Farmer John’s heartbreak: I lost the love of my life

Farmer John's heartbreak: I lost the love of my life

At 58, farmer John is ready to find love again. After spending the past 14 years as a widower, the Farmer Wants a Wife contestant has opened his heart in the hopes of finding a new partner to share his life with.

“The nights start to get very lonely,” John says. “I am in the position where I could afford to travel a little and I would love a partner to do that with.” But finding the woman of his dreams is proving a tough task. No one can live up to the high standards set by John’s wife of 25 years, Janice, who passed away from cancer in 1997.

“If I tried comparing somebody to Janice, I’d probably have nobody,” John tells Woman’s Day. “Jan was faultless.”

Their great love story began at the tender age of 16, when John and his mates decided to crash a very special event. “It was her debutante ball and all us young fellas had just come back from a rodeo and I guess we sort of walked in there a bit uninvited and I just saw this beautiful girl and I said, ‘I am going to try get on to this girl’,” John remembers. “I don’t think her deb partner was very happy, but I kind of cut in after a while and that was it.”

The happy couple married in 1972 and had two sons, Richard, 35 and Brett, 32. “We never had an argument, she was just so easy to get along with,” John says. “I had a once in a lifetime lovely lady in Jan.”

John says he was devastated when Janice was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. “The doctors couldn’t tell me how bad it was until they operated and when they did, the doctor had to come out and give me the news and he said it has gone too far and there is definitely nothing that can be done….he said she may have six months, but she never even had that long.”

Despite Janice’s grim diagnosis, she remained positive and upbeat, determined to beat the cancer. “She was so positive that she was going to beat it,” John says. “She was so strong, much stronger than all of us with it. We would be in tears and she would never get into tears and she said, ‘I have to be strong for you and the boys’.”

Janice’s last wish was for her devoted husband to find love again and to live a happy and fulfilled life. “She said to me, ‘Don’t be alone the rest of your life. You’ll find somebody to be happy with and these boys will have grandkids one day and they’ll all want to see you happy with somebody.”

In 1997, just four months after she was diagnosed, Janice lost her battle with cancer. “It was very sad – it is something you have to learn to live with,” John says. “But I have the two boys and I see her in the two boys. Brett is wild like me, and Richard is very quiet like his mum.”

But despite his painful past, John’s journey on the Channel 9 hit show has given him a new lease on life and he is positive the woman of his dreams is out there somewhere. “I will eventually find the right one,” he says with a smile. “Something good will come out of this.”

Six diet mistakes even women in the know make

Six diet mistakes even women in the know make

Dieting is a tricky business. Even if you exercise regularly, eat salad for lunch and resist the temptation to scoff chocolate biscuits every afternoon, there are pitfalls that can leave even the most experienced calorie-counter struggling to slim down.

Here is our list of diet mistakes even the most savvy women often make.

1. You have an alcohol free night and drink flavoured mineral water all night instead

Replacing alcohol with soft drinks may not save you any kilojoules. In fact you’ll probably be having more. A standard 120ml glass of wine provides 330 kilojoules, but a glass of soft drink supplies around 430 kilojoules. Better to enjoy a glass of wine then move on to plain, soda or mineral water or a even a diet soft drink.

2. You choose a fruit muffin for a healthy snack

Although an apple and cinnamon or banana muffin sounds very healthy, it can actually be very high in fat, with a whopping 13 grams of fat in a medium sized muffin. You could eat three apples and still not match the 1180 kilojoules from one average muffin.

3. You skip breakfast after an evening of indulgence

Although you think you can save on kilojoules by skipping breakfast after over indulging at a night on the town, breakfast is the key to kick-starting your metabolism and help to burn off the excess.

4. You’re a slave to salads

A salad may sound like the healthiest option on the menu, but that’s not necessarily the case especially if it’s drowning in dressing and full of high fat ingredients. Take a Caesar salad for example — croutons, parmesan cheese, pancetta, anchovies and a creamy dressing — adds up to 16 grams of fat. That’s about half your daily requirement when you’re trying to lose weight!

5. You’ve become vegetarian

It may sound healthier, but following a vegetarian diet can put you at risk of nutritional deficiencies, unless very well balanced. Vegetarian diets can also be high in saturated fat especially if you’re a cheese lover. A lean steak, rich in protein, iron and zinc, is certainly nutritious and is not the enemy for your waistline. In fact it is very filling and may prevent you from overeating something else.

6. You give up the burger and fries and go for the Singapore noodles.

While a box of Singapore noodles has around 24g fat, 10g less than a burger and fries, the kilojoule value is a whopping 4385. That’s over 1000 calories and nearly 400 more than the burger and fries. But before you throw away the chopsticks, I have a better solution. Instead of eating the entire box of noodles which is a huge serving of 800g, share it with two of your friends!

