Prince William and Catherine Middleton had the world transfixed when they married in London’s Westminster Abbey in April.

Five weeks later, the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are still making headlines and this month feature on the cover of the June issues of The Australian Women’s Weekly and the British and US editions of Vanity Fair.

Both cover images were taken by iconic photographer Mario Testino, who was a friend of William’s late mother Diana, Princess of Wales. Testino took the couple’s official engagement pictures and the image that appeared in their official wedding program.

The June issue of The Weekly goes on sale on June 3, with a cover story about Catherine, our future queen.

Your chance to own a piece of royal history

Catherine Middleton portrait auction

Catherine by Robert Hannaford

She is destined to be the next Catherine the Great. The Weekly celebrates Catherine’s new life as the Duchess of Cambridge by commissioning this portrait by award-winning Australian painter Robert Hannaford.

The artist captures Catherine’s ‘character and humanity’ in this remarkable portrait, which The Weekly is auctioning.

All proceeds go to the Royal Flying Doctor Service — the only Australian charity nominated by Catherine and Prince William to receive donations, in lieu of wedding gifts.

Today, Prince William and his new wife, a middle-class girl from a commuter village, 45 minutes drive from London, are being hailed as the future of the monarchy. Yet who is this young woman who will one day be crowned and how will she fare as a future queen?

While royal protocol dictates that we will have King Charles and possibly Queen Camilla before King William and Queen Catherine, the latter reign is likely to be both the longest and the more effective. Unsurprisingly, polls ahead of the royal wedding showed the majority of Britons are in favour of Charles abdicating and handing the crown to his son.

Queen Elizabeth II, however, has vowed to serve until she dies and the crown will pass, according to the order of succession, to Charles. For the time being, it means William, an RAF search-and-rescue pilot, and Catherine can enjoy their lives in relative peace and privacy.

The couple has returned from their honeymoon to their home on the Welsh island of Anglesey and made it clear they want life to return to normal now that the excitement around their wedding has calmed down.

Catherine still does the weekly grocery shop — just days after her wedding, she was spotted stocking up at a local supermarket — and they have turned down Prince Charles’ offer for a team of aides, preferring instead to carry out chores themselves.

Yet, inevitably, it will be a journey that at times will seem daunting and Catherine will be dependent on her naturally warm nature and ready smile.

Why you should switch to a natural fragrance

Why you should switch to a natural fragrance

Swapping your regular perfume for a naturally-derived fragrance can deliver more than just a beautiful scent. Formulated with pure essential oils, they can offer holistic wellbeing too, writes Shonagh Walker.

Drawing from the age-old traditions of aromatherapy, natural perfumes are attractive for a range of reasons. As well as offering a pretty scent, they actually have the ability to improve and nurture our entire wellbeing, uplifting, calming, grounding or energising, depending on the blend you choose to wear.

In pictures: Bizarre beauty treatments

“Natural perfumes work with the body to promote a better sense of wellbeing,” says Natalie Van Epen from fragrance house The Little Alchemist.

“They can be used to enhance or alter our moods. For example, pink lotus smells wonderful, but it also soothes, calms and de-stresses. White tea is useful for helping with mild anxiety, depression and nervous tension, as well as pre-menstrual tension.”

With the very essence of the botanicals used in their purest form, it is little wonder that these sumptuous fragrances help to enhance our state of mind.

“It’s the beauty of Mother Nature in that vial of fragrance,” adds Narelle Chenery, co-creator of Miessence skin care and fragrance.

“By using the pure, natural ingredients, our bodies benefit from a holistic experience of mind, body and spirit.”

Pampering application

Natural fragrances should be worn exactly as you would your regular fragrance, however to get the most out of them, Narelle suggests making application an indulgent ritual.

“Dab these oil-based fragrances between your breasts, in the crease of your elbow, at the nape of your neck, behind your ears … the experience in itself is relaxing, and on top of that you receive the physical benefits of aromatherapy and the essential oils.”

