Kate’s style goes from drab to fab

Kate's style goes from drab to fab

A selection of the Duchess of Cambridge's outfits on her Canadian visit

The Weekly’s Market Editor Olivia Fleming on Catherine’s transformation from dull to dashing in just a few weeks.

When I was a little girl, dreaming of becoming a princess revolved solely around images of me in sartorial heaven.

I didn’t care about the prince, the castle, or even the fairy godmother. For me it was all about the beautiful gowns — romantic and ethereal dresses to float through doors in, spin around dance floors in and run down grand palace stairs in. The shoes! The jewellery! Oh the wardrobe I would have.

In pictures: Love is in the heir for Kate and William in Canada

Evidently it seems Catherine Middleton had a similar, albeit more demure, idea in mind. While her pre-princess wardrobe was drab at the best of times, post-princess she seems to be turning into a modern day Grace Kelly at lightning speed.

One week into her nine-day whirlwind royal tour of Canada, it’s obvious Kate has found a style that suits her lithe figure. Taking fashion cues from the world’s most effortlessly chic First Ladies (think Jackie Kennedy and her 50’s dresses, big sunglasses and Chanel suits, Michelle Obama and her short sleeve ensembles in bright colourful prints, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and her below-the-knee, slim-fitting Dior dresses with kitten heels), Kate is making her own style her signature in both an alluring and demurely ‘appropriate’ way.

Gravitating towards shift dresses with a three-quarter sleeve and hemlines that always fall just above the knee, elegant high-heel pumps, skinny capri pants, loafers and tailored jackets, she has put an intelligently polished wardrobe together, cleverly mixing high-end British designers like Alexander McQueen, Burberry and Erdem with easily accessible Zara and Reiss pieces for her most die-hard fans.

While it would be nice to see her take some fashion risks, away from the mostly safe there-goes-Kate-in-another-nice-dress versions we have seen so far, she has undoubtedly proven she can hold her own in the fashion world — especially when the stakes are so high and the possibilities for a faux pas are even higher.

Prince William, who is the president of the British Academy of Film and Television, has also invited more than 250 guests including Hollywood film executives and industry figures to the event.

And although the pair have a packed schedule for their visit, LA locals including Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton and Jane Seymour have told E Online where they think the royal couple should visit during their short trip.

“[They should go to] the Beverly Hills Hotel Polo Lounge because it’s private,” Paris Hilton suggested. “And they won’t be bothered with paparazzi outside like you would at the Ivy or something.”

Oprah to teach at South African school

Oprah to teach at South African school

Oprah at the opening of her South African school in 2007.

Former daytime talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has found a new way to offer inspiration to people, by signing up to teach a high school class in South Africa.

The class, called It’s Life 101, will be taught to school girls at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, the school that Oprah opened in 2007 and recently visited.

Upon returning to the US, Oprah emailed some of her fans about the trip and her future plans.

“They were all stressed for tests, but doing fine,” she wrote. “No major crisis this trip. I love being with them and talking to them about all things important. When I’m there I’m talking from the time I get up till I go to bed, about everything teenage girls are going through. It’s the same all over the world.”

And when it comes to teaching, it seems that Oprah can’t wait.

“Should be fun since I love to teach,” she wrote. “And they’re like sponges. Like 12th graders everywhere, this first class is both anxious and excited about going to college.

“Most will be the first in their family [to go to college]. So it’s a very big deal for them, and they’re feeling the pressure.”

While teaching, Oprah will continue to run her TV channel, OWN.

Keep active for good health

Keep active for good health

Think your 30-minute gym session is all you need for optimal health? Think again says exercise physiologist Caitlin Reid.

It’s safe to say that most of us are familiar with the health guideline of getting at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each day. But many of us don’t realise this is just one aspect of our national physical activity guidelines.

According to the federal Department of Health and Ageing’s National Physical Activity Guidelines for Australians, the minimum level of physical activity required for good health includes four points:

  1. Think of movement as an opportunity not an inconvenience.

  2. Be active every day in as many ways as you can.

  3. Put together at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days.

  4. If you can, also enjoy some regular vigorous exercise for extra health and fitness benefits.

According to these guidelines, sedentary lifestyles with only 30 minutes of movement a day aren’t enough to keep us healthy. For better health and optimal weight loss, we need to move as often as we can.

