Will these posters cost Jean Dujardin an Oscar?

Jean Dujardin has landed himself in hot water over some risque posters for his new film. Do you think it will cost him the best actor Oscar?
Jean Dujardin Les Infidels

Jean Dujardin’s performance in The Artist has made him an overnight superstar, and left him the favourite for the best actor Academy Award.

But some risqué promotional posters for the Frenchman’s new film Les Infideles (The Players) have landed him in hot water – and maybe even ruined his Oscars chances.

The posters – which have been banned by France’s advertising regulator for “degrading women” – feature Jean in various suggestive poses.

Do you think the images are scandalous enough to cost Jean the Oscar?

‘Sexually transmitted debt’ is a thing

New partner? Here's how to avoid contracting a STD.
distressed couple looking at paperwork

WHEN you get into a new relationship, there’s so much to look forward to and plenty of exciting things to discover about your new partner – but several maxed out credit cards and a high-interest personal loan aren’t one of them. You see, your own debts and financial situation aren’t just affecting you anymore, they can also place negative implications on your significant other.

Put it this way, if one person has a big credit card debt, it may affect a couple’s ability to get a home loan. Or if one party defaults on their credit card payments, the bank may come after a couple’s joint assets. People tend to not reveal their personal debts because they feel ashamed, but it is important for couples to have the ‘money talk’ sooner rather than later. Here’s how to be STD smart.

Sharing your intimate details

Starting a new relationship can be an exciting time, learning about the other person’s favourite colour, if they are a cat or dog person, what they like to eat and so on. But sometimes you need to ask more probing questions, like how many credit cards they have and how much they owe on each card. While you are at it, maybe check whether they have store cards, a car loan, personal loan or even a home loan. Be it good or bad, it’s important to know your partner’s intimate details.

Developing a strategy

Managing debt is important. Be sure to ask your partner how long they’ve had the debt and what steps they are taking to pay it off. For example, if they’ve had credit card debt for many years, they will need to make more than the minimum repayments to pay it off. The general rule of thumb is to pay off bad debt like credit cards first as they usually have the highest interest rates. With multiple credit card debt, it may be worth rolling this in to one low-interest card to save on interest. It may even be worth getting the scissors out to remove any further temptation.

Risky relationships

A new relationship can be likened to a new business partnership — you want it to succeed but there are risks that come with the territory. For that reason it’s a good idea to know your partner’s credit history. Find out if they’ve ever been declared bankrupt or placed on a rental tenancy blacklist. A credit reporting agency can provide you with a copy of your credit. But don’t despair if your new love comes with some unwanted financial baggage — you can always improve your credit history with a little help from a financial planner.

Being open and honest

Both partners should be upfront about any debts they may be bringing into a relationship. Don’t try to hide your money problems due to pride or embarrassment. Try taking a direct approach with a comment like: “I’m really serious about you, so let’s talk turkey. How are you going financially?” While debt will never be first thing on a couple’s mind when embarking on a new relationship, it is far too important an issue to push aside.

Weight loss heroes: Gastric banding saved my teen’s life

Elle Macpherson's amazing body at 47

Terrified for her obese 14-year-old daughter’s health, Juliet Hill took drastic action.

Pretty British teen Katie Hill still complains today that when she takes off her clothes, she looks like an 80-year-old. After losing more than half her body weight in less than a year, Katie’s been left with excess skin that she’s saving up to have removed. But for her mum, Juliet Hill, it’s a small price to pay for her controversial decision to allow Katie to undergo a gastric banding procedure at just 14.

At 13, Katie weighed 114kg and was a size 28. Juliet insists that if she hadn’t given her consent, Katie – now 18, a healthy size 10 and just over 50kg – wouldn’t have lived to see 40. “She was the youngest person in the UK to have the operation and, despite the backlash, looking at Katie now, it was the best decision I ever made,” says Juliet. “Katie’s happier and healthier than I could have ever hoped.”

Juliet blamed herself for Katie’s out-of-control weight. Even as a baby, she and husband Gary fed their daughter 10 bottles a day to satisfy her insatiable appetite. “Again and again we took her to the doctor, but there was nothing they could do,” she says. “I suspected Kate was sneaking food, but I couldn’t watch her every minute of the day.”