Your say: Do you have any other diet mistakes you’ve discovered the hard way?

Kate following in Diana’s footsteps

Kate following in Diana's footsteps

Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge is following in the footsteps of Diana the Princess of Wales by secretly visiting the homeless and the sick.

She has made a series of secret visits to learn about several charities, as she makes a decision as to which she will formally support as a royal patron according to St James’s Palace.

The charities she visits have been asked not to disclose that Kate has been to see them until an announcement is made.

At this stage it is thought she will focus on the homeless, vulnerable young people, veterans’ issues and conservation. However, she is using the next few months to learn more about a variety of good causes before she decides in the New Year.

A palace source said that Kate had the Duke of Cambridge’s ‘full support’ but was researching the charities independently.

“The Duchess is using the next few months to get to know a number of charitable and other causes better, so she can make well-informed decisions about her future role,” a St James’s Palace spokesman said.

“The Duchess plans to meet a wide range of people and make private visits.

“We are not giving a running commentary of the causes the Duchess is looking at. Her interests remain broad at the moment.”

At this stage the couple wants to avoid overshadowing Queen Elizabeth II in the run-up to 2012, the 85-year-old monarch’s diamond jubilee year.

Guy and Jules: We’re having a baby!

Guy and Jules: We're having a baby!

The X Factor judge and his wife are bubbling over with joy at the news they’re expecting their first child.

Life has never been sweeter for Aussie chart-topper Guy Sebastian and his wife of three years, Julie Egan. An overjoyed Guy has revealed the real reason he hasn’t been able to stop smiling on the judging panel of reality show The X Factor: Jules, as Guy affectionately calls his soul mate, is 13 weeks pregnant with their first child.

Unable to contain his excitement, Guy took to Twitter last week to confirm the news.“2day we r officially out of our first trimester so it excites me 2 announce that Jules & I r expecting our first child,” the original Australian Idol winner wrote. “Cant w8 2 b parents! “Thanks to all friends, family, fans, etc for all your kind words. We love you.” But it was actually Guy’s fellow judge on The X Factor, Ronan Keating, who first confirmed the industry’s worst-kept secret. “Guy told me a while ago. I didn’t realise the news was out,” Ronan let slip on The Kyle And Jackie O Show last Monday. “That’s great. I’m really excited for them, they’re a lovely couple.”

Guy, 29, has enjoyed hit after hit here and overseas since his debut single Angels Brought Me Here shattered chart records. But there’s no doubt fatherhood is the role he’s been waiting for. Well known as a nice guy in the recording industry, Guy – who famously abstained from sex until marriage due to his strong Christian faith – has never lost sight of what matters most in life.

Sure, he won the hearts of a nation with his show-stopping performances on Idol in 2003. However, for the Malaysian-born, tattooed R&B crooner – who met his beloved Jules as a teenager in a church group in Adelaide – family, friends and, above all, his softly spoken wife, have always come first.

Tammin Sursok: My romantic Italian wedding!

Tammin Sursok: My romantic Italian wedding!

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when the Aussie actress married her director beau in an intimate ceremony in Florence.

When it comes to weddings, Tammin Sursok could be forgiven for expecting a last-minute objection, the reappearance of a long-lost relative, or a misbehaving bridesmaid to be caught in a compromising position. After all, the Australian actress saw many nuptials take a melodramatic turn in her breakthrough role as Colleen Carlton on daytime soapie The Young And The Restless.

When the time came to take her real-life vows, however, the day turned out to be a picture-perfect love story. “It was the most magical, breathtaking, incredible and wonderful day of my life,” Tammin, 28, beams. “People always told me that at your wedding, a lot of the time you don’t really get to speak to people and enjoy yourself. But I got to spend magical moments with every person there. I would not have done it any other way. For me, it was perfect.”

Set over three days, Tammin’s impeccably planned nuptials began with a series of dinners, cocktail parties and elegant breakfasts in the romantic Italian city of Florence. It culminated in an unforgettable ceremony, in a villa overlooking the city’s famous Duomo (cathedral) as the sun set. “I went to Italy when I was 13 years old and just fell in love with the place,” says Tammin, who now stars in US series Pretty Little Liars and has numerous film projects due in 2012. “It’s the most romantic place in the world.”

Tammin and her husband, writer and director Sean McEwen, 36, had holidayed in Italy the year before – and, like so much else in the couple’s life, something just felt right. “We fell in love with each other all over again,” she says. “We’d been together almost five years – and we went to this hotel, a villa in Florence, and said, ‘When we get married, this is where we want to do it. It’s a little piece of paradise.’ It’s the most magical place.” Going with their instincts paid off, as it did when the pair first chanced going on a date five years ago… to a fast-food joint in small-town Missouri in the US.