A growing body of research is supporting this claim, with recent studies finding a daily 30-minute exercise session not being enough to combat the damaging effects that being sedentary for the remainder of the day has on our waistlines, blood pressure, blood cholesterol levels and blood glucose levels.

Prolonged, unbroken periods of immobilised muscle as seen when sitting for extended periods of time reduces the ability of lipoproteins to (substances carrying cholesterol in our blood) to efficiently manage healthy blood cholesterol levels. These findings have even been found in people who report being physically active (exercising for a minimum of 150 minutes per week).

Australian researchers have found that the more hours people spent watching television, even if they were meeting the exercise guidelines, the higher their waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose levels and triglyceride levels were.

The consequences of prolonged sitting have also been illustrated in the Canadian Fitness Survey, which found people who spent the majority of the day sitting had a significantly poorer long-term mortality rate, even if they were deemed to be “physically active”.

Before you go thinking that your exercise sessions are pointless, there is a simple solution.

The research also found that by simply breaking up your sedentary time improves waistline, body mass index, blood pressure levels, blood cholesterol levels and blood glucose levels, irrespective of the amount of exercise you do.

So for optimal health, try these simple changes:

  • Keep up at least 30 minutes of exercise daily.

  • Make sure you stand more, sit less and move often throughout the whole day.

  • Think of movement as an opportunity for better health rather than an inconvenience.

  • Every hour stand up from your desk and walk to the photocopier, water cooler or to see a colleague.

In fact, now you’ve finished this article, stand up and stretch your legs. It’s that simple!

How to change your bad habits for good

How to change your bad habits for good

Lifestyle changes can make a positive difference to our lives, but we’ve all been guilty of making a conscious effort to eat healthier or exercise more before returning to old habits a few weeks later.

It is admirable to have the motivation to start to make these changes but the real success lies in making these changes for life.

In pictures: Gym habits that are holding you back

How can we make the plan for this year a success, resulting in long-term lifestyle changes?

The key is to make each goal or “resolution”, a habit — part of your everyday existence. Eventually your plans will not be given a second thought and you will be less likely to “fail” in your campaign.

Are you ready? Ask yourself “am I ready to make these changes now?” If you are not ready then forming a life habit will be difficult. Instead, look at why you are not ready and make overcoming this as your first goal. Think what an achievement that will be!

Consider your goals in a positive light: So often we think of things that we need to stop doing, such as eating chocolate or overspending on the credit card. It is much nicer to think of our new habits as something we can actually start doing to help us achieve our goals. Instead of saying “I will stop eating so much chocolate”, you could say “I will start to enjoy a chocolate treat only once per week”. You are sure to feel less deprived if you take this approach. Allowing a little leniency will make any life transitions easier.

Put pen to paper: Write down your goals in a step-by-step plan of action and ask a close friend to help monitor your progress. Changes are more likely to happen if you have a network of support.

Learn from your mistakes: But don’t dwell on them — keep moving forward. Keep the feeling of success of reaching your ultimate goal in the back of your mind as you get closer and closer.

Be patient: Lifestyle changes do not happen in an instant. Make sure you reward yourself as you reach each small milestone.

Above all, don’t give up! You don’t want to be making the same resolutions this time next year.

Increase your libido with six simple steps

Increase your libido with six simple steps

Sex can lose its lustre for many reasons, ranging from hormonal hassles to stress, poor diet, boredom, medication and everything in between. Get your motor running with these tips.

Eat smarter

What you eat plays a big role in your sexual health. Zinc, in particular, is necessary for the release of hormones. Good sources include nuts, seeds, eggs, wholegrains, beans and lean meat.

Coenzyme Q10 can significantly raise energy levels, especially in older men and women. Rich dietary sources include liver, kidney and wholegrains.

In pictures: Ten ways to look younger instantly

A lack of B vitamins causes lethargy and irritability — not good news for your sex drive. Niacin (vitamin B3) is especially important, as it helps women feel ready for sex by dilating blood vessels. The richest food sources are meat, fish, eggs and cereals.

Other foods that improve circulation and therefore help move blood towards the genitals include chillies, ginger and curry.

Manage stress

Being overscheduled can significantly dampen your sex drive, due to the damaging effects of the stress hormone cortisol, which blocks sex-hormone receptors and makes you tired.

Stress also throws oxytocin — the “love hormone” that promotes bonding and nurturing feelings — way out of whack. It’s crucial for your libido and your general health that you take time to relax, meditate and exercise.