Take the time to repeat daily affirmations while applying your scent in this way. You may have an affirmation for confidence, for patience, for motivation or for self-esteem — whatever it is, taking a few minutes to repeat your affirmation while applying your fragrance will create a more meditative experience. Furthermore, as you smell the scent throughout the day, you will be reminded of your goals.

Chemistry lesson

Because of their botanical formula, these fragrances tend to wear better.

“The body finds it easier to interact with natural substances,” explains Salvatore Battaglia from fragrance specialists Perfect Potion. “They mimic our own pheromones, which play an important sensual role in our body.”

It’s this kinship too that adds another dimension to natural fragrances – their ability to be unique to the individual.

“They evolve with the wearer’s body chemistry,” explains Narelle. “As such, they will smell uniquely different on each wearer.”

Top tips for fragrance

  • Keep your fragrances stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, preferably in the dark. Exposure to sunlight, or warm, humid conditions can cause the scent to degrade.

  • Apply fragrance to pulse points for maximum impact — behind the ears, the wrists, behind the knees. Your blood flow will warm the area and encourage the scent to radiate.

  • Fragrance wears and smells its best when applied to a warm body, ideally just after you’ve had a shower or bath, before getting dressed. Don’t apply it to your clothes. It needs to react with your skin to be the truest representation of the notes used in its blend.

Octomom’s fertility doctor has license revoked

Octomum's fertility doctor has license revoked

The doctor responsible for helping Nadya “Octomom” Suleman to give birth to 14 children has had his license revoked.

Dr Michael Kamrava, who gave Nadya repeated in-vitro treatments, admitted to implanting the now 34-year-old mother with 12 embryos in 2008 — six times the normal number for women her age, the UK’s Daily Mail reported.

Nadya now has two-year-old octuplets, six boys and two girls, as well as six other children who were also conceived through IVF.

During the investigation into his practice, Dr Kamrava was accused of being grossly negligent not only with Nadya but two other women. One of those women was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer after receiving fertility treatment from him and another suffered serious complications after she became pregnant with quadruplets.

The Medical Board of California said it had moved to “protect the public” stating that Dr Kamrava’s license will officially be revoked on July 1, 2011.

Dr Kamrava’s lawyer argued that Nadya had failed to follow through with terminating an excessive number of foetuses. His attempts failed but the board concluded it was not the responsibility of the patient.

The investigation into Dr Kamrava’s practice began not long after Nadya’s octuplets were born in January 2009.

A new reason to skip salt

A new reason to skip salt

politics,julia gillard,kevin rudd

On average, Australian adults consume between 8g and 12g of salt daily, which is twice the 6g daily that the National Health & Medical Research Council suggests, and high salt intake is a leading risk factor for people with hypertension.

But if you think you don’t need to worry until your blood pressure starts to go up, think again.

In pictures: Ten hidden causes of food poisoning

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found that eating too much salt puts you at risk of stroke, heart disease and kidney failure — even if you are fit and healthy and your blood pressure is normal.

And before you bin obviously high-salt foods, such as anchovies and fish sauce, note that ordinary foods — cereals, processed meats and cheeses, and even bread — are also possible suspects.

Remember to read food labels. Foods that contain less than 120mg of sodium per 100g are generally regarded as low-salt; those with 500mg or more are high-salt foods.

The new cold-buster

The new cold-buster

Vitamin C? Check. Echinacea? Check. What else should you be taking to keep colds and flu at bay this winter?

A study of more than 1000 people published in Pharmacological Research found that taking supplements of up to 1000mg of quercetin (a flavonoid found naturally in onions, garlic, apples, green and black tea, red grapes, citrus fruit, broccoli, berries, and leafy greens) was associated with a significant reduction in the number of sick days taken due to respiratory tract infections.

Those people taking the supplements also reported that their symptoms were less severe and did not last as long.

As well as having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, the researchers said quercetin has unique antiviral effects that play a role in its cold-fighting ability.

