Bindi Irwin turns 13: I’m the luckiest girl in the world!

Bindi Irwin turns 13: I'm the luckiest girl in the world!

Grease is the word as Bindi rocks into her teens in the fab 50s style of her favourite movie. She talks about growing up and what makes her truly happy.

Watching Bindi Irwin dance, her skirt swishing to the beat of Greased Lightning pumping from the stereo, it’s hard to believe this is TV’s little khaki-clad eco warrior. All dressed up in 50s gear as she prepares to celebrate her 13th birthday, Steve’s little girl is pretty, petite and unfailingly polite.

Despite Bindi’s unconventional upbringing, which has included feeding crocodiles, hosting her own TV shows and travelling the world, she’s just like any other young teenager. Her favourite colour is pink and she loves talking to her friends, shopping, and listening to music. “I love The Veronicas and Jessica Mauboy,” she says. “I go out with friends to the shops at the weekend. I don’t have my ears pierced, but I love jewellery like rings and bracelets.”

As she laughs and chats with her little brother Robert, 7, it’s easy to forget Bindi is one of the most famous youngsters in the world, but the cutesy bunches and “jungle girl” look she’s known for across the globe are gone today and it’s obvious she is fast growing into a young woman. “It’s amazing watching Bindi change,” says mum Terri proudly.

“The little girl-to-young lady thing happens so quickly.” Terri’s eyes well with tears. “We hit these milestones and I think, ‘Gee, I wish Steve was here for it’,” she says of her wildlife warrior husband who died in a tragic accident in 2006. “And then I think he kind of is. We’re being watched over. That’s special too.”

See more of our exclusive shoot with Bindi and read more in our interview with Terri in this week’s Woman’s Day, on sale July 11, 2011.

Aussie friend tells: Charlene’s tears were tears of joy

Aussie friend tells: Charlene's tears were tears of joy

The world may think Charlene was Prince Albert’s ‘runaway’ bride but one of her closest friends, Aussie swim star Sophie Edington, insists her tears were those of joy.

There were few signs of last-minute nerves when Adelaide swimmer Sophie Edington arrived in Monaco to spend a few days “relaxing and hanging out” with Charlene Wittstock before the wedding. “We had such a good time,” Sophie says. “Charlene was very informal, just wearing shorts, T-shirts and thongs most of the time. In Monaco, she has been able to get around without too much fanfare. Most people don’t stop and stare or anything.”

Commonwealth Games backstroke gold medallist Sophie, 26, met fellow swimmer Charlene at a swim meet four years ago and has been a close friend ever since. “I was alone at a swimming contest in South Africa and Charlene took me under her wing and showed me around,” she says. “That’s when we really became good friends. Charlene is a really down-to-earth, lovely person.”

Sophie and her partner, Melbourne Rebels rugby union player Adam Byrnes, 29, report the wedding was a “happy, wonderful event” and that they were unaware of any problems. “We were dancing with them until dawn, and they’re very happy,” Sophie says. “They’re really looking forward to having children and sharing their life together.” She also spent time with Charlene at the palace in the lead-up to the wedding, and the two enjoyed massages and facials at a local spa.

“It was fantastic,” says Sophie, who gave the bride and groom a crocodile clutch bag, a pen, cufflinks and an autographed Melbourne Rebels jersey. “We went to dinner with a whole group – her mum and dad and some friends. They’re flying to South Africa this week to have a private service with Charlene’s family and friends back home. “Then Albert’s taking her on a month-long honeymoon. She doesn’t know where, though. It’s a surprise, but of course it will be somewhere fabulous!” Sophie reveals the wedding was a “fairytale come true” for her friend, while Adam says it was extraordinary from the moment they arrived for the three-day celebration.

Wills and Kate’s honeymoon tour: They are so in love

Wills and Kate's honeymoon tour: They are so in love

Veteran royal reporter Judy Wade joins the newlyweds as they take Canada by storm on their first official overseas tour.

Not since the peak of Diana-mania has the world seen anything quite like it. As Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, arrived in Ottawa to participate in Canada Day festivities, the city streets came to a standstill, with almost half a million people lining the route, trying to catch a glimpse of the royal newlyweds in their horse-drawn carriage.

On only the second day of their whirlwind 11-day North American trip, it was already apparent the couple’s first official overseas tour was a wild success, with the future of the British monarchy secure in the hearts of the biggest Commonwealth territory. William and Kate’s playful, relaxed manner, down-to-earth chitchat and willingness to give everything a go clearly struck a chord with the Canadians. As did the duchess’s dazzling fashion choices – a mixture of sleek, sophisticated British and local designs, often in Canada’s national colours with maple-leaf accents.

From a hospital visit in Montreal to a street hockey game in remote Yellowknife, 500km from the Arctic Circle, thousands turned up everywhere the pair went. Yet, despite the vast, cheering crowds, William and Kate, both 29, had eyes only for each other. The tour was like a second honeymoon, with the newlyweds stealing intimate glances and giving cheeky grins throughout their royal duties. These constant displays of affection have seen Wills and Kate dubbed “the world’s sweethearts”, with the couple even sharing a cuddle in the rain after their dragon boat race on Prince Edward Island.

The weather in Canada was mostly warm, but the chemistry between the two was sizzling. It was all anyone who met them could talk about – even a homeless punk in Quebec described them as having “this magic bubble around them”. They acted as if they had some wonderful secret, and it would be no surprise if they were trying for a baby. Both William and his wife have confessed they can’t wait to become parents and, while in Quebec, Kate once again spoke of her desire to be a mum.

Mel B tells: I’ll have an Aussie baby!

