “She’s consistently professional and never complains, no matter what the weather is or what she’s wearing.” Indeed, looking truly fit and fabulous, Kate – a devoted mum to six-year-old daughter Gypsy – admits very little fazes her these days.

“I’ve become fearless about a lot of things in life,” she reflects. “But what I really am is fearless about getting involved in things, from eating beautiful food to swimming. There are people who find it difficult to experience those things because they’ve become self-conscious, but not me. I’m not going to live like that.”

Kate’s philosophy, she reveals, is “a little of what you fancy does you good”. “I’m comfortable with myself as a person,” she adds. “My body has become something that I can work through and something people can recognise me by, but I don’t add any more significance to it than that. I hope it looks like a fun, working body.

Beauty tips for achieving physical balance

Thinkstock

Thinkstock

The secret to overall wellness and beauty is down to achieving homeostasis, a balance of alkalis and acids in the body. Monique Bolland, owner of Sydney’s Alkaline Spa and Clinic reveals to Anna Warwick all you need to know to glow inside and out.

The magic of pH balance

For optimum health our bodies need to maintain a slightly alkaline state. This is the opposite of an acidic, or toxic, state.

In modern society, our levels of acidity are dramatically increased through excessive stress, poor eating habits and environmental toxins that we ingest every day, through the food we eat and the air we breathe.

Related: make peace with yourself using Ayurveda

This acidic state is ideal for the fermentation of yeast and the incubation of bacteria, parasites and disease. But it’s far from ideal for your health. Common signs of this toxic acidity include weight gain, fatigue, digestive disorders and the outward signs of ageing. By helping our bodies eliminate acidic toxins and increase alkalinity on a regular basis, we take enormous strain off our organs and immune systems, and help them to do what they do best: concentrate on building health, strength and vitality.

If you’re healthy and alkaline on the inside, you’ll see the results on the outside. So you must look after the physical state of health your body at a cellular level. Your skin will glow, eyes will sparkle, hair will shine, and you’ll radiate energy and wellbeing.

Regular detoxing

Regular detoxing is the best way to achieve optimal inner and outer health. When we stop consuming new toxins, we allow the body to properly eliminate everything that’s built up. Avoid foods that cause acidity, such as animal products (meat and dairy), sugar, processed foods, alcohol and caffeine.

Keep it up

There’s very little point in doing a big detox and depriving yourself of all the things you love for a week, only to overindulge for two days afterwards, then go back to life as it was. You need to maintain your new level of health by doing little things to help your body detox on a regular basis.

Help your body to stay on top of the modern-day toxic overload by following these simple tips.

  • Start your day with a squeeze of lemon in a glass of hot water.

  • Drink alkaline water (with a pH of 8.0 or higher). This is rich in essential buffer minerals which help neutralise acid.

  • Dry brush your skin or use salt scrubs to clear off dead skin cells, allowing clear pathways for skin elimination.

  • Use skin products that are as natural and nourishing as possible.

  • Get plenty of rest and relaxation to reduce stress, which reduces toxic build-up.

Clinical treatments

The following treatments aim to assist the body’s natural pathways of detoxification; taking excess strain off organs and systems and allowing the body to bring itself back into balance.

  • Naturopathy assists through diet and lifestyle changes, implementing personalised detox programs, supporting the organs with herbs and supplements when needed.

  • Infrared wraps and detox saunas increase circulation and aid skin elimination.

  • Colon hydrotherapy is used to cleanse built-up toxins from the bowel. Un-eliminated waste in the bowel means toxins are reabsorbed into the bloodstream and must be recirculated and “cleaned” again by the liver. Keeping the colon functioning means the liver can focus on filtering new waste rather than old.In pictures: Oprah’s five life lessons

  • Endermologie clears blockages and assists flow in the lymphatic and venous circulation systems.

  • Natural skincare products put on the skin are absorbed into the bloodstream. Products that are natural rather than heavily chemical will help decrease toxic load in the body.

  • Massage and spa treatments to reduce stress levels.