Kate Winslet has revealed how royal photographer Mario Testino convinced her to strip off for a recent photo shoot.

The 35-year-old actress has posed nude several times in her career, but dislikes it because she is insecure about her body. When Mario asked her to bare all late last year, Kate says she just couldn’t say no.

“You know that his biggest strength without fail is making women look beautiful,” Kate said as she presented the renowned photographer with a lifetime achievement award at the El Museo del Barrio gala in New York City last week.

“When Mario turns to you and says, ‘It’s beautiful, but I think it would work better naked, no?’ How can one refuse?”

Kate has spoken extensively of her body image issues in the past. She says she spends most of her time in front of the camera thinking about her flaws — but Mario has the power to make all her anxiety melt away.

“No matter what insecurities about oneself a subject may have, Mario makes them go away like a magician,” Kate told the audience.

“One moment you are in the hair and makeup chair fully-clothed and wishing you had smoother skin, longer legs and smaller feet and then Mario comes in and in that charming way he takes you by the hand and says, ‘Don’t worry it’s going to be amazing.'”

Mario’s naked photographs of Kate will appear in his Todo o Nada exhibition, which will open in Rome in July. The photographer, who took Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s recent engagement pictures, was thrilled to accept the award from Kate, and spoke about why he thinks famous women are happy to disrobe for him.

“I said to her, I want you to pose nude for this exhibition,” Mario said of Kate. “And she was like, ‘Oh, OK, Mario.’ She said yes right away. Most of them I think trust me. I would never let them down.”

Kylie Minogue comes to town

Kylie Minogue comes to town

Kylie Minogue launches her Australian tour in Brisbane today

The Weekly’s Associate Editor Bryce Corbett reports from Kylie Minogue’s press conference in Brisbane.

For someone so small, the logistics of getting Kylie Minogue from Point A to Point B are formidable.

The diminutive singer alighted on home soil and fronted the press today to kick off the Australian leg of her celebrated “Aphrodite — Les Folies” world tour.

Standing before assembled members of the media in the cavernous surrounds of an empty Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Kylie declared she was happy to be home — albeit a little nervous.

“I’m always a little more nervous performing to a home crowd,” she said. “But I’m so happy to be back on home turf.”

In the past couple of weeks, seventeen containers and an entire planeload of Kylie concert-inspired freight has been making its way to Australia. One hundred crew-members, 200 costumes — many borrowed from the Paris cabaret “Le Lido” and others hand-crafted by her designers du choix, Dolce e Gabbana — a 250 tonne stage incorporating 16 industrial-strength water pumps and 25 dancers and musicians have accompanied Kylie to Australia to put on a $25 million show that has been hailed by critics as “pure entertainment”.

“The audience response has been so incredible, so joyful and uplifting,” Kylie said.

To questions about her longevity as a pop princess, Kylie said she felt she had matured as an artist.

“I have discovered a new dimension to my life as a performer. In many ways, I have just decided to let go and do it.”

Her Brisbane concert on Friday will be the 57th show on this world tour and will kick off a national circuit that will also take in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The schedule to date has been — and will continue to be — a grueling one. The question then, is how much longer does the fresh-faced 43-year old and breast cancer survivor think she can keep it up?

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “I really don’t know. Some of my idols like Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton are both ladies of a certain age. I would like to think that if I still had the inspiration to do what I wanted to do (I would be able to emulate them), that would be great.”

And then finally, before disappearing back into the bowels of the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and being swallowed up by the impressive machinery of her hi-tech set, Kylie paid careful attention at the end of the press conference to hose down rumours her sister, Dannii and her partner Kris Smith were in the midst of a relationship wobble.

“I spoke to her (Dannii) yesterday,” Kylie said. “She said to me: ‘We are happy together and we are home,’ Kylie said. “I would like to think the attention they are getting is because they are a family unit and people love to see them together.”

Key tips for revamping your winter wardrobe

Key tips for revamping your winter wardrobe

The weather is getting colder and once again, we have nothing to wear – but this year looking great doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Westfield stylist Jo Blankfield says this season’s new trends are not only easy to incorporate into your wardrobe – they also compliment last year’s trends.