Get herbal help

For some women with low libidos, depression may be the culprit; for others, herbs that balance hormones may help.

Ayurvedic practitioners prescribe the herb tribulus to increase energy and heighten sexual awareness. Research suggests that it also relieves menopausal symptoms.

Hormonal imbalances may be treated with chasteberry or damiana, which support testosterone levels, often too low in women with reduced sex drive, and ginkgo may improve peripheral circulation to the sex organs.

The Peruvian native maca root is said to nourish the endocrine glands, which are responsible for making sex hormones, while the Ayurvedic herb ashwagandha and the Chinese herbs ginseng and cordyceps act as adaptogens, helping to build up stamina.

Check your meds

Some drugs, including the contraceptive pill and some antidepressants, can cause a downturn in sex drive.

Women taking the pill may also have low levels of vitamin B6, and this further reduces sex drive because it is needed in the formation of dopamine and serotonin, brain chemicals involved in pleasure, sensation and mood.

Ask your doctor about possible side effects of drugs, and consider taking vitamin B6.

Try a (sex) toy story

Couples who laugh together are more satisfied with their relationship, sexual and otherwise. Experimenting with a sex toy can also lend a sense of humour and adventure.

Embrace your inner goddess

Convince your beloved to attend a weekend Tantra workshop, the ancient Indian practice of sacred sexuality and spirituality (think of those sensuous statues of intertwined Hindu gods and goddess), and learn how time-tested breathing practices, sexual positions and emotional healing techniques can help you reclaim your sex life.

Want to look sexier? Wear red

Want to look sexier? Wear red

It’s not just “the lady in red” who attracts romantic attention; apparently lads in red are also more likely to dazzle the opposite sex.

According to a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, photographs of men wearing red shirts were rated by women as significantly more attractive, sexier, higher in status and more likely to be financially well-off than photos of men wearing any other colour.

In pictures: The Bollywood diet

The researchers speculate that there are several reasons for this effect: biology (the colour is associated with dominance among primates), power (it’s also associated with royalty) and social standing (think: the red carpet).

Interestingly, the effect did not extend to other traits — for example, it did not make the men seem any more likeable or kind.

Om baby! How yoga can improve sex

Om baby! How yoga can improve sex

If stress reduction and improved flexibility isn’t enough to make you take up yoga here’s another reason: it could send your libido through the roof.

According to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, regular yoga practise also enhances your sex life.

The study, of 40 women aged 22 to 55, found that performing particular asanas (poses) for a 12-week period resulted in measurable improvements in desire, arousal, orgasm and sexual satisfaction.

In pictures: The Bollywood diet

The poses — trikonasana (triangle pose), bhujangasana (the snake) and ardha matsyendra mudra (half spinal twist) — are all thought to help by strengthening pelvic muscle tone and improving blood flow to the genitals as well as boosting self-confidence and increasing relaxation.

Kate digs a hole… in a mini-dress and heels

Kate Middleton is famous for her can-do attitude, but even she must have felt a little ridiculous digging a hole in a short designer dress and high heels yesterday.

The Duchess of Cambridge was photographed shovelling dirt onto shrubs in Yellowknife, Canada, wearing one of the most unsuitable gardening outfits of all time – a short cream linen Malene Birger dress, which sells for $410, and sky-high nude heels.

Sara revealed the nuptial news on her Twitter page at 3.10am Australian time this morning.

“Glenn and I remarried in a religious ceremony for close family and friends,” she wrote. “We are very happy. Thank you to the media for leaving us alone!”

Sara’s followers were quick to ask for pictures from the event, but she refused, tweeting: “No exclusives and no pictures from us, sorry!”

Glenn also commented on the wedding, expressing his joy on his Twitter page.

“Sara and I just got married again on July 4,” he wrote. “It was a beautiful ceremony in Sicily. Thank you to the media for respecting our privacy.”

While Glenn and Sara were keen to keep details of the ceremony secret, New Idea revealed all in their latest issue.

The couple wed in the historic Basilica Collegiate of San Sebastiano. Sara wore an asymmetrical off-white satin gown by Sydney bridal designer Johanna Johnson, accessorised with a 1920s-style headdress. Glenn wore a simple black suit.

After the wedding, Glenn and Sara got into a blue Porsche to drive to their reception at the Faro Sant Anna sports club in nearby Capomulini.