Encouraged by the results of her own gastric banding operation in 2006, Juliet consulted the same surgeon. He agreed to do it, providing Juliet gave her consent – but she was hesitant at first, given the risks involved. “Katie was over the moon, but we were apprehensive,” says Juliet. “It was dangerous – there’s a risk of infection or the band slipping – but she was determined to have it done.” Once she’d had the procedure, Katie was sore at first, but amazed everyone with how quickly she adapted.

Sonia Kruger: The truth about my vegas wedding

Sonia Kruger: The truth about my vegas wedding

The sunny TV host reflects on her 20 years in the spotlight, and comes clean on those marriage rumours.

Sonia Kruger laughs when the conversation turns to marriage. The rumour mill went into overdrive at Christmas when word leaked out that she was headed to Las Vegas with the love of her life – Today Tonight executive producer Craig McPherson – to tie the knot in the city of sin.

Photographers staked out the Elvis Wedding Chapel and reporters were winging their way to Vegas to witness Sonia’s “secret” wedding – the only problem was, the “bride and groom” knew nothing about it. But speculation about their relationship is nothing new. The pressure has been on ever since Sonia’s best mate, newsreader Chris Bath, wed sports reporter Jim Wilson and friends started asking, “When will you tie the knot with Craig?”

“I just don’t see marriage as necessary to having a great relationship,” explains Sonia, 46, who has been married twice. “It’s just not that important to me. That said, we are very much in love and plan to spend the rest of our lives together.” Equally, Sonia doesn’t rule out motherhood, although she realises her biological clock will not allow her to keep her hopes alive forever. “It was just the way my life panned out; it’s more circumstance than anything else.” Sonia says she can’t rule out children, hinting that she has explored options.

“There are ways and ways – there are a lot more options open to women now than there ever were before,” she says. “There are so many choices for women today, and I think most women can see pros and cons with all those decisions. It makes us interesting that everyone is different and makes different choices. Imagine if we were all the same!”

Sara Leonardi-McGrath: Our family joy

Sara Leonardi-McGrath: Our family joy

Busier than ever and in the best shape of her life, Sara has settled into her groove as wife and stepmum to two well-adjusted children.

Sara Leonardi-McGrath is made of tough stuff. She’s had to be. Since falling in love with former cricketer Glenn McGrath and becoming stepmother to his two children, whose mother Jane died from breast cancer in 2008, she’s faced cruel taunts and intense media scrutiny – on top of being uprooted from her career, friends and family to relocate to the other side of the world.

“It certainly wasn’t easy at first,” says Sara, 30, of the gold-digger accusations and general tut-tutting that their union came too soon after Jane’s death. “Neither Glenn nor I ever anticipated the reaction we received.”Anyone who thought Sara would crumble under the intense pressure obviously has never met the woman.

She speaks three languages, has a business degree and was studying interior design in Cape Town when she met Glenn. Smart, focused, worldly, fit and madly in love with her new husband and his children, Sara is exactly where she wants to be – heart, mind, spirit and body.

Talking to Woman’s Day, it’s clear she is taking her stepmother role seriously. Having been brought up as an only child by two parents she adores, Sara is determined to give James, 10, and Holly, 12, a similar loving start to life. However, she does not see herself replacing Jane. To her, that thought is almost obscene – which is why she was so hurt by a magazine article last year where she was misquoted as saying she is the only mother James and Holly have. “I didn’t say that and I would never say that,” Sara stresses.

Mr and Mrs Pitt: The wedding of the century!

Brad Pitt talks wedding plans

A typically unconventional big day is finally on the cards for this eternally marriage-shy couple.

The intimate kisses he stole from her at last week’s Screen Actors Guild Awards said it all. Not usually one for public displays of affection, Brad Pitt couldn’t keep his eyes, or hands, off his leading lady, Angelina Jolie. he pair look more loved-up than ever – and the reason is obvious, with the actor publicly giving the strongest indication yet he’ll make the mother of their six children his lawfully wedded wife.