Mel B tells: I'll have an Aussie baby!

Melanie Brown and her daughter Angel.

The pop star plans to spice up The X Factor, and can’t wait to bring her family to the country she loves.

As Melanie Brown leans over her adorable daughter Angel to dab some “fairy princess” shadow over her eyes, the little girl throws her arms around her mum’s swollen belly and asks, teasingly, “What’s that?” “You know the answer to that one,” grins the former Scary Spice, now known as Mel B. “It’s a baby.” “When’s it coming out?” asks the cheeky four-year-old. “That’s what I want to know!” her mother laughs. “I feel like I’m about to burst!”

Mel – who usually lives in Los Angeles, but is in Australia preparing for her role as a judge on TV talent quest The X Factor – is eight months pregnant and has clearly reached that uncomfortable stage. As she is primped and preened for Woman’s Day’s exclusive photo shoot, Mel, 36, clutches her baby bump and groans, “Who was it who said pregnancy was exciting? It is at the start, with the glowing skin and the joy of bringing new life into the world, but now I just want this baby out of me! “This is my third pregnancy,” she quickly adds, “so I’m allowed to moan!”

Despite her jokey protestations, Mel is clearly revelling in motherhood. Chuckling in her distinctive, throaty, northern England accent, she says this pregnancy is very different from the previous ones, “Because I’m actually with the dad!” The father of her unborn child is her second husband, movie producer Stephen Belafonte, whom she married in Las Vegas in 2007 and describes as “my best friend and the love of my life”.

Mel’s elder daughter, Phoenix, 12, was born shortly before she divorced her first husband, former back-up dancer Jimmy Gulzar, and Angel was conceived during a brief relationship with Hollywood funnyman Eddie Murphy, who famously demanded a DNA test before accepting paternity. “This time,” Mel smiles, “it’s been lovely to have a pregnancy with a loving, caring partner and not all alone as a single parent moaning to myself. You know, it’s nice to have someone who’s really supportive.”

*MasterChef* Mat: The day my mum disappeared

MasterChef Mat: The day my mum disappeared

Mat Beyer explains how a painful family secret was the real reason for keeping his mobile phone in the MasterChef  house, resulting in his early exit.

As contestant Mat Beyer left the MasterChef  house in disgrace, he had no regrets about the smartphone scandal that engulfed him and made him “infamous” – because Mat knew the real and deeply private reason he needed a direct line to the outside world. On Friday, July 9, 2004, when he was 16, his mother Julie, 47, went missing from her home in Albury, NSW, and was never seen again.

“She was a normal, everyday mum,” recalls Mat, who was living in Melbourne with his father when his mother vanished. Although Mat’s parents separated when he was nine, the family remained close and in constant contact. “I spoke to her every day. We were so close. I was a mummy’s boy, totally. I loved my mum – I still love her.”

Mat remembers his mother as a loving woman who was content in her life, and who made fabulous burritos and baked goods after shifts working as a dental nurse or, in later years, in the office of a law firm. In 2004, Julie was working in NSW as a legal secretary but had resigned as she was excitedly planning a move to Mackay in Queensland, where she had rented a new home and had begun processing a new lease. She had put some belongings in storage in preparation for the move and the beginning of a brand new start. But before she set out for Queensland, she vanished while running an errand in her car to Lavington, NSW.

“The last conversation we had was about the new house she had found and how excited she was to move,” Mat says. “Out of nowhere, she just disappeared.” Mat and his father were forced to call the police when Julie failed to answer her phone for two days in a row, unusual behaviour for the normally chatty redhead. “She just stopped answering our calls, and eventually her phone switched itself off,” Mat says. “Her bank account was never touched again. Her car [a white Daewoo station wagon] was never found. She never renewed her licence.”

Vancouver kissing couple: We are moving to Australia

Vancouver kissing couple are moving to Australia

He was dubbed the ‘Riot Romeo’. Now, romantic hero Scott Jones is bringing his Canadian sweetheart home to Australia.

Not since the ’50s film From Here To Eternity or Rodin’s iconic marble statue The Kiss has a humble pash so captured the world’s imagination. When Perth’s Scott Jones and his girlfriend, Alexandra Thomas, locked lips in the middle of a riot in Canada, they became a YouTube sensation and were dubbed a modern day Romeo and Juliet.

In a world-exclusive, Scott, 29, and Vancouver native Alex, 24, take Woman’s Day back to where that celebrated kiss took place, tell the real story behind the images, and reveal their plans to continue their love story in Australia. “We’d gone to a friend’s apartment to watch the ice hockey championship and had our faces painted in the Vancouver Canucks colours, blue and green,” says Scott, a bartender and aspiring comedian. “When the game was over and our team had lost, I took Alex into town to get a few drinks and drown our sorrows.

“We hadn’t been out long when all of a sudden things started getting out of control [fans began rioting, beating up bystanders and torching cars]. The streets were being shut down by police on horses. Out of nowhere, there were deafening explosions and tear gas. “We were running to get away from it, but the police stood at the end of the street and charged at us – it was insane! I was holding Alex’s hand but she tripped and fell. The police were right behind her so I went back to help her. I just wanted to protect her from it all.”

Alex picks up the story. “They were bashing us down with their shields and I was shouting, ‘Please stop!’ It was a nightmare and I don’t know what I would have done if Scott wasn’t there. I was really freaking out. “I was crying, and when they finally stopped hitting us and pushing us down, Scott had his arms around me and was just trying to calm me down. “That was when he kissed me. It made me feel really safe and I knew that he loved me. I’d never felt in that much danger before, but I wasn’t surprised that he came to my rescue – he is always really caring and considerate.”