Kim Kardashian is the picture of bridal bliss at her numerous public photo opportunites, but behind closed doors, she and her husband Kris Humphries have reportedly been fighting ever since their multimillion-dollar, made-for-TV wedding.

While the reality TV superstar is nagging the basketballer to give her the baby she’s always dreamed off, Kris is complaining he’s fed up with faking everything for the cameras. “Their whole life is staged,” reveals a source close to Kris. “He didn’t realise that until the wedding and has had a rude awakening. He’s sick of how their lives are planned out like a scripted TV show.”

Despite pressuring Kris, 26, to go through with the wedding, the Kardashian clan had doubts about the sportsman from the start.

Palace outrage: Zara’s hubby busted with a blonde

Palace outrage: Zara's hubby busted with a blonde

Just weeks after his magical royal wedding to Zara Phillips, English rugby star Mike Tindall is in the doghouse.

As she left Edinburgh’s Canongate Kirk on her new husband’s arm, royal bride Zara Phillips couldn’t hide her joy. She’d just married the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with, in a dream ceremony almost completely free of pomp and pageantry. It truly was the happiest day of her life. But just six weeks later, the Queen’s eldest (and reportedly favourite) grandchild has been left embarrassed by that very same man, England rugby captain Mike Tindall, following claims reported in Britain’s The Sun newspaper that he was spotted getting a bit too close to a blonde on a boozy night out in New Zealand.

The sports star had joined his team-mates to celebrate their narrow victory over Argentina in their first game of the Rugby World Cup at popular Queenstown night spot Altitude, where they watched dwarfs racing. After downing a string of shots, players were photographed tackling each other, grappling with the little people and posing with star-struck female fans. But it was 32-year-old Mike’s hands-on approach with one particular blonde that attracted the most attention.

“They were flirting with each other and getting very touchy-feely,” an onlooker claimed in The Sun. “They went into the doorway, where the girl gestured Mike towards her chest. “She pulled his head towards her breasts and she rubbed the back of his head as she did so. The girl was absolutely stunning and all over him. He clearly thought it was a case of ‘What happens on tour, stays on tour’. “But it’s not the behaviour you would expect of a man who is not only England captain but also now a member of the royal family,” the onlooker told The Sun.

The newlyweds had postponed their honeymoon due to their hectic sporting schedules, and champion equestrienne Zara, 30, was scheduled to join her husband in New Zealand only after competing in an event later this month. Now it’s thought she may jet out earlier to keep an eye on her wayward spouse. There’s no doubt, though, that the bride knew she was marrying a man who liked his alcohol when she promised to be “a loving, faithful and loyal wife” on July 30.

See the pictures and read more about Mike Tindall’s night out in this week’s Woman’s Day, on sale September 19, 2011.

Australians in denial about their weight and health

Australians in denial about their weight and health

Almost a third of overweight adults mistakenly think that their health is excellent or very good, according to a new study by the National Heart Foundation of Australia.

The heart health charity surveyed more than 12,500 people aged 30-65 and found that women were more likely to be in denial about the impact their weight has on their health than men.

“Our perception of what being healthy looks like seems to be expanding at the same rate as our waistlines,” Healthy Weight Director at the Heart Foundation Susan Anderson said.

“As being overweight becomes more common, it appears that some people no longer consider carrying extra kilos to be a threat to their health.

“In reality, being overweight or obese increases your risk of heart disease, the number one killer of Australian men and women, as well as diabetes, arthritis and some types of cancer.”

Overall, 32 percent of overweight women thought they were in excellent or very good health compared to 29 percent of overweight men. The gender gap increased to 8 percent in the 60-65 age group.

The Heart Foundation also found that a significant proportion of people still considered themselves to be in excellent health even when their doctor recommended making lifestyle changes.

“The way we view our health may be clouded by judging ourselves against others rather than against medical advice and the recommended guidelines,” Anderson said.

Almost 10 million Australian adults are now overweight or obese, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics finding that 25 percent are obese, 37 percent are overweight and 37 percent are a healthy weight.

For most people, being a healthy weight means having a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9, but waist circumference is also a good indicator. Women should aim for a waist measurement of less than 80cm and men for less than 94cm.

“A comprehensive approach is needed to help people make healthier choices. As well as continuing to challenge food companies to make their food healthier through our Tick Program, the Heart Foundation is encouraging federal and state government to make healthy food affordable and accessible; provide clearer labelling of unhealthy ingredients; and improve local neighbourhoods so that more families have access to parks and safe routes for kids to walk and ride to school.”

The survey also found that:

  • Almost a fifth of people who have been advised by their doctor to lose weight rate their health as very good or excellent.

  • One in six people who have been advised by their doctor to do more physical activity rate their health as very good or excellent.

  • More than one in six people who have been advised by their doctor to improve their diet rate their health as very good or excellent.