“We’d actually like to,” the Moneyball star confessed earlier this month, when the Hollywood Reporter asked if he and Ange will ever exchange vows, “and it seems to mean more and more to our kids.” We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can,” the actor continued. “But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me too, to make that kind of commitment.”

Indeed, Brad confirmed to CBS News last week that he’s been receiving “a lot of pressure” from his spirited tribe to marry their mother, admitting he’d told his kids, “We will someday. We will. That’s a great idea. Get Mommy a ring? Okay, I will.”

Insiders tell Woman’s Day the children have ganged up on Brad and are bullying him into marrying their mother, wearing coloured string “rings” on their wedding fingers and marching around the house with homemade signs saying, “Mom says yes,” and, “Forever together”. And, as Brad’s words suggest, it seems the kids’ super-cute antics have had the desired effect, with their parents looking set to pledge their love in a formal ceremony.

Kate Middleton’s lonely Valentine’s Day

Kate Middleton's lonely Valentine's Day

The Duchess of Cambridge

Kate Middleton is facing a lonely Valentine’s Day 12,000km away from Prince William.

The Duke of Cambridge flew to the Falklands on Wednesday for a six-week deployment with his RAF Search and Rescue Unit.

Kate is planning to keep busy while her new husband is away, undertaking her first solo public engagements since she joined the royal family last April.

Kate will visit London’s National Portrait Gallery on Wednesday, February 8 to view the Lucien Freud exhibition.

The Duchess of Cambridge studied history of art at St Andrew’s University — where she met William — and became patron of the portrait gallery last month.

She will then travel to Liverpool on Valentine’s Day, February 14, for an ‘away day’.

Kate is expected to visit Liverpool’s alcohol-free bar The Brink during her visit. The bar is run by Action on Addiction, the charity the duchess became a patron of last month.

She will also tour Ronald McDonald House at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Meanwhile, William will be completing his first overseas deployment in the troubled Falklands region.

The second-in-line to the throne’s arrival earlier this week sparked protests in Argentina, which has long-contested Britain’s claim to the islands.

Hundreds of masked protestors gathered in front of HSBC bank in Buenos Aires, brandishing clubs and hurling paint bombs.

Kate, who reportedly sees herself as “very much the military wife”, is said to be extremely supportive of William’s career.

The night I met Princess Mary

The night I met Princess Mary

Crown Princess Mary with the ECCO Walk In Style award winner Hadassah De Boer.

On Tuesday night I was lucky enough to see our very own Princess Mary in the flesh.

I was invited to the fifth annual ECCO Walk In Style awards in Copenhagen, Denmark, held at the city’s beautiful and historic City Hall.

At 7.35pm the 300-strong crowd was upstanding for the Crown Princess’ extremely punctual arrival.

In pictures: Princess Mary’s twins turn one

I had a great view of her as she was led through the room, smiling broadly.

Mary looked radiant in a very chic white pant suit by Danish designer Marlene Birger, Prada pumps and a Georg Jensen moonlight grapes ring.

It was such a thrill to see our Aussie royal up close and personal, and very refreshing to see her no-fuss attitude — she happily mingled with other guests and posed for lots of photos.

Watching Mary in action made me realise that we should be very proud of her as Australians.

The many Danes I have spoken to while I have been here have had nothing but praise for Mary and what she has done for the Scandinavian fashion industry since they crowned her their princess.

Mary attended the Walk In Style awards to honour six amazing women from across Europe.

The women — a former Russian figure skater, a Danish Singer, a Polish film agent, a Swedish fashion designer, Norwegian singer and actress and a Dutch journalist — were being recognised for their amazing charity work, as well as their successes in their chosen careers.

The winner was Danish journalist Hadassah De Boer, who works with charity Stichting Vluchteling, which provides aid to refugees in Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe whose lives have been devastated by war and violence.

Princess Mary presented Hadassah with her award, eloquently praising her commitment to journalism and charity work before leaving shortly after 10pm.

It was a wonderful evening and a great initiative ECCO has started — and maybe one day we might have our very own Australian nominee.

Mattie Cronan is The Weekly’s fashion editor. She is in Denmark for Copenhagen Fashion Week as a guest of ECCO.