Her first piece of advice? Forget the little black dress. This year it is all about the little navy dress. She promises it will be a key piece in your winter wardrobe. “Black is often a dominant winter colour, but what is really refreshing is that we are seeing a lot of navy coming through,” Jo said.

“There are a lot of people who shouldn’t be wearing black for their colour palate and navy is just a bit nicer and warmer.

“It’s all about looking at the undertones of people’s skin. When some people put black on it can bring out grey undertones in their face. Navy makes them look a bit warmer.”

Here are the five key trends you can’t live without this season.

Burgundy

Berry tones, including burgundy and plums, are the colours to be seen in. Whether it is a boot or a pair of jeans, it’s one colour that you need to incorporate into your winter colour palette.

“Burgundy is one of your practical colours. It has that warmth like that blue denim that you would often wear and it goes with a lot of the winter tones that we generally wear,” Jo said. So don’t be afraid to pick yourself up some burgundy jeans.

Pattern clashes

There has always been an unspoken rule that dictated you only wear one pattern at a time, but that has been banished. Pattern clashing is big and involves teaming big and bold prints, that you may already have tucked away in your wardrobe, together.

As well as bold combinations, Jo says prints can be teamed up more subtley by adding a printed scarf to an outfit.

60s style

Jo has seen a lot of 60s styled dresses in stores. She says this is a great style to take you from corporate to casual – depending on what you team the dress up with. This style is very ladylike and can be teamed with a pair patterned tights from last winter’s wardrobe.

Metallic and shimmer/shine

Jo says that while metallics have been seen as a good night option for quite some time, they are now being introduced as day winter wear. This includes knits, shimmer jeans, jackets and even shoes.

Leather and lace

This combination was well and truly a trend last year and we are happy to report it has made a comeback this season. Jo says that both leather pants and a leather jacket are great options.

How to add these trends to your existing winter wardrobe

Now that you have the trends covered, here is how to add them to the winter pieces already hanging in your closet.

Jo says anything leather or lace from last season is great to team up with a burgundy boot or scarf. Also, if you have a fur vest from last year, bring it out again – it is still a dominant winter piece. So what’s the most essential winter piece to have hanging in your closet?

“It will always be a winter boot, that is a key piece,” Jo said.

“It is definitely wise to invest in a really good pair of winter boots because they are something practical, yet fashionable, that you can feel comfortable in.

“If you’re worried about the amount you are spending think about the number of wears you get out of that spend. That’s a good indicator on what you should spend on a particular piece.”

Brad’s a ‘real man’ says Angelina

Getty

It seems Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are still celebrating the spark in their relationship after raising six children in six years together, well at least Angelina is.

The 36-year-old revealed how lucky she is to have Brad in her life in an interview with the UK’s Daily Telegraph.

“I am very lucky with Brad,” she said. “He is a real gentleman, but he is also a real man’s man.

“He’s got the wonderful balance of being an extraordinary, great, loving father, a very, very intelligent man and physically he’s a real man … in all things that it means.”

But apart from the fact that Brad is a “real man” Jolie also revealed she loves the natural emotion that surrounds their relationship.

“I love being a woman,” she said. “I love that I can have children. I love feeling soft, I love being with Brad, I love all the sensitivity and natural emotion.”

With 47-year-old Brad talking more about marriage recently saying that the pair’s children have been asking about marriage, Jolie revealed how she feels about tying the knot.

“We are obviously extremely committed to the children and as parents together,” she said.

And although a Brangelina wedding maybe on the cards, it’s clear Ange’s main focus is on her six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne.

“When Brad and I decided to have a large family we decided we’d only do it if we could be really hands-on and take the kids with us, seeing them every day,” she explained.

“I am always there on weekends, I only ever work a five-day week, and I am often there for breakfast or dinner. When I’m working they come up at lunch.”
